As far as Steven King being a hack goes, there was a period where I was reading anthologies of his lesser known stuff and it was honestly really bad. Like, atrociously bad. Main difference between Alan Wake and Stephen King though, is Steven King went "Eh, fuck it" and just kept writing stuff, some of which really landed with folks, while Alan gave in to the depression.
@johnrivers3813
@johnrivers3813 Жыл бұрын
From what I heard from an interview with Steven King is that everyday he has a set goal to write x amount of pages no matter what, awful or not. His ability to be able to put out subpar work and not define himself by it is what every creator should aspire to, it's way too easy to tie your self worth with the work you produce that a lot of creators get depressed when they make shit or hit a writers block.

That could be from one of 2 periods of his. The cocaine years, which are fairly self explanatory, or the Debt years, during which he released a bunch of stories he had previously written and deemed not good enough to publish in order to pay his medical bills.

Calling Mr. Door a Magic Black Person is literally correct, but questionable in terms of how the term is used. He's a person involved with the magical events in question (before Alan was ever involved) who is sort of drawn into Alan's storyline. He decides to go along with things for his own reasons. The implication that Alan CREATED a powerful magical black person to guide him is completely inaccurate.

regardless of how someone views the quality of Alan's writing, I just roll my eyes whenever people say Alan keeps making bad decisions. Like, duh.... Alan already wasn't in the best headspace at the start of the first game and he's been in the dark place for 13 years. Based on Saga's short time in there, you can see how much it turns people on themselves. Alan's probably more than a little crazy at this point. You can be frustrated with his decisions (i'm convinced the "rules" he keeps sticking to are his own concoction), but those choices being bad still play into the game narrative (just add it to the pile of meta)
@kylekillgannon
@kylekillgannon 11 ай бұрын
TO BE FAIR: The rules are more or less trial and error of him failing to draft an exit from the Dark Place for 13 years on what actually even is allowed to be channeled through the Dark Presence in the first place.
@Smonsequenses
@Smonsequenses 4 ай бұрын
@@kylekillgannon Mr Door in his last conversation with Alan Wake explicitly tells him that he is making things difficult for himself with all these rules. The very idea that there are rules outside of Wake's own mind that control what he can and cannot do is already the influence of the Dark Presence. So thinking that he needs to abide by these 'rules' is him already conceding power to the Dark Presence. Saga, on the other hand, finds the power in herself to deny that the story is changing reality, and keeps control of her own situation in that way. For Alan, in a way, the 'rules' are also what causes his writers block in the first place. After all, are there really 'rules' in writing? Does that make a good and creative story? Or are the best stories often created by people able to understand the rules for what they are and set them aside as they see fit?
@kylekillgannon
@kylekillgannon 4 ай бұрын
@@Smonsequenses In some ways yes. A story does have rules in the sense that things must happen to propel the narrative forward. In another sense you see in the story of Alan Wake 2 a lot of the rules he has are self imposed. A genre has to have a certain ending, a plot hook, or a trope. And the only way he breaks out of his creative rut is another voice stepping in to give an alternative. But also, he indeed had been trying to write his way out for the better part of those 13 years. And certain parts of how he had to write were based on things he came to know as true like he had to write about real people, but he could do whatever he wanted with them up to and including alter their entire lives like he did with Alex Casey and Saga Anderson. He's a God, but he's also bound by some physical laws in some way. He just has yet to fully understand them. The difference between him and Mr. Door being that Mr. Door doesn't have to fully worry about those said consequences because he isn't so concerned with what happens to others on his behalf.

9:08 reminds me of The Forgotten City, another time loop game in which you can get someone else to go do all the solutions you've discovered so that you can personally go handle something different. Was the first loop good? I played American Nightmare after the podcast and the writing took a nose dive. Even the in universe justification of why it's written this way feels like a excuse. It's forgivable crap, given the price and length it took to complete it, but it's still crap.

@@MoostachedSaiyanPrince It's a reference, but the main point of their post is even in Alan Wake 1, the Darkness gets power if the story written doesn't make sense for the story. A story needs stakes, logic, victims, drama, etc. And anytime Alan tries to bend the story to benefit himself or others in a way that doesn't make sense with the story, it allows the Darkness to come in like an editor and with its cold calculated logic take the story in the direction it wants instead.

@@AestheticGamer I'm well aware that Alan Wake needs the story to make sense to stop the darkness, and I wasn't arguing against that. My point was that the person I responded sounded like they weren't completely sure if the OP was joking, then explained why it wouldn't work if they weren't joking. My reply was to clarify that it absolutely was a joke, and to make it clear that it was not only a joke, but a reference to a joke in a TV show where a character had to use literature to battle a monster and save the world, much like Alan Wake is.

It is part of the lore. While the in-game scenarios itself was part of Night Springs shlock, the manuscript, radio and tv are a continuation of the lore. It's two years after Alan Wake 1. Barry became a producer to the Andersons. Scratch's physical body destroyed by Alan. The whole premise was a loop with Alice's project being an important key for Alan to defeat the Dark Presence. Okay but playing the old games does give you tons of little things for the ffxiv nier collab. Like visual references, musical references, fuck even attacks from One. The idea of the sleeping beauty giving birth thus technically birthing the watchers or some shit or completing their plan and killing the amalgum reference monster. Its a raid for nier fans. Prob not worth if you aren't already super in though but hey you read all this so play nier ig.

