Boomers don’t understand the concept of working from home. They think without micromanaging supervisors standing over your shoulder in ur cubicle ur just slacking and not making real money. Much like “we didn’t have computers when I was a young adult. We used yellow line paper to write notes on”. Progress terrifies them. It threatens the idea they have that their way is the ONLY way. Funny how everything bad in our society especially America is from that generation. Crony capitalism is evil. I feel for the raisin-poisoned mashed potato girl. I have some sort of horrifying disorder that means I burst out in laughter at the most inappropriate times. One time when my brother was sneakily hitting my side over and over at a grave site while they were lowering a friend’s dad into the ground, I busted out laughing. Horrifying. Horrifying! To try to salvage the moment, I put my head in my hands and tried to pretend I was actually crying. I knew I wouldn’t get away with it. I knew I had lost a friend. I knew I was going to be a pariah for the rest of time. But… Afterward, my aunt told me she was surprised at how upset I was at the funeral. I said, “You WERE?? You mean you COULD’NT TELL??” My brother told me that it had looked so much like actual sobbing that _he_ had to bite his tongue to not bust out laughing, himself. No one else even said a word. I had gotten away with it. I spent the rest of the day in happy disbelief, wondering if I should have actually gone to acting school. That day is seared upon my brain as both my most horrifyingly embarrassing and my greatest triumph. Also… brothers bring this kind of thing out in sisters.

My family dealt with a similar situation as OP in story one and my heart goes out to him and his family. My mother, after suffering a stroke in her early thirties, had her entire life change in a moment. One second she's working towards her master's, the next? She was forced to apply for disability. Shock and trauma often triggers behaviors that otherwise would never happened. In this time she maxed out her credit cards, took her mother's bank information and spent thousands before getting caught (which forced my grandmother into bankruptcy) and emotionally shut down during the process of trying to fix everything. I am so glad that OP is getting his wife the help she very clearly needs, because she needs it. She will improve with time. My mother required intense therapy and it took years to earn both the forgiveness and trust from the family. OP is going to have to continue to put his foot down and since his relationship seems to be good with his MIL, hopefully they can work together to help his wife.

@@ravanpee1325 that still doesn't mean the MIL knew OPs wife would have any issues and kept it from him and it's far from "everybody knows except OP." And we don't know if he knew his SIL was mentally ill beforehand - just that MIL understands how serious it is because she already lost one daughter to mental illness. I'm sure it came up at some point in the marriage because she has already passed away and that is unusual in someone young so he likely asked about it and learned about it before now. That said, anyone can go through a depressive episode, especially after losing a job and during a life altering pandemic so to assume this was 100% predictable and OP was somehow deceived into marrying a defective wife is not only gross but also incorrect.

Story 2 - At first, I was gonna say a soft ESH, but after the update, I'm saying NTA because it seems like the brother was trying to one-up OP: 1) Brother told GF to bring the potatoes, despite even GF having misgivings over it. (If it was really about "feeling like part of the family", then why did he not tell them about her and why did he not ask if there was anything NOT already accounted for?) 2) Brother went out of his way to ask that only the GF's potatoes be on the table (Yes, the GF expressed concern, but he didn't have to ask for OP's potatoes be excluded completely, he could've done it in a way that had both dishes be included). 3) Brother's comment of "I'm sure everyone is just glad to have a break from OP's potatoes". That, at least to me, feels very passive-aggressive, as if saying "See? My GF (and by extension I) can do better than you!" and his reaction when it backfired on him. This whole thing feels like some weird attempt to upstage or uproot OP's role for some unknown reason and it ended up instead making the brother look like an idiot and his GF getting hurt.

For story 2, I’m gonna give my personal perspective from the POV of someone whos main hobby is cooking and experimenting with different flavor/texture combinations, I think OP is NTA. Mainly because a laugh can genuinely be an involuntary reaction especially in such an awkward, tense atmosphere. But also because if you’re coming into something like a thanksgiving dinner with a unique or weird take on a dish, you HAVE to be prepared for people to tell you that they don’t like it or that it’s straight up not good. And I personally wouldn’t want someone to pretend to like it because if it’s bad, I don’t wanna make it again! If you really like cooking and take pride in it, you really can’t be that sensitive (and I’m SUPER sensitive emotionally, like I will cry watching videos of dogs being groomed because they’re so cute lol) about people not liking your creation. Do I get bummed if something I make flops? Of course! But do I take it personally to the point of tears if someone’s (or everyone’s) tastebuds don’t agree with something I CHOSE to make? Nope! Maybe I’m harsh or too serious about the topic but it’s wild to me that someone would think “Raisins in the mash potatoes! They’ll love it and have no reservations about it whatsoever!”. If I were her I’d be more upset that they lied to me and tried to pretend they liked it opposed to just being honest and saying it wasn’t good.

