As others have noted you really need to listen to all of side 2 as it ties together a whole story. The concept was based on Eric Wolfsons gambling addiction from when he and Parsons moved to Monaco to avoid the outrageous taxes in England.

Hi. Thank you for this reaction. This is a concept album, dealing with the danger and habits of gambling. The title track is actually a 5 piece suite starting with part one and finishing with part two, with a running time over 16 minutes. So after listening to the whole suite part two is an even more satisfying closer.

The whole album is a cautionary tale about gambling. "Theres a sign in the desert that lies to the west, where you can't tell the night from the sunlight..." is a reference to Las Vegas. In part one there is "and they hope it will make their lives easier, for God knows up 'til now it's been hard" but it is replaced with "and they hoped it would make their lives easier, but THE DOORWAY BEFORE THEM IS BARRED" in part two.

@@Chris-filosifer64 Hello and greetings from the beautiful Pacific NW (North Wet 💯🤣). I came across my own original 1976 vinyl copy of the "Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe" album the other. I got the chance to give it a listen and Orson Welles' narration is not on it. I have the remastered version with Welles' narration, as well. There are some subtle changes to the musical arrangements in the '87 version as well as additional post production enhancements that make the '87 remixed version a lot more interesting to listen to. I don't know if it made a difference, but I bought my copy in Glasgow, Scotland. I was raised in Ayrshire, Glasgow is just under an hour away by train. Perhaps the U.S. pressing was different than the U.K. That is quite often the case. I have literally hundreds of albums where the U.S version and the European version have different songs, have the songs in a different running order, etc. Maybe this is one of those? Some of their best work is in the rock opera or musical theater style, it has some of the best lyrics and melody. Chris Rainbow (RIP) had this gentleness to his voice that could turn forceful at the right moment, lulling you in with a soft sentiment, then hitting you with a hard truth, very dramatic. I especially like the brass and strings on the title track as well. This album did very well commercially, but it is not a fan favorite. The single "Time" of course is one of their greatest hits, but people buying the album based just on that song were probably disappointed, as Time is the only song that sounds like it does. There is a lot of disco going on, that turned a lot of FM rock radio stations off, but it did get them AM radio airplay. But of course mainstream radio had no idea how to pigeon-hole this band, so some stuff got played way too much, some never. Its always a very mixed experience, as the styles shift so wildly. "Games People Play" is such a pop hit, "Time" is such mellow gold like a mystical mantra, and "Snake Eyes" is a jazz rock tune. "I don't want to go home" has got that 70s funk. "Turn of a Friendly Card" is almost a hymn. A lot of bittersweet in this album, and a slightly sad overall theme, turns some people off, as it is not "good time music" even though it has a lot of uptempo beats mixed in. Sounds all over the place, and it is. Great guitar, both lead and rhythm and excellent piano passages throughout. Some people put forth that "The Gold Bug" is one of their absolute best instrumentals, despite it being mostly unknown. It does have everything the band is known for all in one, that beat, sax, killer bass line, chorus/orchestra, guitar solos. Its just not long enough, I guess.

Hmmm, sorry, but it was most definitely a fan favorite, and yet another concept album, this time about gambling, the human nature and the psyche that lead to the need (yes, the pun) to wager a bet, and it's brilliantly masked with a Medieval (as one person here put it) and mystical smoke and mirrors. Brilliants musicianship, excellent vocalists (Rainbow, Zakatek, Woolfson) and all of Alan Parsons musical sheen production, an APP masterpiece.

AT LAST!!! Only Parson's Pyramid album is better! Hadn't realized that you've seen Alan live, so great to know.. Now you know why I'm a 'fan'.....This is probably the most Renaissance of their works. That said, "In the Lap of the Gods", from Pyramid, is going to blow your minds. A good amount of APP is also reminiscent of Broadway. Each album has one love song or lament, and they are heartbreaking and beautiful. What a great way to start the day, opening my laptop and coming upon this--with Lex too! Third for me behind these is Gaudi, their final album, then I. Robiot, one song of which you have already reactied to..

This is a fantastic album. One of the best of APP. The truth is that all APP albums have a very high level, it is worth listening to them all. Especially the stage of the late Eric Woolfson who is the creator of this magic. For me the best of all is Freudiana, although this is signed with his own name, it is also fair that it is so.

Great reaction BUT you didn't do the entire Turn Of a Friendly Card Suite!! (on my CD it's one song) This is a multi-part song where every section perfectly segues into the other. The preceding song 'The Gold Bug' is an amazing instrumental. The whole album is a classic - spun regularly in my house!

Part 2 has darker lyrics as the addiction has set in. You have to do “Time”, which is a touching ballad. That was one of the two singles off this album (the other being “Games People Play”, which has a nice guitar solo). To me, that song was to AP Project what “I Won’t Hold You Back” was to Toto (on the Toto IV album). Both were quintessential ballads done extremely well.

If you don't listen to the entire album, at least check out the suite that is bracketed by the two-part title track. It puts everything into perspective. I once heard a radio interview with Parsons, who said the concept behind the album isn't just gambling but also taking risks. The gentle and beautiful song Time, he said, could be the thoughts of either a sailor or an astronaut embarking on a journey. "Goodbye, my, love, maybe for forever ..."

All the APP Albums are concept albums. They are all based on a theme, the first one Tale of Mystery and Imagination is based on Edgar Alan Poe and has wonderful voice overs from Orson Wells. I Robot is taken from Isaac Asimov stories and Pyramid is about the Pyramids of Gisa. One very interesting album is Freudiana which was to be a rock opera and was create by the other half of the APP who was Eric Woolfson who co wrote many songs and music for all the albums but creative differences split them but the Album is still classified at Woolfson/Parsons and was the 11th album. Eric and Alan went different ways after this due to third party trying to get the rights and Eric wanting to do musical theatre. After this Alan Parsons Project was renamed to simply "Alan Parsons", and has released a further six albums the last one in 2022 which have all been good.

Talking about Renaissance, there are a lot of reactions on KZbin on the song Adagio by Laura Fabian, and covers of it, but in early seventies the band Renaissance also recorded a song, Cold is Being, on the album Turn of the Cards, based upon the Adagio in G Minor by Tomas Albinoni (1671-1751). You could make a magic cards marathon with songs from Alan Parsons of the Turn of a Friendly Card album, the Renaissance song mentioned above, the Steve Hackett album Voyage of the Acolyte (great album, based on Tarot cards, I would suggest Shadow of the Hierophant or Star of Sirius) and Mike Batt's album Tarot Suite (I recommend Imbecile, Lady of the Dawn or Losing Your Way in the Rain).

Thanks NicknLex for the reaction, as much as ai like many artists and groups I can get nearly everything I want out of music by listening to the 'Master's' albums. The APP have done a number of concept albums, starting with the first album based on Edgar Allan Poe as you know, and you should definitely play or listen to the whole album of 'The Turn of a Freindly Card' (perhaps his best album although I love all of his albums). Another concept album is 'On Air' about flight. Again thank you for listening to the best Engineer/producer there is! One last sad note is the sad fact that Ian Bairnson the guitarist on most of his great albums passed away recently, and we can only be thankful that we can still listen to him playing onthese wonderful APP albums.

Alexia, there's a saying here in Yorkshire - 'Where there's muck, there's brass'. You reminded me of that! It translates as 'Where there's dirt, there's money!' This was a first time listen for me, and I thought it was beautiful. Thankyou for that. Andrew Powell and Ian Bairnson are legends within the Kate Bush cognoscenti xx
