Apollyon You can go to an observatory, and shine a laser at the retroreflective material that Apollo astronauts left on the moon. The laser will bounce off that, and back to Earth. According to your logic, the entire scientific community must be scamming us, and have done that for centuries. There are many space agencies around the globe. After his moon landing Alan Shepard mellowed considerably. Prior to Apollo 14, he was brittle and even nasty man. He insisted on being called "Admiral" after that appointment, and was only humble around the other six Mercury candidates. He did use his status in the astronaut office to undercut anyone else in getting a flight to the moon, particularly Gordon Cooper. Now Cooper had more or less screwed himself with his lacadaisical attitude, but it had been said "Shepard would run over his Grandmother to get a flight". Moving forward, Alan Shepard became very gracious after he retired and even generous as a historical figure. I met him at a conference, addressed him as "Admiral Shepard", and spent some pleasant time talking with him. He was a true American hero, a gutsy man, and a qualified choice for the first flight. We will likely not see other heroes like the Original Seven, all of whom are now memories.

Just about my first memory was of Apollo 8. Christmas 68 when I was 4 years old. It saddens me that we are now at a point in time when we are losing these early pioneers that inspired so many, and my children grew up never seeing space achievements on the pioneering scale of Mercury through to Apollo. Hopefully my grandchildren may see a return to the glory days but I'm not holding my breath. As Neil Armstrong said, "there is much left unfinished". We owe it to these great pioneers and to future generations to complete the job - all it takes is a little vision. And before anyone comments on cost, a study years ago found every 1$ spent on Apollo generated 17$ into the US economy, who's know what that return must be up to by now.

When I met Alan Shepard, he had mellowed greatly. Walking on the moon filled a need for him. He was brave, but he was rigid. In his prime, he was above everyone but his Mercury peers, and even then, he could be a vicious foe. He liked to be called "Admiral". He loved golf. I remember watching his entire flight on the gym floor of my school, on a single black & white television screen. Of the Original 7, Shepard commanded respect all the time, but each had "the Right Stuff".

That is too cool. Admiral Shepard was a true pioneer with nerves of steel. You had to have some big brass ones when most of the rockets blew up in those days. Glad he did get to go to the moon. But for Meniere's disease, he could have done one or two flights in Gemini. He was chief astronaut for Gemini but didn't get to fly. Remarkable man...

On June 17, 1994, at Space Camp in Titusville, there was a reception called "A Night with the Astronauts" to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. There were a dozen Apollo astronauts there, who each spoke for a few minutes during the dinner. They then remained to talk to the Space Camp guests in the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Alan Shepard was my favorite. For much of the evening he was surrounded by the kids, and answered each attendees questions like it was the first time he had ever been asked that question. What a wonderful gentleman! I know a local television station taped the evenings program. I wonder if anyone knows which one, or how to locate the video.

I got to serve this man at a movie theater once and pissed him off. I never miss a chance to tell this story. It was at a special showing of Apollo 13 for the NASA people in Pasadena TX. A really special showing, Ron Howard and Tom Hanks were running around and everything. All the astronauts were wearing a special pin on their suits so you could know who they were, which was a help because with so many shuttle astronauts then nobody knew who every one of them was. I worked in the theater and bullied my way into working the counter the NASA folks would be directed to, they had a special one. Btw I was an assistant manager, so I could float. Anyhow I'm looking out at the lines and I'm seeing gold pins and whatnot, but no faces I recognize, then holy cow theres Buzz Aldrin! Well he's across the lobby and it doesnt look like he's thirsty or anything. Damn. Then I see a younger astronaut looking with awe in a direction, and i look that way, and holy freaking smokes, ALAN SHEPARD! And nobody but me and this young astronaut recognizes him! Which I still wonder about, because all the NASA folks were all socializing and everything, all talking, how does Alan freakin Shepard sneak through a bunch of NASA people? Anywho, I elbow the girl at that register out of the way and up comes Alan Shepard and his wife. And btw, they were a really cute couple. Also by this time, the young astronaut saw what I did, and he did the same thing I did on his side, cut his way up and was standing next to the great man, trying to look for a chance to shake his hand. And we see each other here and kind of grin at one another, cause we were the only ones around it seemed like that knew who we were in the presence of, and out of mutual admiration for each other's brazen fanboy moves to get close to him. Anywho, the Shepards ordered a small pop corn and a coke to share, which I made them, and this is when I pissed off Alan Shepard. He went for his money and I told him sir your money is no good here, the movie company is taking care of this counter for all the NASA people. He didnt like this. I got the feeling that this is a man that wants to pay for his own coke and popcorn. I mean it was a pretty tense look for a sec there. So I tried to break the ice a bit with a little joke, "yes sir it's all free, you should have gotten a large!". Hey I was nervous, it was the best I could come up with. The gaze he have me as he walked off, whew. And the young astronaut just gave me a look like what a dumbass I was to ruin this, our short-lived camaraderie had come to an end. But anyways, i spoke to Alan Shepard and he spoke to me, which by any definition means I met the man. Even if I made an ass of myself. Still counts.

Gus died trying while slated to be first man on the moon, Wally (so unceremoniously ignored in that dumb movie) at least got to fly there. Only Al Shepard made it. I have so many mixed emotions in that. After all, it was only 9 or so years.

@@derekec Wally never flew there, sadly. Apollo 7 was just an Earth orbiting test of the Command Module. However, it was a very important flight and Wally remains the only mercury astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Wally could have stayed on longer if he wanted, and due to the normal astronaut rotation would probably have commanded Apollo 13.

Thanks for sharing this historic interview of Alan Shepard. We're very lucky to have this interview before his death. I found it very interesting hearing Shepard recall some of his experiences with JFK. JFK: "Hey Shepard, I gave you this medal from the ground up" when the medal was dropped during the presentation. On why Kennedy wanted to go to the Moon, Shepard said that it was not true that JFK made the announcement to go to the Moon because of the Bay of Pigs disaster and his decrease in popularity, but more because Kennedy was a space cadet and he was really interested in man going to the Moon.

My Master's Degree had a very strong engineering aspect almost following NASA to the letter. One of the many elements was to ALWAYS cast a wider net when troubleshooting an issue. For a car, that means you replace all the belts when 1 goes bad. Replace both headlights when one goes out. On a computer, it means performing a normal (uncomplicated) system cleanup to nip any problem at its root source. If I can't rip it off the car in the garage, it won't come off while on the road.

Shepard was on the moon for 33 hours. That’s close to a 2mSv exposure. The round trip is approximately 144 hours which is an additional 8.64mSv. This brings the total to 11mSv for apollo 14.A lethal dose is 8000mSv.

He took the head of a 5 iron I believe and attached it with tape or string to one of the poles used for digging. So it wasn't a regulation golf club but it was a real golf club head
