90s kids story: kept hearing about this movie, one day , a sunday, they aired it on tv but i only saw like the last act and i was blown away, spent the whole week asking around if any store has a copy or maybe taped it, no luck, days became weeks and months, nothing... one day, i was in a library, they had a small video tapes section and i was browsing, then i found a tape, a white plastic box with a cover that looked familiar , i held it in my hands like i found the holy grail, i could not believe my eyes, i had a vhs tape of akira in my hands , and it was for $9....i was shaking as i was paying for it. ran home, my brother was at the curb with the guys, i ran to him and showed him what i had, his eyes bulged out , i never seen him hold something as delicate as he did that day and told me ''we need to go home, now.....'' we watched that movie like 4 times that day, back to back..... it was a turning point for both of us. remember kids, in the early 90s, we had no dvds, no vcd, no internet , no streaming, no amazon , we had dumb luck and that day, it was a blessing from the heavens, we found a vhs copy of Akira... also it was a french dub with no subs, but me and my bro spoke fluent french and it was a nice dub.

Theres a really captivating dialogue "What if amoeba is given the power of a higher being like human , all it knows is to engulf and devour the food around it" . This really explains the point of the movie . In this case , Tetsuo(lower being) is given power of a god(higher being) . Tetsuo will only use those powers for humanly things like building and breaking things without realizing the true potential or meaning of this power.

I cannot agree, 'if an amoeba is given the power of a higher being like human' it would by definition have human intelligence but not be able to do anything with it.. unlike Tetsuo . @@Brendanrooney I think the OP means that if an amoeba is made stronger by an outside/higher power, it would only continue to devour its surroundings bc it's still an amoeba. I think an argument can be made that kanada does have a bit of character development throughout the film. * SPOILER ALERT* The way I see him is that he’s like an older brother to tetsuo, he always watches over him and treats him like a kid, and tetsuo doesn’t like being treated that way. Tetsuo wants to have power because all his life he never had any and was tired of kanada coming in to save him every time. When he finally gets power he abuses it and when kanada sees the havoc tetsuo unleashes he realizes he has to be the one to put him down. at the end where kanada is going through tetsuo memories the music is like a funerary hymn to tetsuo And the iconic scene where kanada is on his knees grabbing the shrinking orb of light, calling out tetsuos name. He’s gonna miss tetsuo, tetsuo was like a little bro to him. To me that’s what I see and that’s why I find it tragic and awesome at the same time.
@MicahBuzanANIMATION3 жыл бұрын
100% agree. It was only when Kaneda enter's Tetsuo's memories does he understand Tetsuo's perspective. Kaneda saved Tetsuo's broken toy from the bullies, but Tetsuo had an inferiority complex and always felt weak underneath Kaneda, and that resentment grew without Kaneda realizing it.
@ProgrammedForDamage3 жыл бұрын
Well said! I too was touched by the scene of Kaneda capturing the orb of light; Tetsuo's remaining essence. He glows for a spit second as he sorrowfully says Tetsuo's name. The characters are deliberately written as shitty human beings. This is a common theme we see a lot in Japanese cinema and anime films: the loss of traditional Japanese culture and identity. Neo-Tokyo's post-atomic form represents the Americanized rebuilding of Japan post-WW2 and post-feudalism. In the manga they nail this home pretty hard; the US Navy occupies the entirety of the coastline of Neo-Tokyo. They are written as unlikable and selfish characters as a criticism of America's glorification of social individualism, which Japanese traditionalists see as affront to their inherently collectivist culture, which they accredit to their people's remarkable achievements and historical progress. In Akira, everyone in Neo-Tokyo is looking out for themselves. The character arc of Tetsuo himself can be loosely described as a tainted youth stripping himself of his selfish desires to become more in line with what the espers aspire to be: Akira, who is essentially a Christ-like figure - a being of pure energy.
@Luxius15093 жыл бұрын

@IcoKirov3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that he meant the characters are not good as in kindness, but more that they were not good as in build well from storytelling standpoint. I'm no expert on the movie, I have seen it just once ( I know I need to watch it more to understand it better) some time ago, but I also have this opinion. The movie is great from spectacle standpoint, from exploring ideas standpoint, observing a mob or a nation mentality and so on, but the characters on an individual level were kind of boring. Not because they were not kind, but because they were not that interesting. As an example I will give The First Law trilogy that I recently read. In there there is not a single character that you can tell is a decent human being. All of them are either beaten up by life to the point they are just broken and that's why they are bad, or they are outright bad because of egoism or something. Yet all of them are interesting and compelling. You kind of care for most of them even. So you don't need a kind character for him/her to be interesting and compelling.
@mdjubaer27453 жыл бұрын
@@IcoKirov actually the " not built up " thing is very intentional. the philosophy that otomo wrote akira with was that the universe is deterministic and each humans story is a stream that mixes with the great stream of life itself. the absence of a main character was also intentional as not having one supports the kinda narrative otomo was going for. basically the story is the stream of life and every character played their respective role to keep its flow going to the direction it was destined to go. its a shame that the idea couldn't be explored enough in the film, however he discusses about it much more explicitly in the manga,
@IcoKirov3 жыл бұрын
@@mdjubaer2745 ok, but i'm not sure if those things necessary contradict having an interesting characters... you don't need a character to be a main character for him/her to be interesting. nor anything else you mentioned really. maybe it was better in the mange for that aspect as well. i will probably give it a read at some point. or maybe it was intentional to have an "uninteresting" character as well. what i mean is the characters in the film are kind of bland. but maybe he wanted them to be bland and with what you said i guess i can see why he would want that. if that is the case, then he succeeded, but that would still be a con for a lot of people even if they understand it. i like having interesting characters in the stories i read or watch, and having them here would have made me more invested in the "stream of life" that is unfolding.

