Anyone curious about guard play back then should note a few things - if you have a physical defensive minded guard like Al Attles putting a forearm in your ribs (hand checking) while you try to get to your spot, you're not going to practice as many options for a high percentage shot off the dribble that you have today where players can only defend with their hips and feet. Tie this in with the strict carry calls, traveling, and more sensitive offensive charging rules back then mixed with the 3 point shot and you can see how the game has changed to open up guard and forward offensive options over time. The guards and forwards back then could still dominate games like your Jerry Wests, Oscar Robertsons, and Elgin Baylors - but they did so with different sometimes unusual looking tactics or shot selections compared with today's game. That's as big a reason why the game can look so different back then as any - rules dictated styles of play and that changes over time!

When did they only allow players to handcheck with one arm, 1976? I can't seem to find that info but know I read it. It would probably benefit channels like Thinking Basketball if you made a video talking about all these changes for ease of access. Combining the videos about rules you posted even. He's shown it a few times but his most recent video about Shaq made me think he hasn't researched pre 80s basketball enough.

@@jongib369 Shaq's era vs the 60s, for example, were so different. In Shaq's era he could bulldoze through people and the fouls was called on the dude laying on the floor! 🤣 In Wilt's era offensive foul calls were basically touch fouls. The no hand checking rules didn't come into effect until 2004 so the rules are completely freeing up the offense. There is also a big difference on how traveling is called (how step backs are called is WAY different now) and how dribbling is called. Facts

Casuals will continue to say uninformed things no matter how hard we try. . Its just a real shame when people with a voice like Thinking Basketball says silly things misleading people. Not on purpose but regardless it's giving the wrong impression
