In the early days, years before AL Jarreau became legendary, he was seen walking through the streets of Milwaukee Wisconsin, making funny and strange sounds. Not understanding what they were hearing, people thought AL Jarreau was crazy or mad until they learned better. In fact, he used to live directly across the street from my grandparents on West Capitol Drive for years. Sorry to say, I never got the chance to meet him during his early years. But I was fortunate enough to see him in concert on several occasions. And each time the man was phenomenal. My hat is off to my hometown hero and one of the valuable known treasures of Milwaukee.

Al Jarreau, simply the greatest. Having said this, the band and the repertoire after 1983 left a lot to be desired... I don't know what pushed him to abandon Jay Graydon & Co. in L.A. but he was working with UNBELIEVABLE musicians over there and producing masterpieces of the caliber of Breakin' Away and Jarreau (with musicians on a league of their own such as Steve Gadd, Steve Porcaro - incredible 12/8 - the monstrous Jerry Hey and his out of this world arrangement, Jeremy Lubbock, Tom Canning, the unmatched Jay Graydon and his producing skills / and guitar playing, Abe Laboriel, and many others!!). That gang, with the playing and arranging of Maestro Jerry Hey was UNMATCHED to this day. The level of playing/songwriting/producing/arranging (even the voicings on those changes - and what changes!! - is to these days unmatched!!). This is my professional opinion but I'm sure if there are musicians here writing they know what I'm talking about! And of course you Al, absolutely unique!

Agreed Prefer the slick Graydon sound to the more Caribbean Nike Rodgers view

Neil Larsen is a great keyboard player and extraordinary musician, a league ahead of Tom Canning and certainly not second to anyone when it comes to harmonic knowledge. It's totally legit if you don't like Al's 80s repertoire (I can agree to some extent), but don't blame that on superior musicians such as Neil Larsen, Michael Paulo and Michael Patches Stewart!
@enricomarconi8358 Жыл бұрын
@@oriomenoni7651 Tom Canning is just the tip of the iceberg. You're perhaps forgetting that people like George Duke (Roof Garden and other tracks) together to an amazing Steve Gadd or Jeff Porcaro were playing in these albums? How about the Brass section lead by the Genius Jerry Hey? You might argue "is a matter of taste" but I don't go with that as I can understand music on a fine level (a very fine one for that matter) and I can tell you that the voicing (since I have the parts) in these three albums (This Time, Breakin' Away and Jarreau) of these chord changes were way more refined than the ones in the following albums (High Crime for instance) not to mention that the writing, arranging and producing (not to mention the 'live playing' instead of drum machines heard in High Crime) were far far superior to my ears and musician knowledge. But what do I know...
@enricomarconi8358 Жыл бұрын
@@oriomenoni7651 in Spain (This Time Album) Larry William's solo is just amazing (talking about another keyboardist worth mentioning). Originally Chick Corea was the name proposed by Jay Graydon but it was abandoned later on for scheduling problems... These were the names orbiting L.A. in these years...

@@Louie914 I am somewhere between. Al's voice suffered from using cocain, no doubt. He spoke about using it on George Duke's funeral. You can find it on KZbin. If people are taking it for decades, the voice suffers. You can even hear it in this video. Same with many other artists, for example Whitney Houston, Bobby Kimball, Chaka Khan.
