@@sydbailey1320 I've got both, I find the K12 Pro have more of an upper mid range lift and have a little more punch in the mid bass. On the K550 mkii the lower bass has more oomph but the upper mids sound a bit thin. Both have an AKG signature but they are also different beasts, I use the K712 Pro for every day listening and mix/monitoring, the K550 for chill out and sheer enjoyment.

I've auditioned these a few years ago, together with the K553. I think I liked the K553 a little bit better due to a warmer tonal quality. My small problem with AKG is that they sound somewhat colored, a little metallic even, especially on the mids. They are somewhat mid-centric, almost shouty on some songs. They are unique in that sense but I don't get the "naturalness" you hear from something like a Shure, Beyerdynamic, or even a Grado, brands that I'm quite familiar with, auditioning them in stores. I wouldn't as much as call them reference as I would the Beyerdynamic DT880. That could be a true reference, at least for me. With all the brands I mentioned, only Shure has detachable cables. It would've been great, end-game(ish) even for something like a DT880 to have detachable cables. Sound quality from those is phenomenal but their cables are just too long and heavy. P.S. I've been watching your reviews for a while now but just recently subscribed. I think you should be as popular as Zeos. Your reviews are among the most objective and informative, if not the most objective and informative out there, at least for headphones. Loving them, man. Keep rockin'!

I got the 553 MkII with the detachable mini xlr and I am very happy with them. No issues with seal. I do notice a sort of what I would call house sound perhaps, but nothing detrimental for me, especially because I got them at around 70$ open case! Hi buddy. I am looking for a pair of headphones around the 100 pound mark, for home use. The DT770 fit the bill and I can see you are a fan. But from what I understand on ear provides better sound than over ear, but I'd sooner take your word for it. Any reccomendations would be very helpful... I tend to listen to music with a lot of textures so something that would bring out those sounds that I wouldn't otherwise have heard would be wonderful. Been looking at your reviews, and whilst great, it's given me more options as opposed to narrowed them down! So thought I'd ask the man himself. Thanks!
@metal571
@metal571 8 жыл бұрын
+Nish Chadda yeah the dt770 is quite revealing. Get the 80 ohm version if you want plenty of bass but also good treble definition and an awesome soundstage. Your information is incorrect, over ear or around ear almost always gives a better result (larger drivers) than on ear.

I have auditioned a K550 (probably was one of the earliest versions). Simply put, I would say that it sounds like a closed back version of the DT880's. I would definitely say that the subbass is emphasized more than the mid and upper bass. As a result it sounded like it kind of lacked impact. But the bass is extremely clean and tight. The lower mids were weak and kind of lacked weight. But thats about where the cons end. Its a fantastic headphones to be honest. Great clarity and detail. Clean treble. (albeit a bit etched).
@metal571
@metal571 9 жыл бұрын
DarKoNeQ8 Yeah the etching in the upper mids right around 5k or so got annoying after a while. I wouldn't say they sound like a DT880 - more like an HD 600 that's been closed and is less refined, perhaps slightly more lumpy in response. The sibilance region around 6k is not boosted like in the Beyer, though you may have heard an earlier unit. The newest ones do not possess the sibilant treble the old ones did, from what I've read.
@BodhiGeraci
@BodhiGeraci 9 жыл бұрын
metal571 So the newest k550 won't fatigue my ears? I can't stand 7-9k frequency range hurts my ears a lot... for a trance producer, who listens to blues jazz rock drum and bass and obviously trance, would you recommend me the kns8400, k550 or k271 II?
@metal571
@metal571 9 жыл бұрын
Bodhi Geraci The K550 is perfect for trance. You want to be careful with using it for rock and especially metal though as guitars can become a bit abrasive in the upper mids. The sibilance region from around 6-10k is nothing like a Beyer thankfully. It's highly detailed but not shrill.

Thanks for such a fast response as I value your opinion. They're more for recording / location sound as already have some open-backs for mixing. Seems a bit confusing with K550 MKII in Europe and K553 in North America, but from what I can gather they're the same thing in all but name...? These would appear quite sensitive and low-impedence which is definitely another pro when potentially using with devices with less-than stellar headphone amps.
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
TheNorliss Yeah all the same headphone, those models. Also, the only drawback using these as a monitor is that they don't have as much isolation as some cans. So you might want to go with a 440 or 840 instead if that's your priority.

@@metal571 Sounds good. Been looking at cheaper options for headphones that I don't mind bashing up and needing to throw on a moment's notice for things like voice calls and the like (my HD650 and so on are reserved for calmer, proper music sessions as I baby those things). Trying out the M40x at the moment but not feeling it (similar to your review of them I guess), was thinking of moving up the HD 599SE as I'm noticing comfort is definitely one of the most important factors when using a headphone for background listening or calls for extended periods. I had the 595 last decade and remember them fondly, so was kinda hoping to relive those with the 599 as well. Would you call them a true successor to that headphone? Of course, I got curious about the AKGs as if I do go for the 559 I would then still lack a decent closed back for that different more intimate experience.

