I remember playing this on boring sunday afternoons during the 80's. In the Netherlands all shops would be closed on sundays and as a kid i found it the most boring day of the week, especially if i had to go with my parents somewhere. I had a lot of time to myself as well and i would often play on my good ol' C64 and use the power adapter as a heater for my feet. The C64 was legendary in my opinion. I had so many games i could never play them all. Last ninja i did play and i finished it.

This game has legendary status, and for graphics, music, and sheer atmosphere it's well-deserved. At the time it was simply mind-blowing how far they managed to push the by then ~5 year old C64. That said, I always found the gameplay itself to be a bit frustrating - the jumping sequences were extremely unforgiving and often failed to graphically properly convey 'safe ground', the puzzles and items needed were sometimes pretty vague, and the fighting is ultimately pretty boring. Maybe a proper block function and AI would have made it interesting. But all that didn't matter because it looked so bloody amazing. And the music. So good. Also ninjas, which were huge at the time.

Man, I played this back in high school on my C64. I remember thinking this game was so amazing. The music in "The Dungeons" was chilling. Looking at this video, it's hard to believe I was so captivated by something with such repetitive and simplistic gameplay. But in the 80's it was leagues ahead of even more simple arcade games.

I won't wax lyrical since that's tantamount to stating the Beatles wrote good music! Back in the day I initially struggled to complete level 1 and rang System 3. The lady said, "You need to throw the smoke bomb at the dragon" before I'd explained anything. Clearly I wasn't the only caller with this problem! It was plain sailing after that...

Lol at the lady story. Don't know how we did it without walk throughs in the 80s !!

I completed all levels, without losing energy.. hehe (i played it 25-30x), and i needed about 10 months to complete it the first time (about 6 months in lv1, because of the dragon, was the hardest riddle for me, hehe)...

I'm really curious about that sound that starts this track? What is it? It sounds bell-like but of course was made with the SID chip. I am trying to emulate this sound using the iPad app SID Tracker. I have managed to emulate the other sounds of the game pretty well, but am stuck on this. I think its some kind of square wave, possibly ring modulated, with some resonace in the filter.
