A hydra's heart would be special if it can keep up with all the extra heads it can grow. So did someone ever have a terribly suicidal idea of uplifting a Hydra? We deal with awakened beasts and pets many times in D&D, so coming across a Hydra that is smarter than the average Hydra might be a terrifying prospect.

Just a bit of trivia. The imagery that prompted the idea of the hydra is real. What the ancients witnessed was what is referred to as a mating ball. What it actually is, is a very, very large collection of male snakes that coil around a female snake in some fairly unique mating ritual. It's something that is still able to be found today, though humanity has gone to great lengths to diminish the snake populations everywhere we live (which is to say, planet Earth). In truth the ancients probably encountered this while perhaps digging a well, or in caverns or ravines and understandably freaked out, and thus the legend was born.

This was the first video of the series I watched, and I have to say I was immediately blown away by how well researched it was. I ran a hydra not long after this, it was for a party over very very over geared level 10's, 6 of them. (I know, unusually, I picked up for another DM who made some choices I wouldn't have.) Needless to say, I put the hydra in a bog with floating biomass and very murky water, and made it's reach 15ft, increased size category by one. It absolutely tore the party to shreds, they all made it out, but it was a rude awakening. They are all really excited to go back and fight it again. We'll be doing that this weekend. Thanks again, this content is awesome.

The Weapon and Equipment guide for 3.0-3.5 described how to train hydras, each head had to be trained one by one (keeping the other heads asleep, charmed or dominated), making it one of the hardest creatures to train. It is not mentioned often but mind affecting spells with single targets like Charm Monster or Dominate Monster only affect one head each time.
@tomkerruish29824 жыл бұрын
In mathematics, there's something called Goodstein sequences, which have been reimagined as the Hydra game. Essentially, not only does the body have multiple necks, but so do the heads themselves, with their own second-order heads, and so on (but only finitely far). Cutting off a head (usually) causes more heads (and necks!) to grow. It's a rather deep theorem that, no matter your head-cutting strategy, you are guaranteed eventual victory, although only after a very, very, VERY long time.

Been interested in Hydra since the Disney movie, and into an interest into mythology. The general idea that fire stopped the head growing was Heracles sealed up the wound after cutting the head. I think the Hydra would most be open for DM description to explain the process, and possibly reward creativity if player attempts something of similar effect, or punish if say they wanted to focus the fire on something specific that would not effect the lost head wound.

When facing one, use fire and lots of it, having a pyromaniac mage, wizard or sorcerer, the latter I recommend huge amounts of caution, especially if facing said creature in a swampy environment with lots of decay from dead rotting carcasses and natural gasses bubbling out from the mud, or alternatively torches, crossbows & longbows with greek fire in the tips of incendiary bolts & arrow, greek fire grenades & explosive flasks & likewise for javelins, again caution first. Good things, scales are waterproof, worth good money perhaps even more then manticore in certain cases, especially in a big one, venom glands hard to rip out needs a good axe but worth up to 50-80 gold coins a pair.

This reminds me of the hydra I created called "Gydia", a hydra that I added the "Monster of Legend" template to so many years ago. Of course, then the poison damage was directed towards the strength score instead of hit points at a DC 25, -1d6 strength. Proud of my players whenever they realized that Gydia's role wasn't as a monster to be destroyed but rather the secret weapon needed to destroy the true threat, an evil green dragon and her yaun-ti cultist they had no hope of defeating on their own. Needless to say, even a mighty green dragon didn't stand the chance against a beast that had 12 bites that inflicted strength damage... 12 bites, twelve potential failures, to a max of 12d6 strength damage. Just nasty. Almosts felt... Right that the proud intelligent evil beast fell to what was basically an animal.

For DMS! Hydras are dangerous if your party has a lack of damage, and should be a strategic battle. It is not a beastie that you throw at them if it's a gushy-damage battle you want. You should consider running away as a viable strategy, make it a hydra-chase-scene (very exciting!) as AJ says, remember their heads are very dangerous, doing tons of damage and of course should do some poison damage! And I can tell you from personal experience, do not, underestimate their REACH! Sorry for two comments, but they're not that relevant to each other.

I add poison to the Hydra bites. For those who CAN be poisoned, they drop the maximum hit points by the same damage as its bite damage plus a save vs. poison to do a tiny bit more damage if that fails (1d6). So, the poison is not very strong but it has a severe effect even if you SAVE against the poison... the lowered maximum HPs. That stays until the poison is cured. I do the poison blood thing too but it loses its toxic nature after an hour unless applied as a weapon coating and left to dry. It rehydrates in the blood of a target for one super-poison effect and the coating is neutralized after that (like wounding a target, blood wetting it). The toxic nature of hydra blood can only be long-term stored if you find a way to dry it quickly and it becomes a one-use toxin once rehydrated. Yes, I went epic level NERD on hydras in my campaigns. I also had a table for how each one is made unique with some tweaks to their appendages or fringe abilities/disadvantages. People who read the original sources hate me at times. I "cube the sphere" in my campaigns just to make people who do that sometimes have their fore-knowledge backfire.

