Turkish Culture Explained: How Ottoman Empire shaped cultural diversity in Turkey

Aladdin's Turkey

Күн бұрын

Turkish culture is influenced by Greeks, Arabs, Persians, Armenians, Georgians, Kurds just to name a few.
This is unique and beautiful, and the reason for that was almost no threat of persecution in the Ottoman Empire. The Empire encouraged the mixing of cultures, some might call it the 'the original melting pot' of sorts.
In this episode, I will attempt to break down the cultural diversity of Turkey, and how the Ottomans were instrumental in developing it.
Let's start with the heart, the land itself, Anatolia and Thrace. These 2 regions are split into 7 smaller sub-regions, these are called Aegean, Mediterranean, Marmara, Black Sea, Central, Southeast and Eastern Anatolia.
The geography of the region plays a crucial role in its development. For example, the Black Sea area might give you Switzerland or Austria vibes, whereas the southeast might be hot like a Middle Eastern country.
The Aegean region is pretty much a carbon copy of Greece, but central Anatolia would tell a very different tale.
The cuisine, the music, the dances, the accents, the language, the traditions, the customs, all depend on geography. And when you have a land with 12 thousand years of recorded civilization history, geography is not something you can ignore.
Another reason why Turkey is so diverse is that it has been at the crossroads of different empires and civilizations throughout history, it's been even called the cradle of civilizations.
You really need to understand how Ottoman society functioned and behaved to understand modern Turkish culture came to be.
So, What are you saying Aladdin?
What I am saying is this, we all belong to this earth and the reason Turkish culture is so rich is thanks to the Ottomans who moulded and absorbed cultural heritage from the lands they ruled and conquered.
That’s why Turkish culture with its cities, architecture, language, religion, ethnicities, cuisine, music and traditions is so diverse.
That's why there's room for everyone in this country.
That's why whether you’re from a western culture or an eastern culture you’ll find that your culture left its mark here
And that's why when looking at Turkish or any other culture, one should look beyond the negativity on the internet and appreciate how multifaceted it is.
Thanks for watching and see you in the next one.

@@Eren.3210 Im just curious to know why do you hate Arabs so much? It's seems that you love Europeans and hate and discriminate Arabs? But you state that Turkish are nice people.I agree Turkish people are indeed nice people as my best friend is Turkish and he is an amazing human being. You having hatred towards Arabs is not a good example of a good human being.

@@Eren.3210 thanks for your response and expressing your views. The thing that I don't understand is that you are mixing up two different things together.Arabs & Islam.Do you have problems with Islam or do you have problem with middle eastern Arabs? If Islam then most Muslims are not actually Arabs they're Indonesians. Also Turkey itself is Muslim with the ottomans all being Muslim. Also Turkish language has so many arabic words. In essence turkey has major influences from Arabs and Muslims. So you hating on Arabs and Muslims is really hating on yourself because your ancestors and culture is strongly intertwined and influenced by Islam and Arabs. Also last time I checked the Ottomans were defeated and conquered by Europeans not Arabs. Yes the Arabs did revolt against the ottomans during WW1 but did you ask yourself why they did that? Also the Arabs paid the price for it and they pretty much lost Palestine for it.In summary Arabs are not perfect neither are Turks,or Greeks or Kurds or Armenian etc. I love Turkey and I love Turkish people and culture. As a Muslim I will always support and pray for peace and success of my Muslim brothers and sisters.I pray that Allah guide and remove the negativity and hatred you have towards Muslims or middle eastern Arabs whichever it is.Have a good night.peace

as a Kurdish person, i can't relate to turkish-centric turkey, there must be a change, if the country was called Anatolia and had two official ethnicities and languages, like Canada for example, i would be able to be part of that country way more, alas with turkey as a Kurd i never feel "turkish" the only solution is a free Kurdistan

I'm so glad I discovered your channel, Aladdin! I come from Romania and I have also noticed how our countries mostly share the same culture thanks to the common Ottoman past! But I have a request for you. *Please give some details about the work culture in Türkiye,* especially regarding the *work-life balance.* I am mostly interested to know whether in Türkiye people have their *personal time respected* (like in the western countries, where working schedules coincide with the actual working hours) or whether people are expected to stay and do (unpaid) overtime work - which is typical for a lot of non-western countries. I think it would be a great topic for a video of its own, especially if there is more to talk about than what can fit inside a youtube comment!

All what Turkey needs to be a tolerance modern country for all those ethnics you mentioned to have freedom for ex education in their own language , autonomy to rule their regions , and freedom , but unfortunately Turkey ‘s policy is still like medieval time , ethnic cleansing , force and fear policy are ruling there , they still think they can solve their problems by bombing , killing, displaying and forcing people . Force and fear will never solve the problems but make it worse for the future .

Yogurt exists since Mesopotamia time , it’s was called mast in north Mesopotamia and Leban in south , Turks came gave it another name , that doesn’t mean they created , lol even tho hopefully those little thing won’t matter in 2023 , English language is dominating the world sooner or later and it’s yoghurt in English now ,

@vassilisioannou5488 2 жыл бұрын
you calming that yogurt is Turkish because of the name being from Turkish origin, The cuisine of the ancient Greeks included a dairy product known as oxygala (οξύγαλα) which was similar to today's known yogurt.Galen (AD 129 - c. 200/c. 216) mentioned that oxygala was consumed with honey, similar to the way thickened Greek yogurt is eaten today and Greece was part of the Ottoman empire so you cant clam to invent yogurt just because of the Turkish name, like you said Turkey was influenced by many cultures.

Sadly modern Turkey last that diversity because of ethnic nationalism

Turks are really welcoming when it comes to foreigners, BUT it is only limited to white foreigner and not people from Middel East. Turks are so harsh and rude against Middel Easterns. I visited Istanbul from Scandinavia, I was shocked from the amount of disrespect from Turks. It was not what I have imagined Turks were like. Definitely not visiting again, even though I love the food and country within it self.

Bilgili ve müslüman Türkler bütün yabancılara saygılıdır. Biz kültürümüze ve dinimize bağlıyız. Fakat ortadoğululara saygısız davrananlar, laik ve seküler olan Türkler maalesef.

We do not care where you are from. But if we notice you are disrespectful or badmouthing us, we won't give a quarter. Tis our culture. Like it or leave or never come back.

His first sentences are already explaining what Turkish culture is all about. Behind his sugar coated BS, it is colonialism, just like the British. As this video was posted the Turkish authoriterian regime of erdogon was already helping its so called one nation puppet, Azerbaijan further plan to push the native Armenians out of yet their another land, historically called Artsakh. Just as they did with Nakhijevan, western Armenia, and other areas. At least the common wealth nations recognize their actions. But the Muslims and even worse Turkic Muslims, never admitted to their genocidal, ethnic cleansing of natives that actually shrieked the Christian poppulations from thriving to mere hundred thousands in a matter of 100 years, since the 18th century. Velad the impailor of Romanoa, from whom the Dracula was created, hated the ottoman thugs, who inslaved Europeans and other, took their sons to become janoceries, their daughters to become wives, and gave Christians 2nd class citizenship. At the end, Ararat and Van, 2 symbols of Armenian culture and in the west, Aija Sophia and many others are controlled by this dictatorship state.