I immediately noticed something was seriously wrong when putting them on, and initially thought it was extreme channel imbalance. Although after testing it turned out one of the drivers was wired backwards, out of phase. I wonder if that's what Wheezy was hearing on one of his pairs when he assumed it was channel imbalance? I've seen a few other posts about it as well, and this makes me think there's a bunch of out of phase k371s out there. Regardless, I was able to resolder one of the drivers and it sounds quite nice now - especially nice for $68. Ive had a DT770 for a while now. Can no longer take it's sibilance and lack of midrange. How is the congestion on this compared to the dt770s? I know the soundstage on these just cant be incredible but I dont expect it to be bad either. Every time I get the dt770s to the volume I want, which is moderate btw, I cringe at the congestion and the sibilance. I like a crisp midrange. I know that now. So im looking at getting K550s. Do you think my reasoning is sound? Or is there another pair of phones I completely missed considering? Thanks!
@metal571
@metal571 9 жыл бұрын
Norman Zealand Malana I wouldn't say crisp for these, they're detailed in the treble and don't possess the 6k spike that makes the DT770 sibilant (I assume you have either the 32 or 250 ohm version, as the 80 doesn't sound sibilant at all) but the upper midrange has a ringing issue that can get worse quickly with volume, especially if you listen to music with electric guitar. The K271 has a much smoother midrange than this. I'm reviewing that again soon.
@NormanZealandMalana
@NormanZealandMalana 9 жыл бұрын
metal571 I have the 250 ohm version. I guess what I really want to know are two things, first, are these less congested than the 770s at the same volume level? And are the mids as forward as the bass and the treble? I do listen to a lot of electric guitar and female vocals so yeah, I don't like squinting my ears to even make out the details in the mids. Sorry if it's all too vague. Thanks!
@metal571

Norman Zealand Malana not vague. The mids and highs are a little forward on these. Definitely less bass than the 250. If you want something smooth and closed you should try something else.

metal571 I know I like the slight bump at 2khz. I found it makes string instruments sound more realistic. 4khz doesnt hurt when I push them up a bit too. It's the 6k-10k range on these dt770s that kill my ears. Don't get me wrong, I want very detailed mids, I'm just worried these would have the same kind of sibilance. Could you at least tell me if they do or dont? Sorry for being a bother, good info is just so hard to find because all reviews have a subjective angle and sometimes they outright contradict each other. I already have the cash, I'm just waiting to choose my target. TBH, I feel the K612 is the kind of sound I want, but it's open, and I walk around and commute a lot. Thanks again!
@metal571
@metal571 9 жыл бұрын
Norman Zealand Malana Oh, sibilance, no. Nothing like Beyer treble. That I'll say. Just be aware that there's some issues with the upper midrange and if you crank it, you'll hear glare and an indistinct shrill sound in that region. But it's not particularly bad. It's different, Beyers are fast cans but have spikes in the sibilance region of the treble. This AKG in particular has a decay issue at around 5k. It also doesn't have the 2.5k bump you're talking about that the 612 and 701, etc. have. It's a different signature. The K550 is closer to a less refined HD 600 with more energy at 10k+ than the signature of their open backs, which is quite different.
@DragonClawBG
@DragonClawBG 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure all AKG 55X sound basically the same (550, 550 MKII, 551, etc). I think the two biggest reasons why they are polarizing are the sealing difficulties and what a person was used to before these. I switched to these after a pair of Sony MDR-XB500 and I completely hated the 550's sound without EQing. And now after around 5 years I love them. Other reasons that may or may not have affected my change of heart are: hearing change, change in taste of music, having been used to overly bassy speakers too, buying an amp.
@metal571

Yeah the sealing issue was helped by the introduction of the K371 which clamps more and is more likely to seal, where these can definitely just refuse to seal at all for some people

1- The midrange on the HD600 on terms off vocals are a little "forward" like on the AKG K550? 2 - I love the AKG K550 and I want to change to a Open Headphone but it needs to be somehow like the AKG K550 but way better in terms off soundstage and detail. Is the HD600 way better? I just need a yes or no xD. 3 - What does your EQ in terms off sound? I never have EQ any off my headphones. I like it just the way is comes, he is good or not good. What do you think about it? Thanks
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
Christophe Soares 1. Yeah it is slightly forward but much less grainy. 2. Way better in detail but only slightly better in soundstage. 3. I increase the somewhat missing sub bass region, tame the high mids slightly, and add a bit more air above 10k. This is corrective EQ only really, just adjusting the sound slightly. Lately I've been unable to fully enjoy any headphone without EQ since nothing is perfect.

