The fact that there was only one wreck is a miracle. So many drivers with no situational awareness. It is mind boggling. Some on the right are going extremely fast(yes i know it's sped up) and just asking for a wreck.

This is literally a once in a life time thing for people down there, I live in north Alabama and it's once ever 5-10 years to even see snow / ice. Reason why we close down even at a chance of ice or snow.

As a retired truck driver I can tell you there were two types of vehicles that you watched out for one was four wheelers towing anything and rental moving trucks. The drivers were inexperienced and didn’t know how to handle the vehicle.

I live there and folks do not care. Many have no insurance either. Montgomery is the armpit of Alabama now. Lived there 50 years and it is a shell of what it once was. Let's just say that the reason is mostly (95% +) due to the change in leadership from one political party to the other. Under the old regime, things were good. New regime has failed miserably. You can research who was in charge a decade or two ago vs today. That's ll you need to know.

As a Southerner that has experienced 21 inches of snow in my lifetime and occasional on and off ice storms. I can honestly say it taught me a life lesson from what the Yankees go through. I want to thank them for helping some of us in that department. Because at the end of the day we’re all Americans. 🇺🇸😂👍💯

I was born in the Mohawk valley in upstate NY.when I was young I remember snow piled up on the side of the road 10ft tall. Its kinda crazy but I live 35 0:45 miles south of this overpass in Greenville Alabama. This overpass is at I65 south and Fairview avenue going south out of Montgomery.A very tricky HWY.

One thing a lot of northerners don't realize (and I am one from Maine) is that with the generally warmer ground temps down south, they'll get an icier layer on the ground while up here it may remain as only snow on the pavement.

Many Southerners don't have a lot of practice driving on icy roads but as this is gonna happen more and more often you need to get used to it. 1. Slow the F down! 2. Keep your distance from other vehicles to give you more time to react. 3. Don't turn, brake or accelerate too quicky. 4. Stay the F home! Being a lifelong resident of the North East I consider myself a decent driver in winter weather. It's the other drivers I worry about, so I will stay home if I can. When I was still working and we had a snowstorm and the other employees would leave early I'd stay put knowing the roads would be clogged with everyone else going home early and they'd be in the way of the plow crews. By the time I headed home the roads would be mostly empty and in better shape. Oh, and front wheel drive helps a bunch.

Depends. The worst ice is around 32 degrees to drives on because you end up with a small layer of melted water on top. Once you get to maybe 15 degrees and below, that ice is pretty easy to drive on with winter tires. Snow varies a bit too, powdery snow vs wet snow. It all depends.

You really need to give yourself a lot more space in between vehicles in this kind of driving situation. Slow down, use brakes very gently and cautiously. Don’t try to make any sudden movements or abrupt turns. It just requires a much more cautious approach. And ICE is always unpredictable! You still have some traction in snow, but ice is a whole ‘nother subject. That’s why they always advise to stay home if possible, and give them time to try to clear and treat the roads. Hope everyone stays safe during this crazy weather!

I grew up driving in horrible winter conditions in northern Michigan and yes that includes the upper peninsula. As a matter of fact I got my driver's license test right before a blizzard started and finished it successfully in it. ...Okay that out of the way I have spent the better part of the last 25 years living in the south including Orlando Birmingham New Orleans areas etc. Everyone down here freaks out about any little tiny bit of snow and with good reason cuz they just aren't equipped to handle it however for some reason even in heavy ice storms they don't seem to think it's a problem and I will tell you that ice even lightly it's far worse. Up north we know after an ice storm or even lite glazing, to pretty much just stay home at least until the sun comes out and the temperature's rise. I currently live near Birmingham and there's a lot of hills and the fingers of the Appalachians here, it may be days even weeks after an ice storm for those areas on the shadow side of the Hills to become safe again. In the summer it might be different but in the winter there are places that are pretty much in shade most of the season. I've seen a lot of semis Valley in between hills on low speed back roads and get stuck. This video clearly shows a lot of people driving way outside what the conditions should allow. One of the few people that were driving appropriately was the person that actually jackknifed their trailer. He knew he was losing control and made a maneuver that minimized damage to his vehicle and trailer as well as potentially other drivers. It wasn't pretty but it worked. On the other hand you really shouldn't be towing a camper around in that weather so maybe I was too gracious with my praise.

As a lifelong resident of Michigan, this is painful to watch. That said, while we do have more people competent enough to handle winter driving in Michigan, we still have more people who aren’t able to handle it than people who are. So take comfort, Alabama, in the fact that even Michigan residents can’t handle snow and ice.

I like when they make truckers get off the road during this type of weather. I think they should at least force the local drivers in the state stay home since they're already at home.
