The adventure of bringing Paquita La Patita and her ducklings back to the lake. Paquita is a mallard duck that started laying eggs on May 14th 2020 in a salad patch on the balcony of our 3rd floor apartment in Konstanz (Lake Constance, Germany). We had 33 wonderful days observing the beginning of the cycle of life of these wonderful creatures and the sequence of events that lead to 8 little ducklings hatching on June 15th. Since our apartment is on the 3rd floor and the duck family had to cross the street to get to the lake, we helped them out to make it safely to the water. Due to the COVID-19 crisis we couldn’t get direct support from our local wildlife rehabilitator, but they instructed us on how to move the family back the water and we used a “duckling elevator” to bring the ducklings down from the third floor. Catching the mother together with the ducklings is definitely something only properly trained people should do. We did our very best to support this Mallard family with the resources and phone support we had access to. This experience was truly exhilarating and definitely a highlight of this very difficult 2020.

One of the most perfect examples I have ever seen, or even of which I have heard, of a family of wild animals being sheltered and supported in their hour of need and then released to the wild. I do not have the right words to praise you. Beautifully organised at every stage and beautifully, successfully executed!

Hi🥰 Watching from Australia. We saw firemen rescuing ducklings on our TV news today & I remember seeing your video before so I found it ,& showed my husband. We both think you did the right things. With mother down at ground level, you could rescue, guide & release for them to be freed at the water. Perfect ending. 🥰🤠👍🦘🦘🦘🌿🌿🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 🦆🌿🌿🌿

Great to see happy ending to this part of the story. If the duck returns, it is easier to catch adults by throwing a large towel over them, especially when they are in the corner like they were here.

And they say Germans do thing correctly. NO you catch the mother first then all is good.Millard females can give up quickly and abandoned the chicks if they feel its danger and they will mate again before end of the season. so always catch the mother first! I speak out of experience with years of nesting Millard on my roof and stuck babies on balconies eaten by seagulls

You could’ve just removed a panel and let them jump from the balcony the natural way. That wouldn’t have stressed them as bad as catching them and putting them in a pet carrier.

I hate this. First you should not allow mother duck to lay eggs in your balcony for harvesting. Then you should not play with her all the way to the water where you released her with ducklings. Animals are much clever than human beings. They better know how to take care of their kids. So if you released the mother duck with her kids in your society garden, she could find her own way. If you are worrying about cats n dogs of your area, she better know how to protect her kids. God has given power to protect n fight to every one for survive. Thanks.

Catching them was quite a fiasco...should have got a fish net or any kind of thin light sheet to throw over mom,,,and a towel over the babies...to be less stressful ...chasing them with a giant hand may be the most stressful thing they could have gone through......should have gone on you tube and checked out how to be able to catch a mother duck and her babies.....Then you made the mom walk all that distance,,,unbelievable...duh...at least they all made it to the lake.......but next time call a professional... I know you may have had good intentions....

Haha thanks for your “expert” recommendations (as you seem to be one?) if you read on the caption of the video of course we called experts and NO ONE was able to come to help due to the COVID confinement, so we were on our own and what we did was with guidance of our local animal protection person. You can work with special fish nets but we were not able to get them due to the pandemic and also they would have been hurt in the end. The mom had to walk with the babies to the lake because as you know babies cannot fly, but the crossing of the street was dangerous and that’s why we helped them (again after recommendation of our animal protection office). And lastly, I would not say watching youtube videos is the best source of information on how to help animals in danger, so calling your animal protection office and getting guidance is what should be done in this cases (and what we did). Thanks for your comment!
