Released in 1990, Rad Mobile was the first of Sega's arcade titles to use the firms System 32 arcade hardware. Although this would be the final generation of firm's "Super Scaler" sprite scaling technology, it was also Sega's first arcade board based around a 32-bit architecture.
From a technical standpoint, Rad Mobile is incredibly impressive for the time of its release. The game's USP is delivering a realistic and uninterrupted racing experience in the first-person, including wet weather and night-time driving conditions. Certain stages feature roads with high-banked curbs which cause the viewpoint and cockpit of the player vehicle to tilt and rotate in the corresponding direction.
As for the the game structure, its closest to that of OutRun and Hang-On in that the player participates in a point-to-point race through different climates and environments. Players participate in an interstate rally across the U.S. from West to East coast, taking in the sights and sounds of industrial zones, rail yards, rocky mountain passes and secluded forests.
Unfortunately, the technical ingenuity can't make up for the fact the game is actually rather dull. The opponent cars zoom off into the distance or rubber band constantly as the game enforces catch-up to deliberately prevent the player from building any discernible lead for too long. On the one hand, I can understand the need to keep up the pretence of challenge and excitement, but even putting in a flawless driving never produces the kind of satisfaction you'd expect for mastering a game.
As a technical showcase, Rad Mobile is further evidence that Sega was without peer in the arcade space at this time, but it's also a reminder that graphics aren't everything. Despite being 3 years old at this point, OutRun was, in my opinion at least, still THE driving game to beat.

I remember playing this in the arcade with my dad as a kid at around 7 years old. Once both of us could beat the game, it became a contest to see who could do it using the fewest quarters. My record was a simple perfect run on 2 quarters but the old man had to one-up me and do it on 1 quarter (he got lucky there was one in the machine already) AND drove the whole run with one arm as he was holding my infant little brother at the time. Good memories indeed.

It's all the details that do it, the rain in particular is impressive with all the little details, like how it takes a few seconds for the driver to turn on the windscreen wipers.

I played this back in the mid 90s in Chicago IL USA at a local putt-putt amusement place (large sit-down cabinet) and remember this being the hardest Sega racer I'd ever played! Looking back, aside from Capcom's "Slipstream" (built on Sega's expert sprite based hardware), I remember Rad Mobile being Sega's most ambitiously "realistic looking" arcade sprite-based racer yet, just as Sega finally let go and embraced 3D polygonal graphics. You can see the little details they put into this game to give it a "real racing" feel on a spite-based format.

I used to love playing this one with the moving cabinet. The sounds were really immersive.

Played this in the arcades many times. On the Springfield level where you drive on the railway track; you see the train catching up in your rear view mirror. If you bring your car to a standstill you don't actually get hit by the train. The train stops as well.

the arcade i used to local had the DX cabinet with the seat that shifted left and right when you turned, it reminded me of Galaxy force 2 which was also made by Sega and had a full 360 rotating seat+screen, thanks for sharing this great Sega Gem with us and i'll catch ya next race!

This was fun to watch. During those days I spent so many quarters on Street Fighter 2, Outrun, Turbo Outrun, and other games. I remember not having a lot of playing time with Rad Mobile because not every arcade had it. And when I did find it, IIRC it was multiple quarters to play. I don't think I ever got past the 2nd or 3rd stage I always thought it was so cool how you could manage the headlights and wipers. Good memories

Obviously the programmers behind this game never took geography classes. Since when did Chicago ever have palm trees or even cruise ships? Palm trees wouldn’t survive in the harsh winter weather and it’s impossible to have a cruise ship on Lake Michigan. Caves in Indianapolis?! Roads being way up high in Las Vegas, or banked roads on normal public streets? Kinda makes your head spin….
