We bought a 4 month old Akita male, from first time breeder, and it has been a nightmare. I had 2 Akitas years back…no issues. He is 5 months and 24/7 eats everything from poop to green walnut shell peels and vomiting with us constantly cleaning up the yard (hard when they keep falling) and taking it out his mouth when he finds one and him snapping at us. Walking is impossible takes a year to get him down the road as no amount of treat motivates him, hes always best coming home. We don’t have a car so we can’t drive and walk him back…sometimes we have to carry him…and he’s not light. He was locked away with his two sisters for a full day by breeders (when they are away) from parents, and then let loose to eat all they could. The place they were kept when not home was small but they had nowhere to go so used there. Yard is fine, not sure why separate pups from parents. Lastly their dad barked. My Akitas never did. This young pup…barks at everything now and won’t stop. Getting food, someone there… He was affordable so we took a chance, didn’t realize it would be like this. The breeders were young, nice, friendly, and had beautiful adult dogs. The dad had awards….as a puppy (probably not as adult as he barks) Any advice? 6 grown adults living together trying to take care of it. Family dog. Japanese akita, white.

Omg yes! My American Akita has been left alone since she was 4mths. Plus, she was potty trained and housebroken. She has the run of 1800 sq ft home and also hangs out with my 26 year old African grey parrot. My akita loves going in and out of her crate. She loves watching tv and taking naps throughout the house. She is 2 yrs old now.

Do you mind sharing how long and how frequently you leave her alone on average?

When we first time left akita home alone, he damaged all living room. Next time we left him in crave. As he realised that we come back home, we left him free in the house, and now he never damage anything.

Great information on giving dogs alone time to build confidence, crate training with the appropriate size crates, and always preaching that dog owners be the leaders their dogs need.

My potential breeder told me leaving the pup home for 7-8 hours will be fine. She has a network of owners that she connected me with. Some of these channels have me thinking I’m going to have to spend hundreds of dollars a week on baby sitters

I did this with my malinois, just started working from home, she liked to car ride etc. and it backfired lol. I now have a possessive shadow, malinois breed is like that anyway but I made it worse. I cannot leave home unless my mom can pup sit, for more than 24 hrs because she doesn't like anyone but me, hubby and mom. I know I made a mistake, now lol, I have dog experience but no malinois experience until now. I know now though so it's a learning lesson to use 4 future pups

I'm getting crazy for letting my Akita Inu (8 months) alone in my house, even if I'm trying this since she was 2 months. I leave her after a long walk, with toys and stag-horn, but nothing seems working yet. I'm able to left home only when I left her with a full freezed cod Kong and I have about 40 minutes before she is able to finish it. After that, she starts to destroy literally everything in the house.

My akita puppy hates being alone. He hates it so much that he almost hurts himself trying to get out of his crate. I try to leave him alone as much as I can (in short intervals), but I have to leave him alone for 12 or so hours for work, and it is really hard for him. I've had him for two months and he is now much more comfortable being alone for an hour or two, but anything more than that and he becomes quite anxious. Also, he has an anxious personality that makes this specially challenging.

@@ammirofx8913 Hi. He is about 10 months old now, and he still feels very anxious when left alone. I have the fortune of having a relatively large home with a big backyard, so I just leave him with the back door open so he can go play outside or stay inside on his bed when he wants to. However, the first time I had to leave him completely alone for an extended period of time (about 36 hours due to a medical emergency), he did have a really tough time. He did have water and food since a friend of mine went to check on him every 12 hours or so, but he told me that my puppy was extremely afraid, and really aggressive towards him. But it's really a matter of getting him used to being alone little by little, and leaving him enough space to run around so that he doesn't destroy all your stuff. That's the other bad thing of leaving my dog alone, the first few times, he went around the rooms of the other members of my family and peed on the middle of their rooms. He also routinely grabs my clothes and breaks them if I leave him for too long. It does get better later, but just be prepared for that.

@@ammirofx8913 so, will you get one? If I made it sound a little bad, that was not my intention. Having Hank around is one of the best things that could have happened to me. I love "talking" to him and just being with him after a long day makes everything better. Sure, there are problems here and there, but with proper training and attention they are really not that bad

I agree I allow my Akita to freely roam in my property when I’m away. He can guard and keep himself busy with this task, do his business, be independent.
