The Ottomans. Hardly any Turkish ruling dynasty achieved as much fame and power as they did. Once they were the most powerful family in the world. Their state stretched across three continents. And even today, their influence still shapes the landscape of Turkey, the heartland of their empire: from houses of worship and palaces to castles and resorts, the Ottomans have not been forgotten. They produced powerful rulers who were honored by their own subjects and respected with reverence by foreign countries. But the true origins of the Ottoman dynasty are hardly known. At least not in the Western world.
Yet knowledge of the Ottoman Empire's prehistory is important for understanding its behavior in both domestic and foreign policy. For example, to understand why the Ottomans were so open-minded about Byzantium, or to find out how the sons and daughters of Osman controlled all of Anatolia through wars on the one hand and a clever marriage policy on the other. Ultimately, this dynasty saw all other states as potential enemies.
Because the tribe, which made possible the rise of the Ottomans to a world empire, literally had to fight for survival for centuries. Envy, discord and betrayal were the order of the day. This is their story: the Kayi tribe.
This is a re-upload of the German original, tranlasted into English. As the Project File for the Animated World maps has been lost, the original German maps were re-used. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Actually, until about 750 AD, the "Pharaoh's canal" was in function, but, what the Ottomans really blockaded the access to the monsoon trade routes thru the Red and Arabian seas to the coast of India. Access wich the Portuguese fought a centuries long war against the Sublime Gate.

The existence of Turks in Europe started in BC, but in the 4th century we dominated all of eastern Europe. States such as the Hun empire, the Avar empire, the İdil-Bulgarian khanate spread to Europe and the Balkan geography from the north of the Black Sea. Bulgarians are an important branch of Turkish history, They are originally Turks, Bulgarian is a Turkish word, they became Slavic in time, for example King Şişman in history, as we use in current Turkish language , "sisman" = fatty man
@MilleniumBK
@MilleniumBK 2 жыл бұрын
@@isaakman4640 Thanks for your interesting answer. I know that the Bulgarians are of Turkic origin. In the first centuries, religion was Tengrism. Unfortunately, over the centuries much of the language was lost, but it remained with our Chuvash relatives. There are still many Turkish words in the current Bulgarian language. Also, most administrative positions were of ancient Turkic origin such as: kaphan, bagatur, boyar, boil, tarkan, icirgu boila etc. Next to Madara there is a preserved horseman with interesting inscriptions from the time of the khans, and in Pliska a rosette with runes and the IYI sign was found. In fact we have very close traditions and culture.
@MilleniumBK
@MilleniumBK 2 жыл бұрын
@@arslanyabgu9516 I would not say that the Slavs assimilated the Bulgarians, because it is known from history that the Bulgarians were the rulers and were the elite of the state. There is not a single famous Slav mentioned in the leadership of the state. The administrative system was organized in the Turkic style with the following positions of Turkic origin: han, kaphan, tarkan, boyar, icirgu boila, boil, bagatur etc. There is an inscription stating that Khan Omurtag moved his army against the Greeks and Slavs. My assumption is that the Slavic script was chosen because at that time it was on the rise, and the Turkic script in Bulgaria was not developed. The Bulgarians had to write their Turkic language in Greek letters.

The real name was Devlet-i Aliyye until 18th century! Only western epires/states were calling them othman state/otman empire... The names turk and atrak as designating the Mamlüks have lasted up to the very end of the Mamlük sultanate. The Ottomans, their state, and their lands have other names in the Mamlük sources. Even during their conquest of Syria and Egypt the Ottomans are called Uthmaniyya, rüm (or arwüm), and quite frequently taräkima or turkmän." However, atrāk and turkiyya in connection with the Turkish speaking peoples and their lands in and about Anatolia do appear in those sources, albeit very rarely. Already Ibn Fadl Allah al-Umari, in the first half of the fourteenth century, speaks about mamlakat al-atrak bil-rum and bilad al-aträk bil-rüm. A later historian of the mid-fifteenth century, Ibn Taghribirdi, calls those lands al-turkiya, biläd al-turkiyya, and barr al-turkiyya, in connection with the import of wood and flour from Iljün and the supplying by sea of the Mamluk forces fighting the Turkmen Shāh Siwar.¹

