Ubisoft has so many damn reasons why people don't like them and their games, I'll list a few. Removal of multiplayer features years after a games released, Removal of games from library after customer purchase, Ubisoft's shitty NFT scam called 'Ubisoft Quartz', Insanely priced game editions, Singleplayer games with microtransactions incentivized by roadblock grind tatics, Multiplayer games filled to the brim with season passes and high priced microtransactions, CEO saying 'gamers need to get used to not owning games', Franchise fatigue and generic game making processes, Terrible launcher 'Ubisoft connect', Low quality and bug ridden game releases, SA and toxic work environment reports etc etc. All of this combined with a frankly at bare minimum an obviously controversial main protag for this game its no surprise the game has a lot of negative buzz around it.

I find the problem with AC Shadows is that Yaskue was a real person and in past AC games the protagonists were fictional and now all of a sudden they decide to have a real person as the protagonist. Not really an AC fan to begin with so this game won't really affect me. If this game would have come out 15 years ago there wouldn't have been such a response. Most media feels to be pushing ideas that a large number of people don't agree with so often now that every time it happens it elicits a stronger response. It's not that people are inherently racist, it's that the things they've always loved has changed in ways they don't like. Media companies use currently existing IP with a large fan base to push these ideas which only serve to anger people even more. Star wars, Lotr, LoU2, etc. If companies made original IP with their ideas and it came out amazing, people would be far more accepting.

I do think the whole Yasuke situation is a bit more nuanced then ''everybody is just racist or wrong.'' For me, as a fan of Japanese history I know he's real, he was a retainer as Alex correctly pointed out and so CAN BE considered a Samurai, he was never officially called one because around that period it didn't really work that way. I'll even go further and say he is an interesting and intriguing character and I am actually curious how he will turn out. However, I do question Ubisoft's motives. You kind of write off people who say that its pushing a message but even to me there's hints that he's just there to pander, not because he is actually their favourite choice or if there's actually passion to bring him to life. My reasoning is simple; Ubisoft has without fail made the protag of Assassins creed a representation of the people said assassins creed takes place in. Ezio is Italian, The unity guys are French, the Origin guy is a Medjay from Egypt. See where I am headed? Suddenly Yasuke is their first choice for a Samurai when there's plenty and I do mean plenty big named Samurai you could've gone for instead. He's clearly a break in that pattern, Yasuke is speculated to come from Ethiopia or Nigeria, so he's very much not native Japanese. Does the girl offset this? Maybe. Again, my criticism isn't so much of Yasuke being there as it is me having immense distrust for Ubisoft. All in all, I think Joe is right in that waiting and seeing is the best option here. But I did want to point out a lot of us that see him as potentially problematic do not do it because of him, rather because it is a bit of a situation where it could be simple pandering. And pandering is both bad for us gamers and those that want representation, because I am willing to bet no self respecting individual wants to be represented by a poorly written pander laden character. Anyway that's just my two cents.

