Unfortunate that Akkaev’s career was cut short with injuries. I believe he would have been consistently at the top of the competition against the likes of Ruslan Nuridinov. He had such a raw/unrefined technique that worked for him. Klokov was unfortunately a talent in the wrong era. Too big for a 105 and too small for 105+. I think he would have been more successful in today’s 109 weight class

This is such a legendary battle. My favorite memory of Akkaev is him making a 195 kg snatch during euros. David rigert was shaking his head besides the platform.

Klokov looked to have more weight in him to be honest, especially on the clean and jerk. I guess its a hard thing to predict on the day though

Actually Akkaevs best front squat was 290 kg (330 kg clean pull)
