so gist of this song is... children longing for their parents who are working in foreign countries to support and sustain their needs. workforce from the Philippines is known worldwide and they are called Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). most of us grow up without our parents and as you may have noticed in the MV, they are portraying said longing and sadness despite the fact they are able to celebrate birthdays and other holidays, get money and goods sent to them by their parents. it's a very sad and relevant song to us in the Philippines, that's mainly this sounds like a haunting lullaby filled with angst.

The "i love you" spelling seems to be an intentional pun perhaps to show appreciation as well to the subject of the song because the first part of the song is the Hiligaynon lullaby "Ili-ili" whose lyrics essentially asks a baby to go to sleep while their mom is out to buy bread. ILY ILY extends this lullaby to apply to the experiences of Filipino children and families separated from relatives who have to work abroad (Overseas Filipino Workers) to bring food on the table. They even had each of the members sing in each of their respective native Filipino languages and I believe this further drives home the point that this is a universal Filipino experience regardless of the region because labor is among the main exports of the country. Even within the archipelago itself, it's pretty common for more rural families to have a relative working away even from their own island. The song tackles various facets related to migrant work in the country such as: the frustration that an older child/relative left behind might feel when other family members, especially younger ones, cannot comprehend why their parents have to leave them to provide for their needs; the understanding that as the older child, you now have to take on the mantle of being a parent to your own siblings while also essentially being an orphaned child yourself; and the worry you have for your beloved parents who are in a place with different values and cultures where they are likely treated as second-class citizens (there have been multiple cases of OFWs who get beaten by their employers abroad or, worse, get sent home in a casket).

As for the language, yes, Tagalog is the main basis for the official "Filipino" but it is only one of the 8 major native languages and was not even the most spoken language until the national Filipino language was created in the 1950s (an attempt to standardize and create a universal language for the country; Tagalog was the language spoken in the capital and nearby provinces). There are more than 150-180 languages spoken in the country, many are sadly endangered as formal education and employment puts a premium on English and, barely, Tagalog-based Filipino. Thus, parents and teachers encourage English as one of, if not the primary, language that a child must learn (some schools even impose fines to children when they speak Tagalog outside of Filipino subject hours). These are languages because they are not mutually intelligible (eg. they have different vocabulary, different syntax/structure, or different meanings for the same words; they even had their own writing systems although made obsolete due to more than 3 centuries of colonization); when a Tagalog speaker who knows no other regional language hears, for example, Tomas singing in Bicolano in this song, they can only get context clues but not fully understand without the subs (although, many Filipinos from non-Tagalog speaking regions can understand basic Tagalog because standard Filipino is taught in school). This distinguishes them from dialects whose speakers can mostly understand each other despite some differences in how they speak, I personally think of this as akin to how American English speakers can understand British/Singaporean/Filipino English except these are not spoken within the same territory. Of course, the Philippine native languages also have dialects themselves (ex. Manila Tagalog-Quezon Tagalog-Batangas Tagalog, or Cebuano Bisaya-Davaoeño Bisaya). However, the line between dialect and language is a blurry one because a living language can adapt; hence, the frequent confusion.

This song is about parents who end up going abroad for work, so they're providing moeny for you to live, but you remain apart and lonely. That's why it starts like a weird lullaby. The Wish Bus performance for this is amazing. But yeah Alamat is amazing honestly you can't go wrong with any of their tracks. One of my particular favs is Kasmala which is their fck the colonizers track. It includes a lot of references to Filipino history, such as exhibiting Filipino natives in zoos.

Alamat members are from different part of the Philippines so they sang in their own languages here. There are over 180+ active languages in the PH. All of the alamat members speaks at least 3 languages, some more. What they speak is their regional languages, Tagalog, and then English.

You're right Tagalog is the main Language. English is the second language. But the Philippines has so many dialects. And also the language has a mixture of Spanish words.( Once upon a time the Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards.

Each of the Alamat members speaks their own "language." They are not dialects or regional variants of a main language. For example, Tagalog and Visayan are not mutually intelligible. Each has its own phonology, syntax, and grammar.

1:05 when you said it’s creepy. I feel you, the original song was used on one of the horror movies when I was a kid and i tried not to listen to the song. But I am wrong , this song gave a lot of meaning plus Alamat’s version is no longer giving me chills. 😊 Thank you for this reaction.

Main language is Filipino, & they sing in several philippine languages. Particularly in the song, they sang in their respective regional languages, Filipino/Tagalog (Mo & Lyka), Ilokano (Taneo), Pampango (Jao), Bicolano (Tomas), Bisaya (Alas) (cant recall if R-ji also sang in Waray or Bisaya) The song & MV tells different perspectives of children of parents who work abroad for a living, a living arrangement typical in the country due to lack of better work opportunities to some

try to react to thier ILY ILY wishbus performance, thier harmonies are hightlighted in there, and yeah they are singing different languages each member, and also feature an artist. also the song is a multi-genre (pop, ballad, kundiman, and rock) that is why it feels and sounds like a roller coaster.

Tagalog is the national language of the Philippines spoken by majority of Filipinos, mostly living in Luzon but there are hundreds of dialects spoken by different ethnic groups coming from the different regions of the country.