Almost nothing is now known of Osman, founder of the House of Osman, the man remembered as the first of the Ottoman sultans. “Osman Bey appeared,” stated a laconic chronograph, later. No one knows when or where he was born, and for a long time not a single artefact existed that could be confidently dated to his lifetime. Now two coins have come to light, one in a private collection in London and the other in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, inscribed Osman ibn Ertugrul.4 Even his name is the subject of some controversy. The Greek historian Pachymeres,5 who gave us the description of the Sangarius flood and is the one contemporary writer to mention Osman’s name, did not call him Osman at all but rather Ataman. The surprising notion that Osman had another name finds support in two later sources, one an armchair geography written around 1350 in Arabic and the other a biography of the Muslim saint Haji Bektash, circa 1500. Ataman is a Turkish name or maybe Mongol, while Osman is impeccably Muslim, the Turkish form of the Arabic ‘Uthman - as in the companion of the Prophet Muhammad, the third Caliph of Islam. This has led to some suspicion that our Osman, or Ataman, the Ottoman, might have been born a pagan, that he may have taken his new name Osman later when he became a Muslim. But if this were true, if Osman were indeed a convert to Islam who changed his name, why would his sons have kept their genuinely Turkish names, who were Muslims beyond any doubt?6 From what Pachymeres wrote, about the only thing we can surmise of the Turk he called Ataman is that he was a warrior. With the Sangarius (Sakarya) River raids and the victory at Bapheus, Turkish warriors came from far and wide to join him.7 Ataman laid siege to Nicaea and, though he was not able to take the city, subjected the surrounding area to raids, killing many, taking some captive, the tur ish flood 9 and scattering the rest. He did take several other fortresses and fortified towns in the Sangarius valley, using them to store his plunder. Howard, D. (2017). A History of the Ottoman Empire. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press., pp 8-9 Ibn Battuta claimed to have met Orhan, “the greatest of the kings of the Turkmens and the richest in wealth, lands and military forces.” Orhan “fought with the infidels continually,” and moved regularly between his more than one hundred castles, checking that they were in good repair, never staying more than a month in any one place.12 Ibn Battuta’s impression of Orhan as engaged in incessant combat is emphatically supported by Greek writers who left accounts. Howard, D. (2017). A History of the Ottoman Empire. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press., pp 11

Atman or Ataman originates from the Greek pronunciation. After the Turks became Muslims, they continued to use Turkish names or Arabic or Persian names. We see that Seljuk Sultans used Turkish and Arabic names simultaneously. For example, Sultan Alparslan's name was Muhammed Alparslan. With the influence of Persian culture, Persian names such as Giyaseddin or Keykubat were also used. While his own name was Osman, his son's name could well have been Orhan. Trying to understand which religion people are by looking at the names they use is prejudice.

Among the factors that weakened the Ottoman Empire was the decision to engage in losing wars that did not take into account the readiness factors and capabilities of the opponents. For example, Sultan Bayezid I entered a losing war against the world conqueror Timolenk in the Battle of Ankara in which the Ottoman Empire almost fell. If Tamerlane had not taken into account the factors of common origin with the Ottomans, the existence of the Ottoman dynasty would not have continued. In 1683, the Ottoman Empire fought a losing war against the Holy League, losing large areas of Europe. In 1768, Sultan Mustafa III declared war against Tsarism, which led to huge losses. In 1877, the Ottoman Empire fought a losing war against the Russian/Balkan alliance, as a result of which it lost large areas in the Balkan region. The Ottoman Empire in the Middle East was also involved in losing or costly wars with the Safavid Empire and others. Therefore, one of the things that the great leader Ataturk sought to make a complete break with the Ottoman era was to emphasize achieving the principle of peace at home and abroad. The Ottoman Empire had a medieval character, where war and military expansion were considered an important source of legitimacy. Therefore, among the titles of the sultans was the title of conqueror. While leader Ataturk was aware of the importance of maintaining peace in the republic, he was a professional general who studied at the military college and achieved great military victories that amazed the world in World War I and the National War of Independence. Leader Ataturk believed that the development of the Turkish Republic depended on maintaining peace. Perhaps many do not know that Ataturk achieved great victories and many gains through diplomacy. Ataturk established a humanitarian charter that includes basic principles for achieving world peace. Thanks to Ataturk's philosophy of peace, Turkey achieved a long peace that lasted about 100 years, and we hope that it will continue throughout history. The Republic of Turkey can be considered the only country in the Middle East that has not been involved in real wars for a hundred years.

