Hey there, Sporting Fan here. You touched on one of the biggest thing of Amorim. Adaptation to the players he has, and most importantly of what he thinks will work better against a particular oponent. There really is no tradicional 6, 8, 10, winger target man, etc... There are 2 flank players the do it all, double pivot that will play many ways, 3 at the back that start everything and 3 at the front, that will also play open or closed, inverted, 2 strikers and support etc... Throught out the 5 years he has done a little bit all. Always changing players and adapting from other positions. This year is just the result of a 5 year construction in wich all players were chosen by him, and its like nothing we have ever seen here. He has his system, and will just adapt the players to it as he sees best. Prepare to see unexpected starting elevens, especially if he reaches into your youth system, like he did in Sporting. That was key to imidiately stabilize the team, and estabilsh stable hierarchys. In sporting he tweaked his system quite often, to adapt to the players coming and going and to the league that started reacting to Sporting´s football defending with 11 players, bouncers, and the army. This year he has utilized about 23 players wich is the whole squad basicly, in just 15/16 games, the machine is what it matters. And no matter who plays, the system is always on point, it´s quite amazing. The righ/left foot game is one of the things he does great, he understands very well when to play inverted or same side foot. Sporting has had games with 8/9 left footers at the same time he likes his leftys. But no matter the tactical approach he will have, the biggest thing about him is really, the work rate, the belief and willing to win that he instilled in the players over night. In the last five years i cant remember a game even in defeat where i can go, yeah they just didnt try, or produced bad football. There were bad nights, never bad performances. And also in defeat, his words were always the same, the other coach prepared the game better, wich in Portugal, with our latin condition, it never allows any kind of humility in defeat, its always the referee, the weather , the media, the seagulls.... Amorim just says, yeah the other coach was better. Off to the next game we go. The way that mentalitys changed in the club when he arrived, is unparalleled.

But MU has one of the worst adaptability. If you keep changing the tactics they get confuse and their performance drops. I doubt he will keep changing tactics, ETH did it and quickly realised that it does not work for MU players

The minute a bad season or bad game happens, the player/manager is terrible, cue news stories about club talking to other managers and transfer rumours and infighting in the club etc..

Lazy comment. Watch the game closely. The tactics were bad and left them exposed every time. No patterns of play or coordinate press. Acres of spaces…One could argue that those very players actually carried EtH for way too long by individual performances. He should have been dismissed last season.

Sporting just whupped City 4-1 last night. I’m a new converted fan of Amorim. Took me some time to warm to him. Thanks in part to your videos, very informative, helps a lot in understanding the philosophy of the coach.

At the start of 23/24, even ETH was aiming for that 3-1-6 shape. If one CM is a deep ball winner like Ugarte or Case and the other is a box-to-box or a roaming playmaker like Mainoo or Eriksen, then this 3-4-3 will also form a 3-1-6 shape eventually after the first phase. Here, the major difference which makes this more defensively solid is wing-backs providing the width. So, if we do play a winger as a WB, he will have to learn to do alot defensively. The other benefit is that the roles are clear, no inverting FBs etc, so the players aren't overloaded with information. The other benefit is emphasis on central progression, so that's a plus and the more technical players will thrive. I supported ETH till the end but it just seemed we needed to start fresh with the new ownership. Fans and the players can't scapegoat the manager now, atleast in his early months. I am excited for Amorim but not only because he is an up-and-coming manager but more because of his 3-4-3 approach, because it has always been an iteration of 4-2-1-3 since Jose.

Double Pivot in the system of Ruben Amorim. Not a CDM and CM. It is particularly important considering the midfielders we have. Ugarte, Casemiro. and Mainoo, neither of whom thrives in the role of single CDM. Erik ten Hag's biggest mistake.

Yeah I think we will see the usage of those wide rotations, particularly early on, almost a simplistic "quick fix" to help us progress the ball in the short term. As we progress into next season and beyond I'd expect us to continue with that, whilst also trying to improve our central progression with the inside forwards

No-one has talked about Amorim’s wingbacks do not need to be the best defenders. We have one less winger position, but could Garnacho be moved to left wingback with Rashford on the left inside channel. Might reduce his wastefulness and build his wider game, crosses, overlaps etc.

Garnacho is right-footed - he'll struggle to deliver good crosses, his safe passes inside will be slower, he will be predicatable in possession, and struggle to defend when facing the play.

Amorim have played more wingers than wingbacks this season. They are really not defensively top, but they are suppose to "just" be the wide option. Either to draw the fullbacks away to make room for the inside forwards, or as a wide passing option for the cross.

I don’t know what it is but the idea of Casemiro at central centre back tucked behind a Mainoo/Ugarte midfield seems attractive. I think it would be less demanding role for case who could excel with his deep lying outlet capabilities and quick pop passes. Naturally would mean De Ligt on the right, Martinez left, with De Ligt succeeding case in that position going forward as Yoro eases into Amorims system and the expectation of his right centre backs along with the club in general.

It'll be really interesting to see who Amorim gives minutes to on the wing. Quenda and Catamo are their most used wing players, and they're VERY attacking, so I could definitely see Garnacho, Amad, and Antony get minutes in those positions, along with more defensive options like Dalot and Amass (hopefully).

First person I see that actually put Anthony where he could actually flourish. I think playing him on the wing in a deeper role would suit him. He is not great in the air but he is quick and can be physical if required.

Although I'd like Casemiro to flex his passing ability and range a little more in the base of that overloaded midfield with the CB freeing him up. He could teach Ugarte a thing or two about it before he leaves. Hojlund Amad Bruno needs to be that front 3.