At my work place there is a lot of noise, and I drive a big fork lift that is noisy as well, could you reconmend a closed over ear headphone that would work with my iphone and one that would block sound from outside very well, that way I would only have to use over the ear headphones instead of in ear and over the ear protection. gryphongryph you won't be able to get open back sound in a closed headphone, with hearing protection levels of isolation. As isolation increases, sound quality tends to decrease. The worst thing (and the deal breaker) for me was the too light clamping force and ear pads that don't seal properly. The earpad opening is too small to fit the ears, and clamping is non-existent, which means it doesn't seal, and when it doesn't seal, it has no bass.

@@metal571 Have you tried the K275? The cups are just big enough to over my ears, and they have the firmer padding. Unfortunately that doesn't play well with the seal. I am planning to give my dad my K275. It would be his first decent headphone. I just hope his glasses play nice like yours. The 553 Mk 2 looks like it should be less of a problem, but I'm not entirely sure how they sound and if they are worth the upgrade. @@metal571 I was interested in the K371, but unfortunately it seems to be built like shit. My dad is pretty broke right now, so I want to get him something that won't break on him for a very long time. The K275 seems to be built very well, especially considering the price. It is my only closed set, so I have basically nothing to compare with. You said it was pretty bad though. If you don't mind, how would you compare the different aspects of the sound to other closed backs that are common review reference points? That way I can get a decent point of reference and go from there. I have the SHP9500 and the HE-4XX. Compared to both of those, it seems a bit harsh sometimes, less resolving, and a bit boomy. I figured those could be common closed traits, but I'm glad to hear that may not be the case.

@@phillipnunya6793 the K275? It doesn't compare to anything. Super dark, doesn't resolve detail, way too much upper bass. My K371 has been perfect, had it almost a year now. The build quality issues were early on. Buy new from somewhere you can return to. It's just not worth it when the 275 sounds so much worse. AKG sent me both

Hii, can any of you audiophiles help? Im on the look out for new headphones. I've previously used AKG K550 since 2012, but I broke them during an accident. I've been looking at these and Fidelio X2. Two very different headphones, but I've been able to find them for a good price. I was very content with my K550, but at times they sounded a little pitchy (the high treble can domiante a little) and I felt like the bass could've been slightly more focused. I also like headphones that can offer a big sound-picture. I don't like it when I feel like the sound is compressed into my ears - in this department the K550's sound soudned bigger than any other headphone Iæve owned so far. As the Fidelio's are open-back I suspect I would like their sound-picture and that they will work well with gaming as that open sound picture will perhaps make it easier to know exactly where the opponent players are. When taht's said I also travel by bus a lot and in those times I defiantely want to be isolated as much as possible. I tried some Bose quietcomfort 25 and I had never imagined noise cancelling would work that well. Having a pair of Bose during my every-day commuting on teh buss and in the university would actually make it possible to get some school-work done, but I don't think the sound wuality would blow me away. They sound ok, but I would never buy them for their sound alone. Not for that price.. I think the ATH-M50x would suit me better than Bose quietcomfort 25 (for a cheaper price) , but is there any reason to pick them over FIdelio X2? And will I have to spend money on a good DAC to get the best out of them? Please, feel free to suggest other headphones if any one comes in mind! I'm currently stuck with ear-plugs that followed with my phone.. I donæt know too much abotu headphones so pls don't eat me if Iæve made any mistakes..
@metal571
@metal571 8 жыл бұрын
+Aadibass X2 is open. That won't work for a portable. M50x is way way worse with soundstage, it has none. Bose sacrifices sound quality in general for the noise cancellation.
@Aadibass
@Aadibass 8 жыл бұрын
+metal571 Yess..that's the conclusion I came to.. They all have flaws and if a perfect headphone exist for me I suspect it would be way out of my price range. Do you have other headphones to suggest? I doubt I will find any that are good for portable use - so I might just buy the best headphones I can for home-use and then in some months buy some high-end earplugs or pick up some Bose 25's (if I have the money) for noise cancellation alone. If I can get good sound I can live with not beign able to use it outside of home or in a noisy environment, but bad soudn quality would be more difficult to accept I think.. Thank you so much for your reply! edit: another thing is that when I bought K550 they were the first somewhat expensive headphones. I couldæve bought any expensive headphone and be impressed, but now I have some experience from my K550 and the new headphones has to be significantly better. Or at least good enough for me to hear a difference.

metal571 Thank you so much! They will however get rather expensive (considering that I'll need a good amp too). I'll be on the look out. X2 can be picked up for 1800 (unused on the used market with a recepit). The Sennheiser's aren't to be found on the used market and new the cheapest website sell them for 2500. With a good amp/dac the total price will come to around 4.000... The Sennheiser HD700 can be picked up for 4500 right now.. The currency is nok if you were wondering. I think this set-up will be too expensive, I might be able to afford in teh summer but right now it seems like too much..
