Fun fact about Icelanders that this meme just reminded me: even though Iceland was indeed settled by the Vikings, at some point, the Icelandic settlements were literally running out of women, so the Icelanders made a little trip to Ireland, kidnapped a bunch of women and brought them back to their homeland. So modern day Icelanders are pretty much like cousins to the Irish. 😄

Another issue Icelanders have is the fact that their last names are based on their parent's first name, so they can't even get a hint that they might be related due to having the same last name.
@Liggliluff2 жыл бұрын
Except that last names are a flawed system anyway. If person A and B have a son and a daughter: C and D, then C and D has the same last name. By tradition, women changes their name, so C keeps his name when he marries and have child E, while D changes her name when she marries and have child F. Child E and F are cousins, but have different last names. It's a worthless system.
@arska-pelejavlogejajaautoj50302 жыл бұрын

Well, two languages can share 80% of the words of the dictionary, but not in normally used conversations. I notice this a lot when learning romance languages. For example, "to forget" in Spanish is "olvidar". Supposedly, that word exists in Portuguese as well, but is quite archaic.. nobody uses it... everyone uses "esquecer" (olvidar vs esquecer...nothing alike).