I read the manga. When you watch the movie, it almost feels like they adapted the first 2/3 of the manga and then suddenly decided to wrap things up quickly, because the film was getting too long. The manga gets more into the social issues that Chris mentions and even takes a shot at out-of-touch American Intellectuals. At several points it seems to make the argument that democracy itself simply doesn't work. On the other hand, the manga does drag a bit towards the end. I think the film ended a little too soon and the Manga ended a little too late. Neither one quite found the right place to quit. (Both still very good though.)

Akira's story suffers a little, because it is a movie adaptation of a series of manga. They basically took the first third of the manga's story arch, cut out a lot of the character development and then created a new and very explosive ending, because all up until the finale was just the set up for a grander narrative. From what I understand, they are planning on releasing new series adaptation of this story, which will adapt the entire series.
@tonk823 жыл бұрын
That's not exactly true... Both are written by Otomo (and the manga drawn), and at the time the movie production started the manga had only 3/4 volumes and was unfinished. Otomo had complete creative control and decided to do an alternate version to siut 2 hours... he said that he decided the ending of the manga in 1990, two years after the movie. Strictly speaking, he came up with the movie ending way before the manga one.

Akira is one of my favorite anime movies ever, I used to watch this movie constantly when I was younger. I got exposed to it when I was around 14 or 15, it was one of the first anime Blu-ray’s I ever bought. Once I watched it for the first time, I was blown away by it. I had known anime existed by watching reruns Yugioh, dbz kai, beyblade metal fusion and stuff but I had never seen anything like Akira. I watched Akira so many times I can pretty much imagine the entire movie in my head, but I didn’t read the Manga until a couple of months ago. The Manga is a whole different beast entirely, i dare say it’s even better than the movie! But the movie will always hold a special place in my heart and I always get nostalgic watching it

@Brazilian Goddess The dialogue, music, characters and cinematography are all top tier. They can be a bit long and you really need to pay attention to what's being said and shown on the screen, or you may end up being lost, so there's that. They're movies you've gotta see two or three times to really grasp what's going on. I thought the same way as you did originally, but after seeing the first one, I loved it. The third and final movie is kind of the black sheep of the trilogy. It's a mixed bag, but I still found enjoyment in it. Overall, definitely give the first two a couple watches and if you really liked them like I did, then watch the third one.

The comic is a whopping 12,000 pages and goes into great depth of each character but I think the film does enough for you to create a bond with all of them. On top of that, the music. Some key points worth noting: 1) The artist/creator/director, Katsuhiro Otomo, wrote the manga before the movie was made but there was no actual ending to the manga until after the movie released. So the ending of the anime was roughly put together and very vague since his own source material was still being developed. 2) Every minor character in the anime has entire story arcs and substantial roles in the manga’s general plot. 3) It is heavily recommended to read the manga at any point to understand the true story of Akira. As it provides the backgrounds of virtually every character and explains what happened after the credits roll in the anime. Some story elements in the manga are different than the anime. So the story isn’t identical but close. 4) The story of Akira is heavily inspired by another manga written by Otomo, which is titled, “Domu”, that also tells the story of a child with supernatural psychic powers.
@ericclassic22093 жыл бұрын
I could go on and on about the movie. I’ve watched it 1000’s of times. It is one of my top 3 movies of all-time.

One last thing. Akira has a lot to do with teens doing lots and lots of drugs. Manga spotlights the reality of that lifestyle, whilst the anime doesn’t incorporate it as much, so as to not give the impression of glorifying it and making international audiences uncomfortable.
@yashsolanki5893 жыл бұрын
The reason a lot of movie doesn't make sense or the characters are bland is because the manga was still publishing when the movie was made. So Otomo had the first volume and the a vague idea of the final volume out of six total volumes. So in a way, he just had to connect them in any way possible due to demands of the producers. The problems he faced in the writing the movie would help him improve on the manga.
@givemorexp3 жыл бұрын
True, overall after being a massive fan of the movie and finally reading manga years later, I can say that movie is cut out of so much content and just feels rushed at some parts regarding the plot and character actions. Maybe it being a bit longer and having more character development would've helped. It is still a masterpiece which never gets old, but to anyone who wants to get full AKIRA experience - manga is a MUST.
