A few thoughts if I may: Mk4 2.0TDCi 2007-2009 had EU4 engines. You can tell these by looking at the plastic top engine cover as the dipstick and oil filler cap share the same cutout in the plastic cover, whereas they're separated on the EU5 engine. Also if you have the Convers+ instruments with the colour display, these have proper mechanical gauges for fuel and engine temperature (replaced by digital gauges on the EU5). The front grilles are mesh effect like the older MK3s. Same basic block and stuff as shown here, but no fuel vaporiser in the exhaust to block up (DPF regens were done purely by altering engine parameters). Also these engines (and the 2.2TDCi after 2009) came with Durashift automatic gearboxes which are proper torque-converter type and generally very reliable. I don't believe any had the active front grille mechanism either to get smashed up. If you want a 2.0 diesel auto then these are the years you probably want to look at but you will pay for it in fuel economy and road tax (£320/year IIRC) Mk4.5 diesels from 2010 had EU5 engines and these do have the vaporiser nozzles, active lower grille, etc. and both grilles are slatted. That's the car featured in this video. Ford also switched to the Poweshift dual-clutch gearbox and unless that's had regular documented oil and filter changes on the gearbox it can go expensively wrong when the clutch pack starts to disintegrate. You'll often find that Powershift equipped cars sell for less than manuals and there's no shortage of cars being advertised with gearbox faults. Thankfully the 2.2TDCi didn't use Powershift but retained the Durashift, and will actually be cheaper to tax (though not run) than the 2009 2.0 TDCi auto, though they're nowhere near as common. Finally on all the PSA engines, a loud clacking or knocking noise at idle and low revs, especially from the timing belt end, can simply be a weak auxiliary belt tensioner which you'll see moving back and forth. Replacing this will quiet the engine for a while but the noise will eventually come back because the cause is a seized alternator pulley putting too much strain on the belt instead of allowing the rotor to freewheel. This can also damage the crank pulley if ignored.

After 90 mins , the AA chap pulled up , jumped in the car, started it and all good until I stepped in car park, it would start but revving erratic and then stall. Left car for two days , started and drove home without problem. Ive now lost faith in reliability , travel 60miles to work. Anyone have any ideas to fix ? No mechanical work done apart from changing battery in last 2k miles , car is well serviced. Thanks

Working as a roadside technician, I’ve been out to a few of these with EGR faults, but most of the drivers use there mondeos only use them for short trips and nipping to Morrisons one day a week. Most of them that I go out to are usually immobiliser faults or flat batteries. Good cars really. 👍🏼

Always enjoy your videos. Thanks Alan. I've had my mk 4 2009 2.0 litre diesel since 2014, currently on 137k. Have needed it for work, pre Covid. Mostly motorway miles. You are so right about changing the timing belt at 100k. I'm afraid I am that soldier - the most costly mistake when I delayed changing it until 113k. I can still hear the faint metallic clink the day it broke. Got it towed to the garage. A complete new valve set, the cylinders were 100% O.K. £2,200 for the rebuild. A sore one. If any consolation, it drives better than ever, almost like new. Take Alan's advice and get it changed well before Ford's recommended 125k. P.S. I still love driving my mk 4.

Before that I had a Mazda 6 with that 2.0 petrol engine - it’s what I learnt to service engines on - and it was great. @@shanginadildo Hi John. Im still driving the same 2013 Mk4 and its still been absolutely trouble free. A few little niggles - the gearbox selector and mechanisms fight me a little sometimes, but its like once a month at most, and Im found going round the clutch/gear system with a simple can of Silicone Lube. Seems to get it back to good again for another lot of months. For maintenance, I only use Ford Formula F oil, and change that twice a year. All filters (inc. fuel) once a year. Everyone and their dog will have a cast iron opinion on what oil to use for any car! But Ive used the Formula F, and havent had any problems, so who knows if its worth the extra cost or not, but I aint changing :) Good luck with the motor mate