IMO Mazroui has to be out there somewhere. He's been so good so far in a United kit. He might begin where Yoro is depending on fitness. Could also see him where Antony is. Could also see Garanacho over Rashford, but maybe this system will get the best out of Rashford again. But like you said, he'll adapt instead of shoehorning guys into roles.

I think the best WB combination is Garnacho on the left and Dalot on the right, staggered, with a fullback and a winger. Antony might actually do well/better in this system, on either side, but he has to prove himself first.

It's not that United doesn't have players for Amorim's tactical system, it's more about if United players can link up in Amorim's system. Those three on the front, Pote, Trincão and Gyokeres with the support from the wingbacks can play with their eyes closed.

Not much difference in the 3-2-5 possession shape that is so common in football right now and the 3-4-3 shape that Amorim plays. However, in both shapes, Bruno's game will suffer and has suffered this season. I don't think he can play in the inside 10 / winger position. Bruno's game has suffered this season in the 3-2-5 possession shape and I dont think he fits Amorim's 3-4-3 unless he plays in central midfield in the double pivot. As for the wing backs, you have to play a left footer on the left and a right footer on the right. My XI Onana Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot Ugarte Bruno Alvaro Carreras Amad Hojlund Rashford Yoro, Mainoo and Garnacho cannot be starting every week. Theyre too young. Mount, Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, Malacia all need to be moved and replaced in my opinion. Also, if Bruno and Rashford have trouble playing in the 3-4-3 they need to be moved on too. If Rashford is to stay, he can't be playing right wing. Amad might not be good enough so we might also need a world class right winger. The forward line is the problem and will be in any formation we play. There isnt enough goals and creativity.

I think Hojlund is the natural pick for the striker role, but he rarely plays the full 90 minutes, and once he goes off it gets a bit trickier 🤔 Zirkzee is NOTHING like Hojlund or Gyokeres, and personally I could see him more in the 10 role under Amorim than as a striker. Wouldn't be surprised to see Rashford used as the 2nd choice striker.

United are actually surprisingly close to having a squad full of depth that Ruben Amorim would be fully happy with. GK2: Manuel Riemann - Free Transfer in summer - Bayindir wants to start, he isn't going to get it. Make a profit and bring in an elite back up Riemann who is one of the best passing GK in the world. LCB1: Gonçalo Inácio - £50m- Ideal LCB, great passer and tackler. Martinez can now move into being a back up LCB and back up CDM. LWB1: Alvaro Fernandez - £16.7m- Solves a huge problem for United with an incredibly well round Wing back. CM(8): Angel Gomes - Free Transfer in summer - Ideal Kobbie Mainoo back up and someone who can play in both CAM spots under Amorim. would get loads of game time. United solve all of their issues for £66.7m. They are getting £25m for Sancho. They will get atleast £12m for Bayindir, then sell Casemiro to Saudi for £25m and Malacia somewhere for £5-7m and United will not have to reach into their pockets this summer to get the squad they want. A 34 man squad mixed with youth, experience and quality. @@habiladam6363 I don't disagree with you but I always thought Mazaroui had a little bit more about him going forward. I wouldn't be against swapping them though as you are right about defensively. Ideally we had someone like Jeremie Frimpong who would blow the doors off the right had side of the field at RWB but we should probably stick with what we have right now.

@@habiladam6363 I have been thinking ever since we signed Mazaroui, that maybe Dalot might to start to become expendable, I think he is a perfectly decent player and at times pretty good but I just would rather a out and out RWB to replace him that offers something different from what we don't have. If we were flush with money and not worrying about FFP, I would 100% chase someone like Jeremie Frimpong and just blow teams away with his pace and crossing.

@@dublin7 I'd keep Dalot though, he will run up and down. We haven't rested him much - he's played the most minutes in our whole squad for MU and Portugal. Defensively, he is alright, and still young-ish, only 24, so room to grow and improve. Still would like another RB or RWB though

Deligt in the middle of the defence because he has areial ability and is comfortable with the ball at his feet as compared to Maguire, Lindelof and Yoro(yoro is not very good in the air yet) Martinez is lacking in height

Antony would do well as a wingback, energetic, maybe lacking in quality and a bit individualistic, but proper coaching on tactical and technical issues should set him straight or else he is gone. It’s a clean slate, grab it and save his dwindling career. United spent loads on the boy, improve/develope his potential even if to offload next summer.

Amorim's wing players need to hold the width, so Dalot CANNOT be played on the left. 😬 He constantly inverts from that wing, which has caused us (particularly Rashford) enough problems this season already. He could be a revelation on the right, but on the left it just would not work.

I am of a different opinion. I think the players are ready for 3-4-3 after 2 years with a football, or was it a manager they didn't understand. When it comes to wing back, it could be as simple as Mazraoui starting as LWB and Dalot as RWB. It may be that a winger like Garna or Antony get a try, but time will tell.😏

ETH did bring high pressing theory, but not until Vanisteroy implemented it in everyday exercise that we have a decent enough pressing block in Brentford game. But is Vanisteroy good enough? I don't know. For the love of god just bring at least 3 techniques coach from Sporting Lisbon. Hag was never big enough to handle a club like United and in a similar vein, Antony is simply not up to the elite playing standards of United at their best - he is nowhere near. Both Hag and Antony should retire to the Eredivisie, along with Zirkzee.

I'm pretty sure Mason Mount's best ever season was playing in a 3-4-3, but he was one of the 10s, not one of the 8s. Personally, I think he is massively wasted as an 8, and will never succeed at United if most of his minutes are spent there.