This is interesting but it does not talk about the importance Islam had on the Ogüz and makes it seem as if they were antagonistic with the religion. One can not underestimate the effect Islam had on their outlook and the vision it gave them for a greater unified khanate that would become the great Ottoman empire.

My ancestors had came with/within Ertuğrul's tribe and were replaced on upland territories of Belekoma (Belecik, later today Bilecik). Mixed with the local people of Bitynia who seem to be from Italian, Greek and Scandinavian origins. I had my DNA ancestry analysis made. The result says that I have Siberian, Central Asian, West Asian (I read this as Oghuz) in a big share, Ashkenaz, Italian, Greek and Scandinavian ethnicities. Also benefiting from this analysis (Ashkenazi-Khazar share is over 6%) and physical appearances of Ottoman family and my family members I think Ertuğrul's tribe possibly coming from Oghuz land very close to Khazars who had close relationships with Jews. In a discussion I made with an Ottoman historian, he said that is possible. After the collapse of Khazar, as some tribes went North Blacksea territories, the Oghuz tribes in Khazar stayed in their lands for a certain period and then were pushed by Mongols to Anatolia. Kayı is a noble tribe of Oghuz. Not only Ottomans said that they are Kayı, founders of Bulgaria had also claimed that they were from Kayı tribe and used Kayı tamgha.

I couldn't see in this video and on the comments. Ertuğrul Ghazi and his army were ran away from war against Genghis Khan and his army. Ertuğrul Ghazi and his family and army in short "beylik" migrated to Anatolia. That's the begin of the tragicomedy, Ertuğrul ran away from war and his son create a own state then it become a The Great State. We usually say Ottoman State to Ottoman Empire. Ottoman just a normal state from Osman to Murad II. Mehmet The Conqueror when 11 years old he took to throne from Murad II. When 13 years old, he gave back his father. When The Conqueror 18-19 years old took to throne back. he conquest Istanbul at 21 years old. He was said I'm the Emperor, I'm The Conqueror and my state is a kingdom right now. After this moment They said Devlet-i Aliyye (The Great State or The Elite State, I'm not sure about the English equivalent).

Nearly all dynasties suggest that they have noble origin. In historical views, Ottoman and other Turkic dynasties for rights of establised and ruled of the state; they have descent from Modu Chanyu who was greatest ruler of Xiongnu Confederation and he was forced to Han Empire paying annual tribute to Xiongnu. In Steppe tradition, giving annual tribute is a sign of vassalage. If not descent from him but descent from Genghis Khan is acceptable for ruled Turkic state. Ottoman was not from Genghis Khan but they argue that descent from Kayı tribe whose descent from Modu Chanyu. In historical views, truth of this claims is very doubtful. If genetics know that Y DNA line of Ottoman Dynasty, its huge chance of solve of their paternal origin.

If you're referring to the Netflix show Rise of Empires: Ottomans. It's very inaccurate. Especially the depiction of Mehmed II. In the show he acts like a bratty child who almost failed to conquer Constantinople, while in real life he was very smart, well spoken and wise. Also the depiction of the pirate guy Giovanni is completely false. He was a scumbag traitor, who in the end even betrayed the Byzantines. His own family even disowned him. Also no emperor would ever tell a scumbag pirate "My Empire is in your hands" people shit on the Byzantines a lot, but Konstantinos XI was a strong, great Emperor. He would've never said that.