If any company tried to pander to me, hire me for the color of my skin and not because of my talent and skill, etc not only would i feel offended but i would see it as them being fake and wouldn't give me joy; it would actually cause the opposite. When it comes to games and movies, story and entertainment should always come first, and not an agenda, etc If the main character then happens to be a woman, black, asian, purple or whatever, then it doesn't really matter; as long as the story and the implementation of whatever they are trying to do is good. But these days companies go with the color, gender, sexual preference first. Meritocracy should rule over all those. It's actually sad. Aside from very rare exceptions, gaming is pretty much dead. the problem is not that it is about a black samurai which wasn't a samurai since he never saw battle, was a weapons carry and served for only 15 months. the problem is that it IS NOT about a JAPANESE samurai. Every other AC game featured protagonists from that period and location, but they did Japan dirty. Also, it's not about a woman assassin since there are multiple lead female characters in AC and there were women shinobi back then. History aside, this is just another woke, diversity issue where they take away from males and bring females and people of other ethnicities and shove them down our throats. Personally, I wanted a Ghosts of Tsushima game in the AC universe. People in general expected this game ever since AC2 came out and Ubisoft, once again didn't deliver as we wanted The other reason for the outrage is the pricing. If you buy the poverty version, you play 3 days late and you don't get whatever mission. No matter what, people will always support this and you can see that by the number of preorders. I shat on the Napoleon movie for how stupid their "historical accuracy" sucked or how Napoleon was depicted, and I shit on this AC for the same reason. Historical fiction is a thing and AC has been historical fiction, but they have done a pretty great job with historical figures in the past, but here they just sucked. AC was supposed to be like going into the past, into real historical events, and this irregularity thrown into it which changes history into a sort of "what if?" scenerio, which was the Assassin's Creed and we experience that era through the eyes of an Assassin of the creed or the decendent of one. That's what made it a historical fiction and to me, that's what made the series special. It was respectful to that for the longest time. Also, have we ever played as a historical figure in AC as a MC before? I wonder why we're starting now? People don't have to care, but I have always been picky on how historical events or people have been represented. I find it fun to pick out what is historically accurate and what's not. I can be picky about Napoleon and nobody cares, but now I'm picky over AC shadows and Yasuke and the female "shinobi" character and now I'm a "racist" and a "sexist". Fuck all that gaslighting BS. I explained that the games throw you into real historical settings and throw in the irregularities that involve the creed. It's literally part of the story as well as the templars are supposed to be some secret evil org that they put Desmond into the animus to look into his ancestors memories or live through his ancestors memories to find out things about the templars. If I remember correctly, which I'm confident I am, the game paints the templars as hidden or erased from history even though they continue to exist in modern times in the game. So the games literally painted it as irl history, but they added in the war against the creed and templars into the game's story. I have no clue how people so willfully ignore this part of the games to make their point when your completely ignoring mine...

My only critical thing about Shadows that I agree on is that Japanese people and also bunch of western were looking forward to play as a Japanese samurai in an Assassins Creed game. While there were great games that had one, as far as I understand most main protagonists (male and female version) in those games where natives or at least like "what you would imagine from that time period" people and now when it finally came to Japan they picked this 1 guy who is not. I think it will be fun to play as him since he fits the bruiser style and she is going to be fun as well. I'm looking forward to it and just bought for crazy discount the previous 3 games with DLC to get back into the series. Not going to PreOrder though

@Joshtapus Yes, it does affect the story to a tremendous degree. Box-checking characters by default rob the writer of freedom. There are so many political roadblocks you have to navigate around as you draw a female ("she can't be too pretty") or black guy ("he can't wear chains or be a drug user") that just ain't there for white guys. You probably noticed how they always seem to go out of their way to emphasize that a "disenfranchised" character is intellectually superior to a white male lead. Typically achieving the opposite: the "loser" white guy steals the show because he's the only one that audiences of all backgrounds can actually associate with, as opposed to those Mary Sues and black Gary Sues that are just bland and forgettable. That's why so many black and female characters of the '80s cinema worked so well: because writers didn't have all those "thou shalt not..." notes glued to their screens.

The problem to me is that this feels like the Disney moment for Ubisoft. The main protagonist for every single AC game before Shadows was always a native character from their respective game lore. Now for some reason they find an "accurate representation for a black samurai in Japan" and suddenly is the way they go with the main protagonist. The AC issue isn't really about Yasuke being black or about being 100% historically accurate. It's about keeping AC in that sweet spot where it recontextualizes some historical events into its fiction, but doesn't change who the people involved in those events were/what their role in them was. And by claiming that Yasuke - a pretty obscure historical figure who only spent one year in Japan - was 100% a badass black samurai, when he was practically just Nobunaga's sword-bearer for a while takes it waaay out of that sweet spot. TBH, the fact they're calling the female protagonist a shinobi, when she should be called a kunoichi rubs me just as badly. Yes, both are types of ninja, but one group was exclusively male and utilized specific tactics, while the other was exclusively female and used different tactics and techniques to accomplish their missions.