I get that a lot of people don't like it, but a convoluted, fucked up story being warped by a third-rate author who got popular with pulp fiction is pretty fucking funny to me. Like, the reason that they have to go through these ridiculous steps to try to solve the problem is that Alan wrote all this dumb shit into the plot to try and give himself a way out because he's not a good enough writer to strictly play by the Dark Place's rules and come out on top, and he keeps sucking real people into the nightmare because he's incapable of writing anything original.
@jormungandr147
@jormungandr147 Жыл бұрын
Thats not true he has to use real people because he explicitly can't just make up original stuff its one of the dark places rules he can't just make stuff appear he has to work with already established people and events and tweak them to work in his favor all while the dark place warps any plothole he makes against him AND all while still having writers block the dude is literally fighting against a deck stacked against him
@HandsFreeProductions

@@jormungandr147 Nope, that's just clearly not the case. It's made very clear that Alan Wake has no original ideas, dude, right from the beginning of the game with Alex Casey being a real FBI agent as well as a character in his pulp novels. He's never had a single original idea, so he can't create an original character.

@HandsFreeProductions
@HandsFreeProductions 2 ай бұрын
@@jormungandr147yes, ALAN can't create stuff out of thin air. ALAN is not a good writer. Yes, his writing has to have an internal consistency, but Alan being a shit writer is why he has to draw from reality. In both games, Alan is very clearly portrayed as an overdramatic one hit wonder with a poor understanding of actual writing principles. Alan is a hack, and that's why he can't beat the Darkness.

I've tried to play Alan Wake recently for a first time, since i was on a horror binge in October and picked up a bunch of games. While i wasn't particulary fan of a gameplay and ultimatelly dropped it, this game is fantastic. Alan is an embodyment of an asshole celebrity writer. Bothered by literally everything. He stormed out of a remote cabin, leaving his wife all alone, even tho she has a crippling fear of darkness. the only thing that i haven't seen is him stomping his foot, but i wouldn't be suprised if it happens somewhere in the game. Alan Wake 2 looks great and i am so glad they did live action stuff, which looked great in Control, which i also didn't played through for same reasons as Alan Wake. Those games are fascinating with their plots and presentation, i just really wish i could enjoy gameplay.

I personally have a couple of problem with AW2 The Saga sections because... why is she seemingly getting more screen-time and gameplay segments than Alan Wake? Why is she so uninteresting? This is like Dougie Jones if he was a wet sack of paper instead of a character. and the "Mind Palace" sections are busy-work with no work actually involved. You drag and drop items onto a board with no real thought to them on your part. They aren't even puzzles for you to solve just interacting with a filing cabinet and slapping things on a wall in the designated area, you're just doing stuff other than play the game. This is the most fart-sniffing Remedy has gotten away with while giving us less gameplay than before. I like the weird stuff and the Alan sections more/less, but everything else is bloated, tedious, and uninteresting.

I haven’t finished Alan Wake 2 yet, but I have to assume Saga Anderson exists because we are getting this sequel 13 years later and not 2 years later. They can’t expect players everyone who plays part 2 to be familiar with the original game so they had to make an entry point character who gets the lore explained to her

i didn't played AW1 and watched some playthoughs of AW2 very casually but for what i understood the focus on Saga was because she was Alan's/scratch's literal plot device come to life to help them get out of the place they where trapped, she has some traits and backgrounds but they seem to be there to move "her script" rather than making you care for her. With Alan's section basically being about Saga's script being written

This is more you just didn't click with her then she's not interesting or got more episodes then wake (he literally has one more wake 10 vs his 9) since she's literally his means of escape the mind palace is a crime board your supposed to engage with the mystery and study it not just slap it on and call it a day figuring out the mystery like a cop studying a case IS the gameplay it just might not be the gameplay you want

I got to the part just after the Thorton and Mulligan fight and then gave up and deleted the game... I couldn't play it anymore, it was terrible and unbearable. I LOVED Control (played it multiple times and got the Platinum Trophy) and liked the first Alan Wake game, however I only played the PS5 remastered version... But Alan Wake II is mind bogglingly terrible. 99% of the time be it story or where I was located physically in the game I was legit lost. And not in the fun way where I was having fun in Control of not knowing what was going on, but aware of the context of the story at all times. The multiple characters in multiple realties and how they go in loops of attempting to explain things... It didn't work for me at all. Combat was a joke and every single enemy was a bullet sponge to high hell. It's not like I didn't know the game was survival horror, but my god I was way more annoyed at the enemies then ever scared. Not to mention the game is so damn dark that I'll hear a Taken come at me, then after three hits I'm dead. How can I be scared if I never even know what happened? The puzzles were a nightmare, especially many of the cult stashes... I know they aren't mandatory, but I got to the point where I just said, "okay forget it, I'm just gonna KZbin everything" and the comments on so many videos were FULL of people doing, "How in the fuck was I supposed to figure that out?!" So it made me feel better that I wasn't alone in thinking that the puzzles (and boss fights) were just broken. I feel this game was made entirely for die hard fans or even just Remedy employees themselves. I also seriously feel like many of these parts were not actually play tested. I hope Remedy doesn't screw up Control 2 this bad...