Got a used mk 4.5 estate in 2017, top trim 2.0 tdci 120kW with PowerShift. At 110k km had the PowerShift replaced (it had trouble shifting and leaked oil) and have been happy with it since. Butter smooth. Sometimes it's slow at intersections especially if you move then brake then accelerate again (the Powershift struggles to understand what you want to do). The rear right door sometimes is hard to open, I tried lubricating the retention arm and the hinges but the problem persists. The harder you force it the more resistance it poses. Sometimes the DPF regen goes crazy and when idleing I see fuel consumption 3 times higher (2.4litres/h instead of 0.9) and blue smoke comes out from the underside of the car, both at the rear near the tailpipe and under the bonnet. This seems more common in the summer, but it may have to do with poor diesel quality. The Ford dealer/service is not sure what the issue might be, suggestion are welcome. Minor complaints are: hard suspensions on potholes (sport version on 19 alloys), but on the motorway they are perfect Minor rattle from inside the dashboard/glovebox at idle (i'd like it fixed but can't trace it, suggestions welcome) Faint squeaking from rear wheels (only heard when the windows are down) The interiors are very nice, got the brown leather seats with black piping, a nice place to be indeed and still gets compliments. "Calming" is true, have had a lot of friends and family quietly fall asleep on long trips. As the driver, I can say I get to destination fresh and rested no matter the distance.

Just out of interest, how much was the power shift replacement cost?
@TheNasaDude
@TheNasaDude Ай бұрын
@mart34 I strong armed the official Ford service down to 4.5k € total, it was done back in 2019. Not cheap by any means, but I would not want another car except maybe a mk5. My mk 4.5 is still going strong. I'll drive it into the ground and then try to make it electric, or switch to some electric if and when it will give up the ghost The blue smoke problem was just the particulate filter, I was traveling regularly on a short route that ended with a few minutes of highway. The car would start the regen and not be done when I got to destination, hence the smoke. I learned to let it do its thing and switch it off when idle consumption goes back down to normal. The rear door got easier with use and doesn't lock up as often. When it does, you just swing it back and forth a few centimeters and it always opens. The rattle from the dashboard is still there, I should just dismount the head unit and velcro all the cables I find inside. Edit: the faint squeaking comes from worn out brake pads, but Ford service told me there's still meat on them for at least one service interval (20k km). Fuel consumption got betrer after a tyre alignment, I also stick to a fuel supplier with good quality, additives as default and ok prices All in all still a good car that gets compliments, I think it will last for many years to come

@TheNasaDude Not surprised on the cost. When I bought my 2010 plate mondeo back in 2016, it had just had a transmission replacement by previous owner at a 3.5K GBP cost. I have the transmission oil changed every 3 years now, at about 400 GBP each time.

Few less ponies than the Focus ST due to the exhaust system. 220PS or 217BHP on the Mondeo. I have the Titanium X Sport and I would consider the Mk4 in this video a 4.5! The face-lift in 2010 lost the 2.5T for a 2.0 EcoBoost but more importantly lost the manual transmission in favour of PowerShift, so I opted for the 2009 TXS 2.5T

Hi Alan, thanks for all your great videos. My experience, Mondeo MK4 2.0 Ecoboost 2010 auto, between 53k and 70k miles I have had... Gearbox oil change £350, broken rear spring, failed throttle body, failed water filler bottle cap, rear trailing arm bushes, failed cruise control buttons, failed adaptive head light leveller (new head light £300-£500). Low battery warning is hyper sensitive and claims battery is flat all the time when it isn't. My rear pads seem to be lasting for ever but I guess I am gentle on the brakes. Gearbox is great apart from one massive issue, under certain circumstances there can be a long delay engaging 1st gear which is a complete nightmare pulling out of junctions as it catches you out when least expecting it. I so loved my 2001 Mk3 V6 Ghia X, the steering was just so sharp and precise and the MK4 is like steering a boat in comparison.

