I find this generational gap around something like table manners, of all things, to be ginormously petty but also interesting to see that rift between older and younger people. My parents, for example, they were pretty old school about this sort of stuff; Only eat when everyone has their food, you must hold the fork in a specific way in your left hand and the knife in the other hand regardless if you may be left handed or not, you need to place them down while dressing the table in specific ways, yadda yadda etc. etc. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was brought up a little more loosely when it came to that, to a dogma that essentially was "just don't be gross by throwing or vomiting across everyone on the table and you'll be fine", and when we've had meals at restaurants together we had our meals essentially the same way as one another. I personally do not care a iota if someone starts to eat before I did, I don't want to make anyone stare at their plate at a restaurant watching their food get cold because I haven't gotten mine yet. If anything, I prefer it because seeing them enjoy theirs would only hype me up more for mine, I truly see no point in waiting.

tipping as well. When I was a kid, tipping was (supposed to be) as a reward for excellent service, but as I grew up it became good manners to tip because the minimum wage earner relies on it and they can't control 90% of the things that we tend to think of as "good service" in the first place (food quality/temperature/timing, having enough time to share between the tables they're assigned, etc). Especially once we got delivery as a norm and tipping delivery drivers was introduced

I think he's misunderstanding the point of manners in this situation. The point of waiting to eat is to show that your personal hunger is less important than everyone getting to start their meal at the same time. You are chosing the groups needs/enjoyment over your own. It is a way to show that you are more polite than just fulfilling your personal needs. As with all manners its a "signal" of politeness and can be dismissed by the other people, as NL said if someone says you don't have to wait, you don't have to. A similar example would be walking home in a group and reaching a crosswalk first (maybe twenty seconds before everyone else). The crosswalk light turns to "Walk" and you can either wait for your entire group to join you and walk together across or you can rush across and leave everyone behind potentially disrupting the group. You chose your personal need to get home/to your car over the group's cohesiveness. It's a minor thing but in my mind without any other stated intention it shows you are willing to put your needs first and don't think about other people. Which like all manners, the point is to show others you care and are willing to put them before you.
@miskolinaccc Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly, I don't know why people are reacting as there is absolutely no reason to perceive it as a sign of putting yourself before others. Of course, if you say anything, you can start eating, it's absolutely insane to insist on someone waiting after they would acknowledge it, but just chomping on your food instantly seems equally tone deaf to me 🤷
