AJ Hawk is by far my favorite player. We grew up in the same city, went to the same high school, he played for my favorite NCAA team, and now at my favorite NFL team. He is incredible and he does not copy Clay Matthews. Please remember that 1) AJ is older than Clay. 2) AJ's hair has been that long since playing for OSU.

That med-ball-catching on the back extension bench is not for beginners ! i bet it works great on explosiveness in the lower back, but the risk of injury seems huge for the average.

OK. I got you. You are correct that virtually all football players bench press. My original point was that it shouldn't be the focus of a young athlete's training. You're on the verge of realizing this for yourself if/when you guys have a pro-day. The number of drills the scouts run are insane.
@swoletrain4412 жыл бұрын
It isn't as difficult as you think. From the guys I have trained with, I can say that, at least, 30 percent of them could not bench 300 pounds. I played with a guy in college whose bench was over 600 pounds and he did not get much playing time. Secondly, if you slow any play down and do a BIOMECHANICAL analysis of the play, you would see that the bench motion is not used as much as you think. The reason why the bench press and 40 yard dash is important is because of scouts.

Smart guy, where in there did I disagree with you? Im just bringing up a point that if you go to a gym, the most common question young kids (mainly High School kids) ask is "How much you lift?" Now what lift are they referring to 90% of the time? That's what I thought. Besides that, all I hear them talking about (or exaggerating) is their love life to each other.

@sharif33 If your goal was to bait me into a silly argument, then I apologize. I didn't want to be rude and ignore your comment, so I will educate. I will also tell you that NO ONE does a max test. Your TRAINING should always be maximum effort or you are wasting your time and energy. Maximum effort does not equal maximum lift. And trust me, there are plenty of upper body muscles besides the pectoralis major, anterior deltoids, and triceps.

The point is that being able to bench more doesn't make you a better athlete. The young athletes want to become better at what they do, but they assume that the bench press is the easiest way to improve. The top five NFL combine bench pressers have a total of 0 pro bowls (the best bench press record holder didn't even get to play in the NFL). Though it may be glamorized, it isn't a one-way ticket to success on the field, and more people need to understand that.

Not if it isn't accompanied by speed and agility. There are guys who are repping 225 pounds 3 times as many times as me, but I play at a higher level. Scouts know what it takes to be a player. I agree that it will open some eyes if you bust out 30 reps, but if you run a 6 second 40, you'll be sitting...