Our 2012 Titanium has been fantastic. Coming from a Vectra which was a complete pile of crap, it has been absolutely bomb proof. We've done the usual like the timing belt, clutch and flywheel and new starter motor - but aside from that it's been superb. I suspect the suspension arms need changing all round as it's feeling a bit twitchy now, but for a 9 year old car with 170k miles that's par for the course IMO. Great overview 👍

Thanks Alan. A few things to add. I bought my Mk4 Duratec 2.0 at 80k miles. Heavy leak out of right hand driveshaft gear box opening. Inner driveshaft half had to be replaced, it ripped the gear box seal apart over and over again. Car maintained for 9 years by Ford dealer, no one noticed the leakage. Full service history worth nothing at all. Also shock absorbers were at the end all around at the same 80k miles. Bilstein B6 subsequently cured it well. Right rear spring broke at 100k. Car made a terribly mettalish sound from right rear when going over road bumps shortly before it broke. Spring finally snapped with a loud TANG sound through a 5 mile per hour curve. Oil leakage in the duratec 4th cylinder sparkplug hole, which is not totally cured after a valve cover gasket change. Valve cover might be deformed. Interior is calming indeed, most relaxing car ever. Largest short coming: there should be an old Ford V6 in it 😄😄

Good video! The early car’s do now rust however. Rear of the sills where they get battered by stones is a hot spot. Doors etc are fine however. Regarding the engines. The 2.0 FFV is the flex fuel car. They can run E85 without issue. The 2.5 is its V6z it’s the Volvo 2.5 Turbo 5 pot, same as the Focus ST. They are very rare however. I have owned one for 6 years, with it now on 192,000 miles. Your channel has always been informative. I’ve just used your video and Meyle’s to do the Powershift oil change. Fuel filter is a nightmare on early 2.0 TDCIs. Whoever didn’t fit a lift pump onto these needs their heads looking into. Always enjoy how informative your channel is

Would say the Mk4 was probably the best all round Mondeo. But the Mk5 is definitely the best looking, absolutely love the menacing evil looking front end stands out in the car park especially in darker colours with the black honeycomb grille and ST-line bodykit, I don't regret upgrading and both my Mk4s and Mk5 have been bulletproof.

Hello Allan Has a 201 Mondeo mk4 with a 2.o TDCI and poweshift. My challenge, however, lies in the back of the car, where it crbs around corners, and has changed shock absorbers without success. On the lift I have tried to find the fault, but without success. Even with breakerbars I can not trigger the error, do you have an idea if the bet is swaybar bushings., Or - Thanks

Useful video thanks .. I have a Mk4 2.2 Tit X, 158k and have intermittent cruise problem, mostly works ok, but you never know. Also just had the turbo hose split which I’ve had with both mk3’s I’ve owned. Now have an issue with heated seats, going to change switch block. Other than that, I’m most impressed with the car still, but it does go through 235/40/18 tyres at a pace!

I had the turbo hose split on my mk2 Focus, easily fixed. I've noticed cruise control issues too on my Mondeo (sometimes it doesn't turn on, sometimes it activates the limiter instead of the ACC). I think it's just the button block on the steering wheel. About tyre longevity, I've had good luck with Nokian summer tyres on the Focus (17 inches) and Vredestein all-season on the Mondeo (19 inches)

Regarding those PCM's, I watched a video a while ago where some guy suggest's that there's a problem with the windscreen washer pump leaking and each time you use it, water runs down the pump's wiring and eventually makes it to the PCM which causes corrosion and all sorts of weird problems. A bit bizarre but also feasible. Great video Alan, I've owned a mk1,2,3 and am currently loving my 61 plate mk4.

