Emerald went to a stately private school called Marlborough College and then Oxford University, and got to meet Oliver as well as Felix types in the course of her education. Another pupil of those two establishments was Alice Winn who has written a superb book about the First World War, which she got the idea for from the listings of pupils of Marlborough College killed in action. The book is “In Memoriam”. Well worth a read

I just got back from seeing Saltburn and when I tell you the SAME parts you mentioned is what had me wincing... 😂😂😂 That slurpage part had me wanting to stop drinking my soda! 😂😂😂 What a deliciously corrupt film! Barry deserves an Oscar nod for his performance. Kudos to cast, crew, the writer and director... Everyone involved! I thoroughly enjoyed this film from start to finish! Rosamund's line about being a one-time lesbian had me cracking up! And YOU with the side dick comment!!! 😂😂😂 This is a film I'll definitely watch again to see all the details I may have missed first time around.

It helps when there are stars that normal fangirls/boys go to the theaters to see and their movie turns into a clusterf*ck. This was my experience with Mother!, where everyone came to see Jennifer Lawrence but it ended in people praying with their phone's flashlight on. It just makes the film more enjoyable with normal people's reaction (as I'm so desensitized to this stuff). I'm saving my money to see other films but I'm ready to watch that bathtub scene when it comes out on digital.

You said it yourself hes been planning it from the beginning. Thats cunning and smart. I dont know why you noticed that then forgot about it a few minutes later. The point of the piece alachia is about the quest for wealth, power, influence and status. The main character arrives at college after studying so damn hard he could beat even the teacher in a pop quiz. When he notices his teacher doesnt give a shit about hows hes ahead on his work, he immediately earns its because the teacher values personal relationships and connections more than hard work and ethics. Because he agreed to cut the rich cousin a break right in front of him. Its all power dynamics and the exchange of bodily fliluids centered around control and submission and stolen or given knowledge.

I went to see the movie in the theater. The audience reacted as Alachia says and, yes I discovered that I am not twisted enough to not gasp through the 4 scenes highlighted in this review. But there were other things in the story that didn't add up for me. One was, where did Oliver come from? What made a middle class British boy such a diabolical rich people-killing character? Another was, did he actually kill Sir James too? I missed something with the quick reading of the newspaper story. And finally, the police was non-existent in this movie despite several people in the same family suddenly dying one after the other soon after Oliver showed up. I wouldn't mind sitting in for an extra half to get answers to these questions! Happy Thanksgiving!

He's a psychopath that's why he did what he did. And yeah, it's implied he killed Sir James. The police were non existent because as you see in the breakfast scene after Felix's death, the family disassociates.. they don't have empathy.

The movie masterfully pays tribute to Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel and 1999 film "The Talented Mr. Ripley," brilliantly intertwining elements of suspense and psychological intrigue. There are also parallels between the 1990 play and the 1993 film 'Six Degrees of Separation.'

For me, This film rides on the same border as Silo’ (100 years of sodom). Both films are absolutely unapologetically insane. Very few films have left me with a sick feeling to my stomach, and although this one didn’t, it tried to. I guess i'm just built Ford tough after watching so many Darker Reality films.. Still, I feel as though this film showcases the darker sides of envy, displaying just how far some are willing to go in order to get what they desire all while still being sure to allow the audience to also experience their wrath when they don’t. The film is very punishing to the audience the way it twists and Manipulates you, stealing your expectations and murdering them completely.

Ripleys Game with John Malkovich is worth watching if you can find it. Malkovich take on Tom Ripley is very amusing. Decent enough movie that sort of fumbles the third act. I read that Keoghan improvised the grave scene( I’m guessing the OTT stuff). Part of me wonders if the director wanted the “cool story” for an anecdote rather than what works. When he took his shirt off and was hugging the dirt that would’ve been powerful imagery on its own. No subtly, just went all out at the end. Suppose this is all part of the gambles made when making a movie. Glad I watched for Rosamund Pike & R E Grant alone, could watch an entire film of them with Carey Mulligan.

Sounds like it is going for shock value. That’s everything I want to avoid in movies. Maybe cinema has diverged from anything I find immersive and entertaining. From the description, Saltburn sounds like the cinematic equivalent of a stalker or a flasher. It reminds me a little of Parasite. I loved the subtly and clever humor of the first 2 acts and then it was like they let Tarantino write and direct the third act which was over the top. Regarding the Brideshead Revisited series from the 80s, I didn’t see it as about that. I thought it was about an outsider that gets invited into a world of opulence and falls in love with his friend’s sister. I read the novel as well… I do enjoy some dark comedy, After Hours by Scorsese comes to mind…

You think this is better than Ripley...Ripley(at least in the move) represnts the corrupting power of wealth and the fear of losing it. Hes not a born murderer and murder is his last resort, so the murder is messy and chaotic. Ripleys ability to navigate the chaos and con his way into Dickeys life is really impressive. I will take a more relatable everyman navigating a chaotic situation rather then the mythological cool calm killer (even though he's supposed to be a child) Oliver isn't any better at this then Ripley, hes creepy as hell and stairs at every on with dead fish eyes...you wouldn't spend two minutes with this person if you could avoid it. The only reasons hes a smooth operator is because the writing allows it...because its bad, its much worse writing then Ripley in any case, but you got your smooth Don juan murdered so that makes movie good?

