The version I have needs a computer to be used. But they have another version called "MPK Mini Play Mk3" which can be battery-powered. It has a speaker, including a 1/8th headphone output jack, and over a 100 internal drum and instrument sounds ready to be used straight out of the box. For me Akai is better because of its portability. The Akai is a bit smaller making it easier to carry around.