The father of I. Osman was ERTUGRUL. Majkun father's name was EDEBALI. The HUN-garian Árpád Khan (Kende, Kündüm) father was Álmos Khan, living int the IX. century. His grandfather (mother's father) name was EDEBALI (in latin: Eun-EDUBELI-ani). His mother name was Emese and her mythic lover was the SAINT TUGRUL BIRD (compare it with the XIII. century Osman legend). Álmos Khan from TUGRUL HOUSE and the Árpád Dinasty had the Sword of Truth owned by the great Atilla the Hun. According to the archeogenetical research of Dr. Miklós Kásler, our first king dynasty the House of Árpád was founded 4,500 years ago in Baktria, as TUGRUL DINASTY, what means not only a direct connection with Atilla the Hun, but possibly with the Seljuk-Turkoman I.Tugrul and I.Osman, too. In addition are the exchange of letters between Beyazıt & Timur, where Timur roughly writes 'We know well who you are, your forefathers - of their true origin'. I mean no offense or disrespect, since modern Turks have every right to feel proud of their history, just like any nation. However, one apparent problem is the unsubstantiated path tracing the "origins" of Turks, where facts are often presented without a hint of credible academic reference and in the absence of historical evidence (literature) or "hard" archaeologic proof (excavations). Orphan Asian tribal mythology along with ancient Mesopotamian civilizations are often connected ad hoc, like "dots", while reductio ad absurdum conclusions are perpetuated over the web, creating bed-time stories with a pinch (...or more!) of nationalism. This, may be good for Netflix or Hollywood, but it is not "history".

I appreciate your feedback. This video about the Ottomans has however nothing to do with Mesopotamian civilizations, nor has any part of Turkic Mythology been "made up" or for whatever reason or been connected to other religions/systems of faith. The "hard" proof can in fact be given, as - I have said that somewhere else - there have been Ancient Turkic runic symbols been found in the tomb/mausoleum of Ertugrul's (the guy in question here) wisemen. Where the typical Ottoman-fan thinks of the dynasty as being purely 100% Islamic from the start, the actual early Ottomans were still somewhat followers of their forefathers' faith. This in turn has colorized the connection between the Ottoman, but also many other Turkic dynasties in Anatolia with the Oguz Turks of Central Asia. Further proof can be found in the contemporary letters, decrees and books written mostly by Persian, Arab and Armenian scholars during and after the arrival of the Seljuk Dynasty in the Near East, where their actual origin of Central Asia has also been stressed. Furthermore, there has been substantial analyses by modern scholars such as Peter B. Golden, so I would recommend you checking out his books for further information. They are availible on Amazon and while being a work of academia, are quite readable by any layman. Greetings to Greece.

@@user-if9cq8wt9q Yes, of course. The Ottomans began in very small numbers, I agree with you. And the "devshirme" system in the Balkans is of course also well known. But my initial point was, that not even all TURKS had been Muslims at that point. The Ottomans' rise to power also came with the descruction of other Turkish states, the so called Anatolian Beyliks. And while most of them had converted to the Islamic faith, they actually kept a lot of their old pre-Islamic Turkic traditions. With the domination of Anatolia by the Ottomans, this mostly vanished. The larger the Ottoman Empire grew, the more religious did the Sultans of the Empire become. It sounds strange, because being ruler of a world empire that stretches across three continents, you would think that they tried to appeal to all cultures within their sphere of influence. But alas, they had both forgotten their own past, and at the same time tried to construct a new "culture" called Ottoman.