Little bastard shit in my vest and you can imagine the glee on my DMs face when the multiple reduction spells wore off of the dung I unknowingly carried with me....damn near drowned in it when it popped up to original size....💩💩💩😒🙁😝😡😠 Talk about being shitfaced!

You mentioned that Hydras in your opinion that both fire and acid should make it so the Hydra can't regenerate two heads. Though I understand that some Hydras acid might be powerful, swampy-poisonous-riddled Hydras should in my opinion have some resistance to acid. (Not immunity, there's a difference) As such perhaps a better way might be like this: if the acid damage is high enough, then it'll stop it from spawning two heads. Perhaps 15ish. Just an opinion, as always AJ you have a fantastic way of researching and delivering these videos. : ]

I've only used hydra twice in my 18 year DMing experience. My Player characters weren't/aren't generally fond of fighting anything that can be mistaken for a dragon by a random npc. That said, rather than just upping the head count I have some suggestions for making Hydra encounters harder. The base hydra is the highly regenerative, extremely poisonous, semi-aquatic creature described in the video, but a slightly different take on the Hydra is that may fit into a game is a blending of the Cryo and Pyro Hydra to form an elementally resistant hydra. So if you opt for this version, the hydra can have heads that take on an elemental "charge". Generally speaking, either fire or ice keep to the lore already in the game, but any elemental damage type could work. "Necrotic", "Holy" etc are exotic variants, but not outside of the possible scope of elemental damage types in 5th edition. If the hydra has at least a single head with a "Charge", elemental damage of that type does not harm the Hydra, but instead heals it. This removes the use of one such elemental damage type on the hydra until the offending head is cut off. If you want to nudge it a little more towards the high difficulty, you could have the elemental damage charge the breath weapon. If you want the difficulty toned down, cap the elemental damage that can be absorbed each round and limit the breath weapon usage (obviously....), but remember that if you have an elementally aligned hydra, you're going to want to include lore for that in the surroundings. Was this a purposeful augmentation by a dragon or wizard that had access to elemental spells or was this naturally occurring? If it's natural, the environment is going to impact oppositely aligned elemental effects (so like... maybe the party's spell caster takes a hit to caster level while casting opposite polarity spells). If the hydra absorbs enough damage to restore a head, the 'restored' head is a charged head instead; obviously the elemental hydra can't exceed it's hit point total, but, by cutting off a head and pumping it with the right elemental damage, you could convert a normal hydra into a fully elemental version of it's self. I do not think you should give the hydra multiple charged heads, as that quickly makes them immune to elemental damage that's needed to halt their regeneration. I have used one cryohydra this way. The party was not amused, but the twitchy fireball sorcerer helped see the party through.

Nah the topic is actually the indomitable spirit of the heart, you keep on trying after your lies are defrauded and you keep making up more and more lies to keep your mistakes from stop being defrauded and then in the end you say I give up you win, then the other guy says oh my God I screwed up.politics man

yeah, but you got to admit, a classic hydra looks like a rope frayed at one end.

So could one theoretically hold this monster under the water for over an hour and drown it?
@Reptrilian5 жыл бұрын
Theoretically yes, but you would a large size being at least to do so.

Ya I could see a picture of Hercules in wizard robes. Ya he was half God and almost impossible to kill so he became a magic user lol

To be fair long-term he'd be a lot scarier that way....

Hey can anyone help me out! I’m working with my dm on turning my very happy helpful barley harmful Druid into an evil killing machine The idea so far is Adric (my Druid) get captured by an unknown evil villain (probably close to endgame boss) and is somehow changed psychologically having his personality change But my problem is how would one (staying as close to spells and things that a pc could use at some point) go about doing this? So far the only thing I could think of is wish but maybe there are a few combinations of spells that can change someone in this way. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ help is highly appreciate and encouraged!!! hahaha

Gerbil13 True although what magic should that be from? How would someone channel that?
@gerbill136 жыл бұрын
hmm. can make it a " coff " random " coff" draw. or make a potion with a similar chaotic effect. in the game i am in we had 8 chaos potions with a 1d100 effect. can make a cursed item.

Gerbil13 Nice hahaha we have a game show type of thing where you throw an axe at the actor (it’s all magic illusions or something) and the better a shot the better chance of a good reward but still mostly random if you hit

A curse of some sort? Demonic possession? Tortured till his mind snaps? Brainwashing? Oooo, so many possibilities.
