I love your videos. They are so helpful and easy to understand. We have our BN and are going to go for CD in September. I’m also taking an Open/Utility group class so that’s ahead of myself. We fell behind because I got my dog and two weeks later COVID shut everything down. He’s my Novice A dog. Anyway, your videos helped me to look ahead to know what I’m training for in the future. :)

I took my miniature poodle to obedience classes for a year 2-3 times a week. I entered beginner novice trial finally. We did not pass and the AKC judge told me my dog was “awful” , “untrainable “ and to not come back ever for AKC trials again. Soheartbreaking! He’s just 18 months old

Thank you, quick question..So the long down is only 1 min. Now? You don't need to walk to the other side of the ring anymore?

Do you have to start your dog in beginner novice and work your way up through the ranks? Or can you start at a higher level if your dog can pass the more stringent routine? Thank you for the informative videos!
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland 5 ай бұрын
You can start with either Beginner Novice or Novice. To qualify to compete at the Open level, a dog must have a Novice title - CD. A dog must have an Open title - CDX - to qualify to compete in the Utility class.

@@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland ok that makes sense! Any benefit in skipping beginner novice? As I understand, it takes 3 passing scores in novice to earn the CD title.
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland 5 ай бұрын
@@joeray5394 most of us have been competing for so long we competed when we didn’t have the option for Beginner Novice. You can easily skip it if both you and your dog have the confidence to go straight to Novice. I entered my male Doberman in Beginner Novice when he was only 6 months old. We qualified easily. Novice would have been too stressful for him at that age.

So I do IGP, However for something different for us I thought about AKC OB. Is it ok for no hand signals, and for German to be used or any langauge for that matter.

Depending on the exercise, you can give verbal or hand signals, or verbal and/or hand signals. It doesn’t matter what words or what language you use.

Hi! I am interested in getting a new pup this summer. I am interested in doing some obedience competition with him or her eventually as something for the dog and I to do together. I am a complete novice to this. How can I get started? Should I connect with am AKC club in my area? I am thinking of getting a Border Collie or an English Springer Spaniel. Are those good breeds for obedience?
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on getting a new puppy!!! Both breeds excel in obedience. However, the springer may be a bit more challenging because it’s a hunting breed. You definitely need to find a trainer who knows how to work past the distractions and local club is a good place to start. I have videos that are very good for getting started in competition. When you get your puppy let me know and I can let you know which videos in which order to watch. You don’t need to stick to just one discipline. A local springer owner competes in agility, rally, and scent work. Border collies routinely compete in more than one discipline.

If a dog breaks the group sit or down and and happens to disrupt other dogs as well, do they start the test over or is every dog that breaks penalized?
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland 5 ай бұрын
If the dog breaks the group sit or down, the judge instructs the handler to real the dog in and have them quietly wait at their side. If it happened during the sit, the dog is excused from the down. All dogs being on leash should keep the dog that breaks from getting too close to other dogs.

This is wonderful but the sitting without prompting at a halt during heeling exercises drives me insane. How is a dog supposed to switch between rally and obedience rings when you don't auto sit at a heel in rally and you only SOMETIMES do with obedience (and of course, who knows when you'll be first in either ring at trials these days)? It's why I spend so much on rally vs obedience. The lack of ability to communicate to your dog in obedience makes me feel like it's designed for us to lose and I have no idea how to find a work around quite yet.
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland Жыл бұрын
I understand what you’re saying. But competitive people teach their dog that halt means “sit.” So when the judge says halt in obedience, the dog knows what to do. Also, when coming to a complete halt, my posture changes slightly (shoulders pull back) so again the dog is cued. When the dog does not sit in obedience, as in the stand during the signal exercises, the judge says “stand your dog” and the handler gives the stand signal prior to coming to a complete halt, so again, the dog knows what to do prior to making the wrong decision. Also, with the hand signal slightly forward where the dog can see, the shoulders are also more forward so again it’s a completely different posture for stand vs sit. Dogs cue into body posture and hand signal much more stronger than verbal cue, that’s why I use hand signals for the Drop on Recall in Open.

I took my miniature poodle for obedience classes for a year, entered him in beginner novice trial and he failed miserably. The judge told me he was untrainable and to not come back again. She told me the best he could ever do is complete a 6 week beginner class. So discouraging!!!
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland
@BaebeasDogTrainingPortland 6 ай бұрын
The judge should be ashamed for being so mean! My guess is if you went to class for a year, but failed miserably, your trainer might understand how to train behavior, but does not know how to train attention in new surroundings. Miniature poodles are one of the most brilliant breeds in the world and very biddable. Hopefully there are better trainers in your area. If not, email me with a description of how your dog behaved and I’ll send you a list of videos that will help fix the issues. Feathersandfur2000@yahoo.com
