Im getting ready for this years grafting project! I have a grip of seedlings I grew as rootstock to try and graft a piece of my grandmas avocado tree onto them. Not sure of the variety but it gives good fruit! I have one successful graft so far from socal winter of 2023.

Good way to go with a tree growing close to your home. I had to take down one, against my will, do to the same reason but I replace it immediately with a smaller, "friendlier to structure" tree. Greetings!

Hi Aj. Greetings again from Cape Town. Just a heads up. I did exactly the same on 10 Nov 24 (late spring). 10 grafts, 4 varieties Fuerte x 4, Hass x 2, Reed x 2 and Pinkerton x 2. Also double modified cleft on top. reed and fuerte. 8 grafts took. 80% success rate Reed on top failed and 1 hass failed. Fuerte on top grew more than a foot in a month. Was a favour to my brother. His house, his seedling. Thank u for your teachings

I only wish I had viewed your video on grafting a couple of years ago during the pandemic. I grafted my apple tree with another variety of apple. Little success 2nd year. Some years ago, in Pacific Beach a neighbor had a avocado/pear tree. Pears had a similar meat only sweeter.

The story of Hass is very interesting, “A man kept it as a root stock but it never took his grafts, so he let it grow out, he was going to remove the tree, but his daughter loved the taste so he kept it, patented it and sold the patent for only $5,000.”

I followed greg alder's advice to get a year round harvest and so ive planted 8 varieties to try to guarantee it: Winter- Fuerte Pinkerton Spring- Hass Gwen Summer- Reed Lamb Hass Fall- Mexicola Grande Stewart What do you think about grafting one variety from each season onto a single tree to make a 4-in-1 "all year harvest" tree? Or maybe even all 8?

That's a good idea. I say go for it! Just remember some of these varieties are more vigorous than others, so you'll have to do some selective pruning

Wow thanks! Scions come from own trees or from friends’ trees. Best place to get scions is to join the California rare fruit growers club (CRFG) they have scion exchanges every year!

Hi AJ. I like how I can scroll along the timeline of the video and you have labeled the different tasks at those moments in the video. I like how the branches are low on the rootstock plant - the Reed Seedling - and it seems as though it will make for lower scaffolding branches and you can prune it better to keep it low. That will be a popular tree. Thanks for the video. And your Jan Boyce scion being an "A" type flowering tree will help to pollinate the the Nimlioh, Sharwil, Nabal, and Hellen scions which are all "B" type scions. If the Reed seedling is like its parent, you will have another "A" type scion to help the cause. How do you keep the camera so steady for the videos? I'm in zone 9b (25deg F). If I plant a single Mexicola Grande tree, could I get fruit by grafting B type scions for a multigrafted tree? versus planting a second tree next to it? Trying to weigh the pros and cons of multiple trees vs a single multigrafted tree.

It’s hard to find good growth buds when the trees are in flower. I would wait until the tree is finished flowering and leaf buds start to appear again. A good time for Santa Barbara is Late summer to early fall
