Very nice looking radio. I used to have loads of fun back in the 1970s on CB. I know some people have no use for it but when you get in with the right group of people it is loads of FUN. I got out of radio in the 1980s but got my first HR-2510 around 1990 and boy did I have some fun with it. Still have a 2510 but the tx sounds a bit raspy for some reason. People can say what they want about CB but I sure miss those old days and wish the old "gang" was still around today. Good folks . . .

Hello. Yes I bought it here in the States used from a friend. I'm not familiar with any of the European radio business or sellers. Therefore I can't help with your pursuit of a 8001. Best advice I have is keep checking eBay, do web searches, ask European KZbinrs that have 8001 videos, check forums like Transmission 1..... I Hope you can find a nice example. That is a model I've never owned. I believe there could be more than one version/revision of the 8001 but I'm not sure. 73's Paul

@TheZeke1974 I do remember the quality control on the TS-5010's be very spotty back in the day when they were new. I can't say on the Alan 9001 because I don't remember them being largely available here in the U.S. Since they use the long discontinued MRF477 as the 5010's I would assume they were made in the same time period and likely came out of the same plant. Neither the Alan or the Emperors give the country of manufacture. I remember us joking about that back in the day.

@gforce4all No it depends on the amp. Some like an Ameritron AL-811 or most four transistor amps without a drive section can handle that input just fine. There is an internal ALC where you can set the radio at a lower output on SSB for a low drive amp.

Yes, I used to use a Turner Plus Three on my HR2510 at home and modified the radio by installing a foot switch plug on the back and I could put the Turner on "electronic" switching, lock the mic down and use the foot switch to key the radio. I didn't really need to do that but I thought it was cool at the time so sit at the desk and step on the foot switch to talk on the radio. The Turner Plus Three really made it sing, too. Used to have a 100' tower using a Antron 99 (now Solarcon I guess).

@262NagantRadios Thank's for the info.I was just wondering because i have a 5010 and I wanted to run it with a small 2 pill amp.I would have to get the pep down to around 2 or 3 watts.Don't know if the alc in these radios will drop that far.

It was bought used from a friend years ago. It's not for sale at this time and honestly I don't have plans to sell it anytime soon if ever. They have not been manufactured in many years but a small number of them and the Emperor TS-5010's pop up for sale on eBay and other websites. 73's Paul

@TheZeke1974 Sorry to hear that. Mine works great on AM with a Turner Super Sidekick. It's not blaring loud on AM but I get compliments on how clean and crisp it sounds.

@262NagantRadios Yeah it was a lemon. I will never own another. I have my late uncles HR 2510 and it works GREAT on BOTH AM and SSB! I had "Doc" in NY State rework the radio and he did a GREAT job!!!

@TheZeke1974 Might have been something wrong with yours because these radios and the TS-5010 are mostly a HR2510/President Lincoln with some differences is all. I find the ANL and NB aren't to great on my 9001 but other than that it works just as good and sounds the same on the air as my late version Lincoln and old version 2510, even on AM. 73's Paul

@toxatt2 They are nice rigs. I do wish the ANL and NB worked better on them.

For me the Lincoln & 2510's are because of their superior noise blanker. The 9001 & TS5010 share a fair amount of the same design as the 2510 series but the NB/ANL on my 9001 doesn't perform half as well as the NB on the Lincoln/2510. If I get very much buzzing, sizzling, & popping from the electrical grid I can't use the 9001 because it can't filter it out. The NB on my Lincoln will filter the vast majority of it out. If noise isn't an issue I like 9001 large display & better audio fidelity.

Thank you. I agree with you about it being a great hobby. Good local groups do help make is a better experience. Through the years the people/groups change & there are times when there aren't any groups on the air locally but it keeps changing with time. You can get into various DX groups as well. In the early 90's I had a 2510 as well. I have a President Lincoln now which is the export version of the 2510. It's my most used radio. Have you tried different mics with your 2510? 73's Paul

I would love to have one of these radio's under either branding but they're hard to find in good condition today, and when you do find'em in good condition people want *WAY* too much. When used radio's of this type start getting into the $250-300 price range you can put another hundred dollars to that and just buy a nice used amateur radio that has 100-watts output with a full duty-cycle transmitter and FULL HF band coverage.

Most will peak higher than 10 watts with that much carrier after some tweaking. Course as you already know what output is seen will depend on the measuring device being used.

I had one that was the Emp 5010. It worke great on SSB but it was a whimp on AM. The older Uniden 2510 will blow it totaly away in all areas of performance...........

@gforce4all I don't know if they will turn down that much and if they did I have a feeling they wouldn't sound right. What sort of amp requires only 2 or 3 watts?

Paul, were you able to buy that radio here in the states? If not where in Europe can someone begin to look? I'm interested in an Alan/Midland 8001. Thanks

Since your radio puts out over 30 watts on ssb does that mean you can't use an amp with it?