Wondering if this could also be my problem? Sometimes when driving along the traction control light and abs light will come on briefly and sometimes the engine will cut out and the instrument cluster will keep flicking on and off. Another time I couldn't even turn my ignition off so I couldn't lock my car. I'm wondering if it could be a faulty bcm? I've pulled the wires from it and have noticed a little bit of rust on some of the pins on the green connector so I'm guessing there has been some water ingress. I'm wondering weather I should get a second hand bcm and get it programmed and swap it out. Any thoughts???

First , I’d like to say , Monica , YOU ROCK ! 💕 . Love your water cannon antics . They’re always welcome just as you are ❤️ . Alan , although I’ll never see the Mondeo in the United States , I want to say that’s a pity . If there were a left hand drive version , I would so want to own one . Unfortunately diesel fuel,is expensive here since it’s not the common use fuel for automobiles , only heavier trucks ( lorries ) and tractor trailers for commerce . A diesel in a commuter car would absolutely be a blessing since the engines are generally more durable , if of course built well . Many are , except the ones that General Motors built in the early 1980’s for mid size cars which were nothing short of a gasoline ( petrol ) conversion . I so wish I could have one of these Mondeo ‘s with the six speed for everyday use . The only draw back would of course be I’ll probably rack up speeding tickets since I don’t like cruising in a lower gear . I make use of the lower power band in a higher gear of which the Diesel engine was made for . Maybe we do have good cars in the unites states , in some folks opinion but I’ll say with cars like the Mondeo , the British have what I consider , excellent commuter cars . Unfortunately , we in the US drive automatic transmission . While that’s not a bad thing , the average driver in a country in Europe and the British isle know that manual transmission is more controllable on roadways . Our problem is stop and go traffic and lack of patience . Manual transmission is not favorable under those circumstances . Yes , there is traffic in your country but we are just known for it here . Not much fun therefore neither is there enjoyment for driving manual transmission in our cities . If you were here , I’d challenge you to find an average person who still remembers or even knows how to drive manual transmission anymore . Anyone younger than I (58) either hasn’t driven manual in ions or never cared to learn . I’ll bet however that if the Mondeo were available in the US , there would be followers , to a degree . Just the smartness and simplicity of the Mondeo would prompt a second look from some people and possibly an interest . Too bad people here are so lazy and couldn’t fathom learning , much less driving manual transmission . Diesel fuel prices aside , a gasoline engine version could make it here , but again , it would have to be automatic transmission 😢. The closing of the video was epic . Oh Monica , dear girl , your lovely , fun , and a good sport . It would be a treat to be in your presence . Hey , you both are fun . Great channel ! Bang on ! ✌🏻

I had a Mk4 2008 2.0 TDCi Auto that replaced another HDi powered vehicle, a Peugeot Expert van... I figured I didn't need a van with a boot that big. Boot was so big I once put a tumble dryer in the back without even so much as removing the parcel shelf. I just plonked it in and shut the tailgate 😎 I had about 70kg of tools and spares in the back everywhere I went, drove it hard from 70k miles to 130k miles over 3 years, EN08PKK seems to be still running in the next owners hands with over 200k on the clock. A great car, huge and comfy and still handled well for what it was. I had a Titanium, no parking sensors but I managed to park it in London sometimes with the driver's door open for a better view when reversing. The power folding mirrors were used regularly in London side streets as it was a wide car. Fuel economy with the auto box ("Durashift Aisin torque converter unit) was poor, averaged 33mpg over ownership when the HDi 110 Peugeot expert averaged 38 over 40.000 miles, performance was OK, never felt underpowered but was certainly not fast. You forgot to mention another common issue which may have only affected certain batches of pre facelift whereby faulty power steering pumps pushed metal debris through the system causing the mesh filter on the reservoir to get clogged and restrict flow, further compounding the problem, accompanied by whining and moaning. Some people were able to resolve the issue (at least temporarily) by changing the fluid and fitting a new reservoir/filter unit but ultimately the pumps were on their way out. I never experienced this but a friend did. I had zero issues apart from a slight pulsating effect on hard acceleration which with some googling turned out to be the VNT solenoid, brown unit on the right side of the engine, replaced it in five minutes for £10 or £20 parts cost. I also had a complete gearbox failure which left me stranded in France but that was the fault of Ford who put the wrong oil in it, that's another story for another day. The fuel filter on the pre facelift Euro IV was under rear of the car and a bit of a pain to do on the driveway, also needed bleeding with a hand pump from the engine bay which I luckily researched before doing, it seems many people assume a lift pump in the tank and then struggle to get it going... On the plus side the pre facelift had the oil filter directly on the tip of the engine bay at the front so you don't need that silly Crank shaped tool to get to it which I had the misfortune of experiencing on a mk3 Focus that I later had.