Certainly they were on a cultural. I meant that genetically, they used to be Turkic and later from Balkan lands. But from the 16th century on, the Sultans took the title of Caliph from the Mamluks (Selim I. did it first) and therefore did not see themselves as "Turks" anymore, which was an insult for some elites of the Ottoman Empire, but as world emperors. The language was different, but literally nobody in the streets in Istanbul or elsewhere spoke "Ottoman" - they either spoke Turkish or Greek. But the sultans saw themselves above them. Hence why they also included a lot of people from different cultural backgrounds into the administration, the military and so on. It was to diversify the Elites, and at the same time keep rebellions down (which mostly were initiated by Turks in Anatolia). But, the "core peoples" within the Empire who lived in modern-day Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, were just that. Africans were being sold as slaves to the Empire - the slave trade had already started with the Seljuks, mind you - the Kurds were living (mostly) autonomously in the South-Eastern part of Turkey in tribes, the Turkmen being their neighbors and active in the army. Persian was culturally influential, and Arabs of course were the main ethnic group of Ottoman Middle East. What I wanted to express was that all of these people were living in the empire, yes. But they did not have equal influence over the rulers, who ever indeed very European-oriented which coincides with their lineage. That is why from the very beginning, they took the title "Emperor of Rum". A certain ancient city in Anatolia was even renamed toKayseri, from "Kayser-i Rum" which means Caesar of the Romans.

The ottoman sultans always preserved the turkic heritage.
@KhansDen
@KhansDen 2 жыл бұрын
@@fadu3205 No, where do you get this information from? There was no Ottoman citizenship prior to the 19th century. Hell, the family did not even call their state "Ottoman" but "Devlet-i Aliye", the sublime state. The term Ottoman is an invention in order to differentiate the Ottoman dynasty from other Turkic states in history, as was the case with the Gokturks. But there is a big difference between the Gokturks and the Ottomans: the latter did not care about Turkic identities. And while the Ottoman Empire was "lovingly" called "Turkish Empire" by many in Europe, its leaders called themselves anything but Turk. Where did the biggest rebellions take place during the 15th and 16th centuries? In Anatolia, by the Turkish population. The Ottomans did not forget that. And while the language they were speaking on a daily basis was Turkish, with Persian influence, they claimed be heirs to the Roman Empire and the Caliphate of the Arabs. Where did any Turkish empire come into play here? Except for a few local names with respect to the long-gone beyliks, like Karaman, the Ottomans absolutely did not "preserve" Turkic heritage. Especially in their last phase in the 19th century, even while Turkish national feelings were growing among the Elites and even the rural population, the Ottoman Sultans gave their sons Arabic names, and foreigners more and more capacities for the incoming occupation of former Ottoman territory. Only with the rise of the Young Turks did the Turkic identity make a return on the political stage and only then was the Turkish identity actually emphasized towards the foreign powers. But between the 16th and 19th centuries, that simply was not the case.

According to historical sources, Turkish-Malay relations started when the Malay Sultan Ahmed Shah requested military aid from the Ottoman Empire after the Sultanate of Malacca, which was established on the Malay Peninsula in 1400, was occupied by the Portuguese colonialists in 1511. With the military support of the Ottoman Empire, the Malays managed to take the peninsula from the Portuguese Empire for a short time, but Malay domination could not be achieved in the peninsula. In the Malacca region, the occupation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the British Empire after the Portuguese created an obstacle to the advancement of Turkish and Malay relations. After the collapse of the Malaka Sultanate, Turkish-Malay relations in the Ottoman period continued through the Johor Sultanate, which was established in 1528 in the south of the peninsula. The visits of Johor Sultan Abu Bakr to Istanbul in the 19th century constituted an important step for the Ottomans to establish close relations with the Malays. During his reign, Sultan II, who had a policy of increasing the influence of the Ottomans in Muslim communities in distant regions Abdulhamid formed friendships with Johor Sultan Abu Bakr, who visited Istanbul twice at that time. After the visits of the Sultan of Johor, II. Abdulhamid sent Rukiye and Hatice Hanım, who were well-educated concubines in his palace, to the Johor Sultanate in order to establish kinship ties between the Turks and the Malays. Descendants of Rukiye and Hatice Hanım, the members of the Johor dynasty played an important role in the establishment of Malaysia.
