In 1976 I heard this on the radio, I did a U turn as fast as I could to get to the record store. We were blown away and when the sax came in, I almost slid off the couch. A beautiful song, thanks for the history.

I wish I could go back to '76 and stay there. I was 22 then. The perfect age for loving all the incredible rock. You know your lyrics.....I'd bet my last pack of Luckies that you can sing the entire "Thick as a Brick" LP. Thanx a bunch for your immaculate review, as usual.

It took a year for Stewart to finally get this song the way he liked. It just about drove Alan Parsons crazy engineering this the exact way Stewart wanted it. But, to most of us it was worth it. This is, by far, the greatest song of the 20th century. Thanx, Mr. Timeless.

Man, I know I’ve heard this song at least a million times since it came out in the fall of ‘76 (I was in 7th grade), and I could easily hear it a million times more; it’s more than a song, it’s a musical experience.

OMG ! Thanks for (immediately !) reacting to Year of the Cat after I suggested it ! This song is just a feast --- lyrics, arrangement, musicianship, production quality, all just perfect. I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio a couple of years ago (wasn't alive yet in '76. Hahaha !) and trying not to freak out, particularly during the instrumental break around 3 minutes into the song. It's just gorgeous !

The funny thing is, I’ve been meaning to play Al for awhile now. And I NEVER take requests. Don’t ask why, I just don’t. But your comment was the reminder I needed. That break in the middle is musical perfection - timeless! I also can’t believe there is a recording of the show I saw in 1976, now available on the deluxe CD package. Can’t wait to hear that!

Year of the Cat is my "desert island" song, when I first heard it at age 13 I dreamed of growing up to be that woman in the silk dress (too bad life didn't quite turn out that way, *sigh*). Back in 1980 I got my first stereo (AM/FM radio with cassette deck, basically a small boombox), I spent that summer discovering (and recording on a casette) all the amazing music being played on FM radio, Al Stewart quickly became one of my favorites, he had five songs that could always be heard somewhere on the dial that summer -- Year of the Cat, On the Border, Time Passages, Midnight Rocks, Song on the Radio. I don't know if this is still done, but back then if a song was "too long" (meaning more than 3 minutes) the stations would play a shortened version with sections of the song spliced out, which even at my young age of 13 I thought was just blasphemy. Both Year of the Cat and Time Passages had truncated versions that would air and it was always so disappointing (and annoying) when you'd be singing along only to realize the song skipped a whole stanza!

I always liked “End Of The Day” from the Time Passages album, and “Flying Sorcery” from Year of the Cat.

For some reason I always felt the song Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty that came out 2 years later is the twin brother of this one, similar style, rythim, melodies and the fact it was also a Scotch singer

I always play them together (unless I'm feeling like binging on the whole Al Stewart album, that is) !

Al Stewart has such an amazing voice. I can't imagine anyone covering this song and making it sound as good without his vocals. You might like Mark Hollis the singer and song writer of "Talk Talk" from the 80's. Their music changed drastically from album to album. If you listen to their last album "Laughing Stock" you would not guess it was the same band who first released "The Party's Over." One of my favorite songs by them is "Time It's Time" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKiwaGqJiN1_ppo) also off my favorite album by them "The Colour Of Spring."
