This is a fantastic capability. Maybe less interesting to viewers than straight-up combat, but why not make it a requirement for blue and red teams to map the battlefield using this ELINT rather than presenting the same “here are the targets, here is where all the ADA is” briefing? Basically you get to fly one mission apiece, plot it all out, then fly with a likely incomplete and different picture of the battlefield by opposing sides? That could be day one of a campaign.

Absolutely, I feel like the surveillance and monitoring capabilities of the more modern aircraft are not used as they should be either in typical campaign building. However for trigger reasons I can see why it would be hard to leave objectives vague

Su-25T was a prototype series of 4 modified to carry Vikhr ATGMs. As far as I know it didn't carry FANTASMAGORIA ELINT pod, which was made for Su-24M. I think the symbology would be correct, but not sure. As an addition, great to see someone fly the Viggen like it would be flown in a war, stupid low and horrifiyngly fast.

If you need the altimeter to know how high you are and you're not at 100%+ thrust, you're flying it wrong, and also you might die ahaha such a fun aircraft

Nice video Cap 'n co! One thing that I wondered about though is why you guys pulled back feet wet (to sea) when you were being engaged by the SAM? It makes sense to want to move away from the SAM site, especially since the reflective water surface will fuddle with radar, but once you were being engaged by the SAM site why did you not change direction to be overland and use the ground as cover from the radar / missiles? A helpful tidbit (though you may already be aware of this) is that it is relatively simple to defeat any incoming missiles by making them pull into the ground: missiles do not track and follow you (like the antiquated movie trope), but instead guesstimate where you are going to be and try to meet you at that position. If you go low the missile runs chance of going into a nearby hill, but even on flat ground you can use the terrain to defeat the missile. To do this you go as low as possible, pull up slightly to get some altitude (100 feet is more then plenty) and immediately dive back down to ''scraping the grass'' low. What this does is that the missiles adjusts its course when you are going up, and it then has to compensate even more when you are diving down: the missile will thus drive itself into the ground trying to (over)correct the predicted position of your aircraft and you should be good!

I noticed you all emptied your dispenser pods during the first evasive action at 16:53 you can see the right hand indicator panel lighting up with some yellow warnings. "KB-V Slut" = KB dispenser on the left side is empty "FACKL SL" = Flares empty "MOTVERK" = Means either the ECM pod is active or the Dispenser is active when cap turns the ECM pod off at 16:54 you see the light go out and immediately he get's a radar lock warning !

Two things to add The viggen's ecm pod can only actively emitting radiation in the front, its like a cone with a +-60 degree azimuth and +-45 degree elevation. So when you are running away from sam sites, it is useless to turn on the active mode(dial to B) because there is no emitter at the back of the pod. This information is on the manual page 125. Also that sam site assumption rectangle can be seen on the kneeboard map. So you dont need to quit the game and struggle with those coordinations. You can just see these rectangles on the kneeboard map. Sorry, the second thing needs a mod to become true, the further discussion can be found in the "2018 kickoff Development changelog" thread in the ed forum. Btw the dispenser pod is pretty interesting, it is said that the original design contains a ecm emitter in the front part of the pod, makes it an integreted countermeasure pod, something like the ecm pod on mig21, later they found the space is not enough so they simply abandoned this design.

I think i would use mode A for the dispenser and move the release switch to "kont" or "int" this means i have selected automatic chaff dispensing and enabled it. if you see an IR missile you have to manually press the quick release button which overrides everything ! The automatic mode normally releases chaff in mode 2 if it's needed but if a CW radar locks on it switches to mode 1 ! Mode 1 empties the pod in 1.5 minutes Mode 2 in 3.5 minutes Mode 3 in 8 minutes Mode 4 also in 8 minutes but if you carry two pods this is the only mode that empties one pod first and then switches to the other so you get a possible total of 16 minutes.

What you are doing when getting multiple ELINT pod “looks” at your threat radar is getting multiple “cuts” or “lines of bearing” (LOBs). Same terms for sigint collection related to emissions or voice intercept.

The Viggen is a mix of old and new. You have to remember that the AJS-37 Viggen entered service in 1991 and the JAS 39A Gripen entered service in 1993. So when it comes to a lot of questions about "well why didn't they put that in" it's because they had a 4th+ Gen swing role aircraft coming off the production line at the same time. The AJS version only came into existence because the Gripen was delayed and the BK90 and RBS15F where being delivered but there where no aircraft to carry them. At this time Sweden also had dedicated jammer aircraft in the form of the J32E Lansen (dont' make to much of the J the four Aden's had been removed in the conversion to ECM) they carried a shitload of jammers.

It's so crazy how cryptic the Viggen is. There's a switch or dial for every obsqure setting you could possibly want. Almost the same era of development, two completley differnent ways of deploying the jet, and it's weapons. I love this Viggen, but my god. That's a huge workload for a real pilot. Whos ready for the F/A-18C and its oh-so-simple MFDs???

Actually the CK37 takes workloads of the pilot. Before Viggen strike fighters needed a two man crew. With the help of the autopilot its very easy for the pilot to twist the knobs during the flight. One knob for nav/attack, one for weapons and one for the settings of the weapon.

The Su-25T is a very rare variant of the Su-25 that was upgraded for demo purposes. Only 2 or 3 were actually produced. However, apparently the Russians had a similar program to the americans A-10 update program and the Su-25M that resulted is apparently quite similar to the Su-25T variant... I am far from an aircraft historian so I may have some of that wrong but thats what I remember

There is an error in the video the KB dispenser modes (A-1-2-3-4) only affect the chaff not the flares and this setting is then activated when the release switch is set to KONT or INT. The release switch is not the same as the "Fast countermeasure dispense" as it always uses Mode 2 and also releases flares.

F111 bombload, 14 tonnes or so. What you need for this mission is an EF 111 Raven, techno, techno, techno... I think that the EF111 was the only ECM C/W platform that had both standoff and penetration role. Oddly until very late in its service late it had no offensive weaponry though.

There is only few su-25t´s ever built according to wikipedia. It is pretty much prototype of georgian factory, but I really cant get my head around how that has been (so much criss cross info). Factory in georgia or something like that, built few prototypes of 25-t´s. Actually the number of su-25 variants is pretty silly even. Su-25t should really be called Scorpion, not frogfoot. said my friend. Is it true?

So dont really know why and how that has been chosen to dcs. Maby just normal Russian "we have wpns this an that if we just build em!" mambojambo after cold war? :) No offence to su-25t or to dcs, it s GREAT plane for training and first plane in dcs, as it covers pretty much every corner of ag stuff, and makes you practice with systems that are in other / later played planes also and helos, in form or another :) I flew about 500hours with su-25t before buying my first module. Now trialing viggen for second time, and got even campaing played. YARR!

Your formation flying is terrible. Your wings should be on the same plane as the lead's. You're too far back as well. You also need to adjust your roll trim. You were constantly holding a right bank just to stay in position.