I’ll be honest, this movie was surprisingly underwhelming for me; didn’t find the twists particularly surprising or that compelling, didn’t really like any of the characters or found the plot to be particularly entertaining or profound in themes/messages, and the film honestly got less & less entertaining as it continued for me; all in all, this film just wasn’t my “cup of tea” so to speak. Not bad per se, but not especially good to me either 🤷🏾‍♂️

Thanks SO MUCH for your summary … glad you enjoyed the movie and movie going experience - I did!! A few observations … It *IS* a Vampire movie!! Oliver never loved Felix … was Oliver even gay?? Or in the least ‘gay’ for Felix?? There is no love there … (Not that the gay thing is even important!) Oliver is not obsessed with Felix ‘sexually’. Oliver and Felix are just British … period. Let’s face it … the coolest men IN THE WORLD are British. Gay/straight relationships between classes has always been fascinating. The rest of the world doesn’t really have a reference for this … everyone should have sex with a sexually adventurous British man at least once in their lives … 🤣🤣 Oliver covets everything Felix is - his life, his looks, his popularity, his wealth - the absolute ease and sexiness he exudes. Oliver does not love Felix. There is no intimacy. There is no devotion. Obsession - yes. Watch the movie a second time … I did … check out every time Oliver looks at Felix - is that love?? I don’t think so. Oscar does not desire or love Felix. He desires and loves everything that Felix IS!! Oscar is a Vampire … he even SAYS SO!! (From page 62 of the script) VENETIA Ollie... His hand slides up further. VENETIA (CONT’D) It’s- it's not- (agonized) The right time of the month. OLIVER And is that something you think I’d be worried about? He keeps going. Venitia is entranced. OLIVER (CONT’D) Lucky for you I'm a vampire. Do you think the menstrual blood scene was just for ‘shock value’?? In drinking the bathwater, Oliver is trying to absorb the absolute essence of Felix … brilliantly represented - in my opinion! When Oliver tries the locked door … is he tying to enter to make out with Felix? To kill Felix? Less of the former … more of the latter - I think. There are mentions about being ‘cold blooded’ in the movie. OK, let’s go there: ‘Saltburn’?? Do some research on Vampires/graves and salt … Oliver is a vampire - he was killed and buried (metaphorically) - the old Oscar - or what we thought was the old Oscar - is dead. Salt would have been sprinkled on his grave … when he resurrected (to the new Oscar) the salt burnt him - at the end he is an exceptionally f*cked up character living in his massive mansion/castle. Burnt by the salt … That’s my take … 🤣🤣 Thanks again for your spoiler review!! I love anyone that takes the time to put themselves out there and critique great cinema!! This is the best movie of the year …. tied with ‘Beau Is Afraid’ … did you review that??!! well the thing is, felix is straight, yes, but he rejects Oliver coz Oliver is horrible person and he lied to him about his entire life…also i think you’re confused because if someone has been dating the opposite sex their whole life and then someone makes them realize they like men and women then that’s not a straight person that’s a bisexual…like what’s with everyone’s aversion to the word bisexual 😂 and I don’t think that venetia or felix deserved what happened to them, they weren’t even that bad…venetia was bitchy but she was straight up depressed and had a horrible eating disorder probably because of her parents being horrible, and felix was just trying to be a good person and help out someone he thought was his friend…all he got was lied to literally every time he ever spoke to Oliver 🫠 and then the man got killed for finding out the truth…it’s kind of an insane take to be happy that Oliver murdered all these people coz like the only one we really see be a horrible person to anyone is elpeth and that’s who he saves for last

The thing is, Felix wants to be a “good person” but does not want to do the work of being a good person. He immediately fell for Oliver’s fake story as he wanted to be a “saviour” so badly. Kind of exemplified how he didn’t know the names of the footmen, because they were black. He made up so many excuses.

If it was all an act by a genius con-artist/murderer, and he truly didn't love the guy (in fact he states that he hated him), then why the tub drain scene? We, the audience, were the only ones to witness this and it therefore betrays the big plot twist later in the film because it serves no purpose and contradicts the reveal. The scene is only there for shock and to throw off the audience. But this only happens if Oliver knows theres an audience watching him and the director is therefore breaking the 4th wall. How did he murder the father? Or know the father would die so soon? How did he kill Pamela after she gets booted from Saltburn early on? Why didn't he get rid of the other freeloader Farleigh, who was the biggest threat to his billion dollar plan and nearly ruined it twice. No, instead we see Oliver jerk him off while demanding to be left alone. Ooookaaay... I will say the grave f'ing scene was interesting but like the tub drain, it only works if Oliver knows the audience is watching. I guess it depends on whether or not you believe Oliver's epilogue about loving Felix and not being IN love with him and in fact actually hating him. Also I have a question for the females that loved this film so much (seems like there's a lot)... are you into having your own menstrual blood shoved in your mouth? Is that a thing?

I agree with you about Farleigh being left as a loose end. Once Farleigh found out the whole family was dead, you'd think he'd go straight to the police with his suspicions! Also, I did even get his relationship to the family. At first I thought he was supposed to be their half-brother, sharing the same father but with a poor Black woman as his mother.
