Otomo : so good he makes you want to draw comics and quit comics simultaneously.

The french quotes : "besides, not only likes he the work of the Hernandez, but he also offers to publish it. Since then, Jaime & Gilbert have been sharing 32 pages every 2 mounths, loaded with energy and originality." I don't think it's related to Akira, just here for graphical purpose.

Hey Ed, as per your request for a translation for the French text (I'm a francophone from Montreal, Qc)... It seems to be an article title that has been truncated in the middle, so the words become non sequitur: ''Jaime Hernandez... lit up... hot chicks''. I'm guessing the full title describes his work and his general tropes... There's another bit in the yellow, hard to see, but I think I've got it down... '' So, not only does the Hernandez bros. work please him, he proposes he publish it: Ever since, Jaime & Gilbert share 32 bimonthly pages, filled with energy & originality''. There ya go...

Re those digital images and how they were made, Otomo may have had access to early digital scanners. The technology had been in development since the 60s and was affordable and in wide use by the 90s. He may have used a commercial imaging service, or tech from the research group of a technology company.

Greetings from Chile! I absolutely love this channel. Did you know that Alejandro Jodorowsky claims to be the one who gave the idea of the end of Akira to Otomo on a drunken night? I don't know if it's true, but it's what he says (you have to believe half of what Jodorowsky says).

I absolutely love Akira and Otomo's work. I really should check into this box set, as my collection is the OG translated Epic comics and a handful of the old Epic collections. Thanks for the walk through some of his art there, guys, it really is breathtaking.

The first digital drum scanner was developed in 1957, by the 80's it was possible that the larger Japanese publishers had access to the technology. It would have been a device worth over a hundred thousand dollars. It wouldn't have connected to a computer, and was mostly used for photographic reproduction. The prints would have been stupid expensive, but I imagine you could get some cool pixel effects by playing with the settings and then output the pixelated print. I'm only guessing here, but I've also been a certified commercial press operator since the early 90's.

Great episode guys! In the UK Akira club original printing in the late 90 early 00s was so hard it find and was always expensive so was so happy that they rereleased in HC 10 years ago. It’s such and amazing book… so glad OTomo had all that stuff to share. Enjoyed watching you guys go through this

Just for anyone curious, Akira Club is available for standalone purchase. It's not exclusive to the box set.

Just ordered the box set because of this, price was a bit hefty but this makes it clear the inclusion of the Akira club makes the extra price over buying the regular volumes worth it

A critical piece of info to know about is that Young Magazine was actually published Biweekly (on the second and fourth Mondays of a month for 24 issues in a publication year) until number 8 of 1989, when it switched to being a weekly publication. Fellow Seinen magazines like Young Animal and Big Comic/Big Comic Original currently follow this publishing schedule. Though it's not uncommon for weekly seinen mags (Young Jump, Morning, Big Comic Spirits, Young Magazine) to have series on frequent breaks.

I missed Akira Club when it first came out in English. About 10 years ago I found a copy in a comic shop in Spain (in Spanish, of course) and came this close to buying it and trying to translate it, but decided against it in the end for some reason. Got the Kodansha box set when it came out, and not gonna lie, getting an English copy of Akira Club was a big part of the motivation.

The way some of those images are pixelated, it reminds me of early digital desktop publishing days (early to mid '90s)... where a linked image would go missing and the 'preview' that was left of it would print that way. I think some of this AKIRA stuff predates that, so I could be off.
@unitus3 жыл бұрын
Now that I think about it, when I first got into graphic design (so around '93) large graphic files (nice, high res scans) were too big for a lot of people's computers, so you would often get a very pixelated preview image that the printer would then replace with a high resolution graphic. I wonder if some of those YOUNG magazines had production errors where the high-res graphic wasn't used.
@CartoonistKayfabe3 жыл бұрын
All the pixelated pieces we mention are from the earliest episodes in like 1984 or so.

Nice vid as usual, big white thumb ^^ As for the text in French, it's just a piece of a text, cut in half, with incomplete sentences. They all seem to come from the same source. I would say he just picked up some foreign language for the esthetic ^^

The french stuff at 14:23: It doesn't seem to mean anything. Not sure why Jaime Hernandez gets name dropped there. The sentence doesn't make sense. Feels like a Lorem Ipsum with "Jaime Hernandez", and "amazing chicks (nanas renversantes)", nothing else.

Look up his work pace at how fast he was to the amount of detail per page. It’s mind blowing.
