I have owned 2 Akitas (at different times)both female. To this day they still hold a special place in my heart. My first Akita loved and kept an eye on my daughter. She was very intelligent and very aware of her surroundings. My daughter would lay down with my Akita and many times would fall asleep on the dog, that dog would not move until my daughter woke up. My first Akita lived until she was 11. My second Akita was very similar in behavior, she grew up with my youngest daughter who was 2, a Poodle and Bichon (I have always preferred female dogs) plus we had 2 Cats. She loved "her" cats. All 5 would sleep together during the day. I have always been told you should never have an Akita with children or other pets. I believe that it all depends on the Human! Strong leadership and teaching boundaries is the most important factor. My second Akita lived until she was 14. At the present time I have a 10 yo Chiuhauha, a 6 yo GSD, a 5 yo Pitbull and a 18 yo Poodle.

My akita is a very protective of his family, a pitbull came out of nowhere barking towards me during a walk, and he push me out of the way and just gave a very strong growl the pitbull ran away. And my akita calmly look at me and continue walking.I know now he will give his life for us. I just thought he was spoil and he would never protect us but as of now last night. I know now he will give his life for us. So, I will be spoiling him more often.

Bro it’s crazy how that INSTINCT comes out no matter what personality these dogs have. My guy is seven months and he’s a real homebody hahah like a lazy cat he cleans himself all day and talks back like a husky hahahah. He acts like a pussy around me sometimes because I’m the alpha in the house, also he runs and hides when company comes over, so we kind of thought he was a scaredy-cat lol. NOPE! We where on a walk, and this other dog runs up on us at the fence. My dog just transformed. His body got super altense and alert and he got very calm, like scary calm lmao. He let out a very loud, very low bark in the lab or whatever it was face and that dog shut tf up real quick hahahahhaah. He’s insanely smart too. He is amazing so far with my children. My wife is his favorite person tho. He love us all but in a way he fears/respects me while at the same time I feel he loves/respect my wife . Nomm ju Come up in here if you want to😅🤞💯

My wife and I bought a three month old Akita puppy for our first daughter's 1st birthday. I traveled about six months out of the year and wanted a stout guard dog to protect my wife and child while I was away on business He (Poncho) was brilliant from the beginning. Our 1 year old would jump on his back, pull his ears, and snuggle into him from the get go. He was tolerant and loving and seemed to understand that she was his prime purpose to protect. When we took our daughter to the park, he placed himself between her and any stranger ever. And when we had her sister six months after he came to our home he knew that she fell under his remit as well. That dog was the best dog we ever owned. Regal and aloof like a royal cat, but loyal and amazing as a family member

I Trust them to be American Akitas 365/24/7 which means - train the kids and the other pets to treat the American Akitas accordingly. Treat these dogs with appropriate respect and never let children treat these dogs like bean bag chairs or ball pits. They love kids but kids should be at least 5 or 6 for best results.

My Akita doesn't like children. Turns out they like to tease him through the fence. We have asked these kids to stop doing this but they don't. Thus, when kids are in our home they have to sit down and ignore the dog for a bit. Let the dog visit you. Once he is ok with the kid being in the house, he is fine. NO KIDS and NO OTHERS are allowed to "rough house" with him either. If the dog wants to play with you, he has toys. Throw his toy and he is happy.

The akitas appearance changed after WW2 when the emperor allowed commoners to raise them so they would not go extinct. Emperor Taishos dogs looked very much like American Akitas even in color. Todays Akita Inu from Japan looks very different from its original form which was bred by the samurai class.

Not being rude at all so don't take it like this please, but it seems the Akita doesn't fully trust not only your parents but you as well. It's rough when they're already like that at such a young age. I recommend trying a local trainer, or research dominant/aggressive behavior in Akitas and try working her in short training exercises.