THIS! Thank you! I'm astounded at how many people judged OP for what sounded like a completely involuntary reaction! I don't experiment much with cooking, but I do with baking. I would never want people to tell me they like something if they didn't, that doesn't help me learn how to improve at all

She will be lazy and using depression as an excuse if she doesn't make improvement, now that she has a diagnosis and treatment. I'm happy that - like my also bipolar husband - you found treatment that works for you, but it would be disingenuous of us all to expect her to do a complete 180° overnight, and to not have rough patches. This situation didn't get to this point overnight, so likewise, expecting it to correct it's self at a snap (or not potentially get briefly worse before it gets better, depending on if she has to adjust to meds) is unreasonable. I don't find it fair to push conformation biases - as we tend to use our best selves, not our worst as a litmus test - on people, because everyone's recovery is different.

Granted, they might be very busy working from home, but I should think they have at least an hour (or even half an hour) out of every day to do some work on the garden to get it into a state where their children can play in it. Also, they seem to have had time in their apparently busy schedule to not only complain to their neighbour but also write this reddit post.

S2: NTA. Technically the sister didn't really mean to insult the gf, she was just trying to defend Op from the brother. But the brother overall is the AH for orchestrating this entire thing. Chelsea even knew this was probably a bad idea and he set her up for failure when she just wanted to make a good impression. S3: YTA and an entitled one. Op literally stay up looking for a reason to be hostile towards her. You're not even in the bedroom all day, but the thought of her being in that room is bothering you???? What kind of Karen bs is this?

The commentator was right, leave the brother at home and invite Chelsea for Xmas. She was gutsy enough to try a new recipe for her boyfriend’s family she’d never met before and gracious enough to listen and accept OP’s apology. I think most people would never want to go back after that crap show.

My dad's girlfriend is a part of Avon, but she doesn't actively sell it; she just joined for discounted makeup/other stuff. Avon actually originated in the US, and the history of the company is rather interesting, regardless of my feelings on the company itself. Pampered Chef is another one; don't like the setup, but I do like some of the products (mostly the stonewares).

I put raisins in my sweet potatoes, along with a bit of brown sugar, mallow extract, and a crust/topping of toasted almonds and pecans? So was confused why it would be an odd thing. Then I realized that the GF in the story might have added them to the regular ol' mashed ones. Then I was properly horrified at the thought. :)

Story 3: YTA Those who live in glass apartments shouldn't throw stones. OP's neighbor takes tons of precautions to make sure she creates as little noise as possible however it doesn't sound like OP or the kids afford her the same courtesy. If it's such an issue that OP knows her neighbor is working quietly underneath her then she needs to move out of the master bedroom and swap with whoever has the room above the neighbor's chosen bedroom. OP is a loco Avon scammer who pretends to work at home and is the Indisputable Nightmare Neighbor!

Hi Mark! Avon's been around almost as long as Tupperware, maybe longer, lol! Yeah, it's an MLM but I love some of their makeup and perfumes. BUT the neighbor *exists* ! Without the OP's approval! And pointed out that her kids are not being parented! Don't you know the OP is being inconvenienced? Her MLM is superior! Ok, I have tears from laughing now. I never thought I'd see an OP this completely unaware of their own self importance, to the point they trumped the tenant trying to get the landlord to evict the neighbors for the crime of their infant existing from their privately owned apartment that had nothing to do with the landlord yesterday.

We had (maybe still have, not sure) Avon in Australia. My mother used to be a rep back in the 80's. She made about 20 cents from each order. I think it was structured differently then though. Once Amway and similar companies landed here, they ruined a lot of people's finances with the way they operated. They are MLMS , but they are known as "pyramid schemes" (scams) here. That business structure is illegal here. We still have Amway and some others, they have altered their "business models" just enough to scrape into the legal category. A lot of us (oldies) who remember when they first appeared, still have strong feelings against them.

Yep, what you’re saying is true. Because I didn’t want to put a dent on friendships, I bought from friends selling this product and other similar products from other companies doing similar similar schemes. And it came to a point if the friendships were real or because of the products we’re in contact. My children had the same experiences to the point that we all miss them, but since the connection seemed to be the selling and us buying, let’s just say we’re still missing other now although it’s liberating not to be tied to anything outside of friendships and not out of obligation…😢

I never considered Avon to be an MLM in the way that most companies are. I'm 58 years old and one of my best friends from high school...her mom was an 'Avon Lady' was we use to call her. The mom never had to buy stuff and then try to sell it...she only took in orders, then when orders came in, she went to the customer's home and gave them the product and collect the money on it. She also never tried to recruit others into the business. Even if she did this, only so she could be the only rep in our itty bitt town, again, she never had to order stuff first then try to sell it and pay for it...which is what many MLMs make their reps do...take on an inventory and try to get sell it. I do believe that Avon still operates that way...they don't force their reps to buy inventory and then try to sell it. It might be true that reps get extra money if they recruit more reps...but I think for the most part, Avon isn't like a real MLM type set up. The OP probably could do more to better her future, but it sounds like she doesn't want to put in the effort... 'doesn't want to seek out education...that seems to be offered' was one part that seemed to be mentioned....and she could get off her ass for 10 minutes a day and work on the back yard...or garden as the UK calls them....better yet, if the kids are ages 8 on up...make them help in yard work. I was 6 years old and helping my mom and dad with yard work...I pulled weeds, and raked leaves or raked up mowed grass with the help of my 3 siblings.

I didn't sell it to get rich I sold it to get myself and family members the discount.