As a Mk4 Mondeo owner, dead chuffed to hear an experienced mechanic highlight so few issues with these cars. So far the only issues I've had which were really easy fixes: Water in the boot - caused by the aerial mount and wiring grommets in the hatch. Squirt of sealant around each location and water ingress was fixed. Low battery voltage - Mondeo has a neutral terminal that connects to the bodywork near the battery location. Pop the connection off the bodywork and give it a good clean. Corrosion was causing resistance and a surprising amount of heat around the bodywork where the terminal is. Speakers - The lower-end speakers perished and made a horrible buzzing noise. Got a set of 2nd hand set of 4 Titanium X speakers for £25 for an easy plug&play upgrade. And that's it so far! I've had my Mondeo since February 2021 and I've been really happy with it.

You forgot the 2.5 5 pot engine from Volvo. They are pretty rare. Goes like stink and are a well proven engine. My Mk3 had the 1.8 125hp Duratec HE engine. Pretty good engine that lasted me well with no oil or water consumtion at all. But it was a bit thirsty. I did remove the flaps on mine and epoxy'd the holdes where the rod go. No problem. But it did lack a bit torque low down, but it got more responsive. And the EGR valve can get stuck, like on mine. I cleaned it up and fitted a blocking plate. No problems after, not even a check engine light because the egr was blocked. When the egr became stuck, it felt like driving on top of a wave at sea when driving along with steady throttle input. Good video Alan and say hello to Monica :-)

I have a 2011 Mondeo Zetec 2.0 tdci (105k miles)and it's great, been stealth camping in it a few times. 2 year ago I did a 1541 mile trip round Scotland in 11 days, car never missed a beat and this july, another 900 miles in 4 days. I even have a Thetford 365 porta loo between the front passenger seat and rear seats 😁 I'm looking to part ex it for a van to convert to a camper but not found anything in my budget to warrant losing this wonderful car. I can backup what Alan said about coolant loss, had this car 3yr 1 month and never had to even top up the water, no drips, nothing. Apart from general wear and tear, tires, brakes I've only had one annoying problem and that was water in the rear boot/seats area. It turned out the the water was getting in through the tailgate wire loom rubber covers on the back of the chassis and running down the inside and the seats soaking the water up. I fixed it by simply cleaning and siliconing the around rubber covers. I wish I could afford to run a car and van but can't. Great video Alan, thank you 👍

The best trouble-free engine in mk4 is 2.0 liter 107kw, same engine from mk3. I have over 400k km on clock on one mk3 with this engine, the only repair I did was cleaning egr. I change oil every 8k km. It still runs smoothly, the timing chain is still quiet, but I plan to change it soon just for case. Ford says the timing chain is recommended to control in 300k km. I guess Ford discontinued this engine in 2012 so you can still buy this engine in facelifted mk4.

We have had a 2009 Mk4 Mondeo 2.3 Zetec for over 10 yrs. It has 237000kms on the clock. The following are what we have had repair/ replace in that time: - 2 x power steering pumps - 1 x fuel pump in tank - 1 x rear main oil seal - 1 x battery every 3 years Rear tyre rotations a must to keep wear even. - 2 sets of brake pads. - regular services We live in Melbourne-Australia and have been to Adelaide in it and up to Brisbane, no worries at all. Good car.