I have been having difficulty obtaining a puppy in my area, nobody breeding dogs I would like to have. However, I found a breeder within driving distance that has Akita’s. I am not “Macho Man” so let’s get that out of the conversation right away. I have owned three Boxers and two American Staffordshire Terriers so I am not unfamiliar with willful head strong dogs. I personally like these types of dogs because I have found them to be very engaged with me and I with them. They have all been intelligent loving dogs with very distinct personalities except for one Boxer that had a prey drive that was off the chart. With that one exception they all have been very good with other dogs and people. The one exception was a Boxer that would kill any small animal unlucky enough to cross it’s path including the neighbors and our own cat. Presently I have a cat, one very mellow American Staffordshire Terrier and a bunch of chickens, the chickens are free range I use for bug control and I just like them. My American Staffordshire Terrier and I lost our other Am Staff to lymphoma last fall and we both miss him very much. Both dogs got along great together even though they were a bit rough but never really fighting. When they would get excited they would run together snarling and growling as they bashed into each other. All I would need to say was “Stop fighting!” and the activity would stop immediately. They would eat from the same food bowl peacefully with no aggression at all and when that was gone would move to the next bowl if they were still hungry. The cat would share their water bucket and they never bothered him, the cat was raised from a kitten with these two. The Am Staff I still have and the cat play together and sleep together. My concern is bringing an Akita puppy home might ruin our happy peaceful home? I know about socializing puppies and did that with all of my dogs. Everywhere I went the dogs went too and I encouraged people to pet them and say Howdy, everybody loves puppies. Even as they got older I would do the same and they all turned out to be very friendly good natured boys and girls. The one Boxer exception was ruined before he came to me unfortunately. I look at Akita dogs and think what a beautiful animal. I gave it a time out on an Akita last winter because I was worried regarding the reputation they carry. The Am Staffs have a very similar reputation but what I have found is they are sweet loving dogs that need a stable loving owner that acts as a control rod just like in a nuclear reactor. If things get a a little too warm the control rods are inserted to calm things down. This is what I was for my dogs, aways in control, patient and most of all kind like a good father. I don’t know any other way to describe it. I know these are dogs and not people so don’t misunderstand me please. Even my chickens come running to me when ever I go outside and what ever I am doing they are right there too. Pretty cool feeling to be so accepted by my raised from chicks flock. I guess I am talking myself into the Akita but I still worry about making a very bad choice. I love my animal family and living alone they are all I have which is really a great deal. I believe animals can tell who and what you are, instinct maybe, whether friend or foe. I am hoping if I bring an Akita puppy home he or she will be a good fit for us all. The chickens could use a good protector to keep the local foxes and coyotes away and it would be nice to have a friend watching my back specially these days. I am getting old and could really appreciate a a dog that could and would be a strong ally. Am I just crazy or am I thinking like somebody sensible is home in here? Please chime in and help me overcome this dilemma. Thanks :)

It's sounds like you're not only a good owner but a good person to. At the very least your taking the necessary precautions and thinking before acting which some dog owners don't do. IMO, I'm not a professional, but I do train dogs alongside my grandpa here in Arizona. I've also heard and read that getting an Akita while they're still young is the best time to have them and teach them rules and boundaries. And by what I'm reading your other dogs listen to you well and look at you as the leader, so I'm sure they will pick up that the puppy is apart of the pack eventually. I hope I helped at least a little.

@@Gerald-of-Riviera Hi Bud! Thanks for your input. :) I made the decision to go ahead with an Akita but instead of a male I chose to get a female. The reason is the Akita reputation of same sex aggression. I discussed this with the breeder and she agreed that a female would be a better fit with my 8 year old male AmStaff. While doing my research on the Akita breed same sex aggression looks to be a real issue. I am sure there are exceptions but the majority information is that sooner or later there will be problems. Being a male myself I am pro male but the smartest dog I ever had was a female Boxer so there is that. The AmStaff I lost last fall was my cuddle Buddy and sweet as can be, one I still have not so much cuddles but stable and gets along with the cat just fine and they play together often. To satisfy my own desires that could jeopardize my older AmStaff and the cat I decided it best to get a female Akita, part of that responsible adult thing. Sure I would love a big male but I would be throwing a monkey wrench into the gears of all our lives I think. This coming Saturday I will be making the trip to check out the puppy I chose and if she checks out I will be bringing her home. Things I will be looking for are is she friendly, is she scared or timid, does she interact well with the other puppies. A scared or timid puppy will be an unsure adult with fear aggression issues. Wish me luck! :)

You were very lucky cause the situation you describe could have gotten really ugly. I personally hate pit bullls just because of this type of temperament.

@@andermarg How many Pits have you been around or worked my man? That's just bad generalizing and shouldn't be used. If a Pit isn't raised right nor trained right then sure, I see your point. Ok so I’m gonna give it a try and hope that someone will answer my Akita questions. I have a 8 years old female Akita. She doesn’t live with me. She lives like 15 min drive from my home in a mountain house because it’s a lot chillier there, I’m from Venezuela so the weather it’s warm pretty much always. Yoko live in that house, she has a lottt of space and she’s always off leash there. She’s calm and easy to handle, although there’s has been biting couple of times with workers or strangers, nothing really serious and not common. She’s been great with children, but I’m always really careful because that makes me a little nervous. She doesn’t see me everyday but there’s people that go almost everyday that work there and take care of her. I always wanted for her to have another dog to be with her so she isn’t alone that much time. I wanna know. Is this a good idea? What about her having puppies and I keep one to be with her? How would this be? Should I keep a male or female? Or maybe having another breed puppy? She not aggressive but she is dominant, she’s like a Mom. Can an Akita be left alone with her puppies? Is this a stupid question? Can you guide me? Ohh! And she’s been having psychological pregnancies. never a boyfriend help please!!
