AJ Styles in 2016 was excellent, the fact that he showed up and won over Vince was remarkable. This title reign was the reward and he didn't disappoint in the slightest. Honestly better than anticipated many thought AJ would never come to WWE and some thought if he did he never touch the richest prize in the company let alone hold it. They could've let Cena hold the championship to Mania and do a rematch with AJ for the title that would've been another banger in their collection of matches together and I think it would've helped both men who really didn't have anything great to work with going into WM 33.

AJ for the longest time was my hero in TNA and just seeing him go from that young kid who could fly like no one else to becoming at one point the most important person in WWE is nothing short of inspirational. I know people look at Punk, Bryan, Owens and Zayn as heroes in the same sort of way, but AJ to me just felt like the main character above them all that I had invested so much time into and knew he would be amazing and I'm just so glad to see him and Cena face each other in probably the best match. AJ will always be one of the best wrestlers of all time for me, and probably imo the most professional wrestler of all time.

@@mrmoviemanic1 Facts I remember how much I liked him in TNA as a kid back in 2008-2009 when he had that feud with Kurt Angle. Watched him for years during that run so when he debuted in WWE in 2016 I was going crazy to see him.

AJ's 1st WWE title reign was enjoyable to watch. He kept putting epic battles with Cena and Ambrose while also making James Ellsworth popular with the crowd. AJ's WWE title reign was definitely one of the strong points of both WWE and SD in 2016-early 2017.

AJ's first WWE title reign was, for lack of a better term, phenomenal. His feud with Dean Ambrose, the introduction of James Ellsworth, and his feud with Cena in the build-up to the Royal Rumble was fantastic. AJ played an integral part in the resurgence of SmackDown in 2016.

Smackdown in 2016 after the Draft was must-watch TV. The whole roster had a chip in their shoulders since Raw shafted them, and AJ was the right guy to lead the charge.

Smackdown 2016 was a top 5 Smackdown year ever from the ones I had seen 2002, 2003, 2009, 2016 and 2020 are the ones I enjoyed the most.

@@restintolife2180 2007 started fantastic with Batista vs Undertaker feud and Matt Hardy vs MVP feud but it went to shit when they gave the Great Khali the title. Undertaker and Edge injuries was the downfall of 2007 Smackdown. 2005 started great with Cena becoming the face and he left to be replaced by Batista at the peak of his popularity but Batista vs JBL feud left a lot to be desired. Undertaker at the beginning of 2005 looked like he didnt have any direction because Randy Orton was injured after Wrestlemania 21 in which he was out for like 4 months but after Orton came back it was one of the best feuds. Kurt Angle was also involved in some weird stuff like his feud with the Big Show and had no direction after his legendary Wrestlemania match with HBK which had the weird Angle vs Booker T feud in which Angle wanted to have sex with Booker T's wife then Angle left to Raw to start his feud with HBK once again. 2005 Smackdown was mixed because Eddie was going to win the title from Batista but then he unfortunately passed away. 2005 and 2007 had some great stuff but also some horrible stuff which make them a mixed bag.

Styles also kicked out of the avalanche AA in SummerSlam 2016 and after that he hit Cena with the Phenomenal Forearm then the Styles Clash to win that match. In the Rumble, Styles was again going for the finishing spot for the Forearm but Cena countered that unlike the last time. And then hit him with 2 AAs for good measure.

I can't say his first title reign was better than his second. On one hand his feud with Dean Ambrose & James Ellsworth were more entertaining than his feud with Samoa Joe & Shinsuke Nakamura. On the other hand he had better matches with Joe & Nakamura that unfortunately had bad endings. His heel promos are better than his babyface ones but his title reign was longer the second.

AJ shouldn't have lost at Royal Rumble to Cena. He should've won & retained. Then go on to drop the title at Elimination Chamber since WWE wanted to do Orton vs Wyatt for the title at mania. Cena winning the title at the Rumble just to lose it at the Chamber (a month later?) made the record tying an after thought and meaningless imo. Cena needed a more meaningful build to his record tying world championship win and losing at the rumble would've done exactly that and given AJ even more credibility as a man that Cena can't beat. Cena losing would've built doubt that not only he can't beat AJ but he may never actually break Flair's record. Losing would've gave Cena's returns even more meaning/purpose because it'll be more focused around Cena still trying for the record. Every Cena return would mean more because he now has 2 ghosts that he's trying to catch; AJ Styles-the man he can't beat & Breaking Flair's record. They could do a bigger story of AJ vs Cena at Wrestlemania now because of the built up history where Cena finally beats AJ.
