Thinking of awesome animation, have you seen "The Secret of Kells" (2009, Tomm Moore)? The art is somewhat based on the illuminated manuscript after which it's named, there are a lot of gorgeous little details in the animation that shouldn't be missed. Another great animated film is "The Thief and the Cobbler" (also known as "The Princess and the Cobbler", released in 1993). It was a 28-year labor of love for animator Richard Williams, and remains one of my personal favorites to this day.

The thing about akira is it's a learning experience. The more you watch it the more you learn about the story and the characters. You can't just sit down and really figure it all out in one sitting due to actual subtleties (example is the relationship between kaneda and tutsuo).

Speaking of Tetsuos, have you seen "Tetsuo: The Iron Man?" It plays like the frenetic lovechild of Lynch and Cronenberg, satirizing the industrialization of Japan with body horror, surreal cinematography and all the fury of a coked-up pitbull.

I am glad to see that you both enjoyed this film as it is one of my favourites and was also one of the first anime films I ever saw, though I think you should have watched the original dub as it (in my opinion) is far better. Though you didn't mention it the film has a different ending to the manga as the author was still writing it at the time he made the film, also the film is set just before the Tokyo Olympics and in a strange turn of events in real life the Olympics will be held in Tokyo in 2020 just as it would have in the movie and thus it has spawn a bunch of silly internet rumours that tokyo will be destroyed not long before it happens much like in the movie

Have you guy's seen The Good The Bad and The Weird? It's a Korean Action-Adventure with a hint of that dark Korean comedy. It is a very underrated movie that I watched on Netflix with my brother that started out as a joke (Expecting it to be bad) and we were both very surprised at how entertaining and exciting this movie was, especially the action scenes. An honorable homage to the great Sergio Leone.

I'd like to recommend another animated feature, called Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The way Matt kept on mentioning how over-the-top anime is made me think of this movie in particular, because of the subtlety of its characters' emotions and its bleak, simplistic story.

I am not sure if the guys are aware how relevant Akira is to the batman franchise, but the storyboard artist for akira, Hiroyuki Aoyama, was hired to work on some parts for Batman Beyond. I saw this movie in theatre when i was a kid when it was released in france, it was mind blowing, the animation was top notch, especially the first bikes chase against the clown, and this soundtrack with a lot of percutions, plus the movie doesnt spoil the end of the manga. i got the feeling the live hollywood adaptation will be absolute crap.
