I do like your videos, I have been repairing my own cars since I started driving in the '50s and they have got progressively more difficult until the modern stuff like that Mondeo engine is ridiculous. I looked at your Ford/Citroen cambelt change and although you had it out of the car, it still looks doable. I have two C5's with that engines which are coming up due for replacement belts. I have done several XUD and 8 valve Hdi belts so with your help I think I should be able to manage these. I changed the thermostat/ housing on one of them, that was a pig of a job. You have a very good way of explaining things. Thanks.

That's one of those two stage pumps, there should be a sprung mechanism that pushes the impeller housing off centre to increase the displacement at higher revs. The VAG diesel in my car uses a similar setup with a high rpm mode that kicks in at 3k. Thankfully engine blow-ups are very rare these days, unlike thirty or forty years ago, but of course they still happen. The complexity of modern engines makes a write-off quite likely in terms of uneconomic repair. Car only worth a few grand and garage labour costs for several days work plus expensive parts means you might as well scrap the vehicle. All a bit different to when I worked on cars in the 70s and you could get a full or short rebuilt Ford or BMC engine for a fraction of the value of the car and you could usually get the job done in a day sometimes two at the most. Labour nowhere near as high as it is now - £80 to £150+ per hour depending where you go - independant or main dealer. Nice video, enjoyed it very much.

With the wear on the chain tensioner guides (and broken spring on another one if memory serves correctly from a previous vid) and the oil pump you have to suspect a design life of maybe 300k km (186k miles ) ? So basically if you want to take the engine over 200k miles- as was mentioned for this one- then said items have to be considered consumables but do costs stack up? Probably cheaper swapping in another engine.

I've never liked the idea of a 30 in any high compression turbo engines, especially diesels. Turns to piss pretty quickly and I find it highlights any wear points in the engine. It would be interesting to do an experiment where you run just one of these on 5w40 and see if certain components hold up better. The timing chain guides for one would hold up much better imo, as they seem to be a common wear point. Seems like to prevent mass carnage it might be wise at 200K to change the chain tensioner. Also, what service intervals do you use to change the oil? If its the ford 18K miles I'd say that is too long. I'll be having mine done every 12K. If it had an oil feed problem it will have not done the turbo bearings any good either. This all sounds like the issues BMW and VW had with their main chains with the extended service intervals.

hi michael, we use the ford supplied 0w/30 oil and replace it every 15k miles, which as these are taxis is around about every 3 months
@guffermeister4 жыл бұрын
In a taxi I guess 15k isn't too bad as its going to be basically running all day so doesn't have the temperature change of hot/cold which breaks down oils. I do wonder if prolonged stop -start sessions don't do the oil much good. Also depending on the running conditions another factor could be diesel in the oil from lots of normal DPF re-gens - I can imagine an urban taxi doing that a lot if the engine speeds are not maintained for a while. Difficult to get a measure of how often they'll do it. Airport runs wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah oil pump locked up and broke the chain and the body of the pump but how did it break the chain twice?🤔 Thanks for posting loved watching that, just glad I don't have to take a head of one 🙈😂😂😂

Not sure if this is the right place to ask a question but does this engine have a drain plug somewhere in the block to drain the coolant? I’ve got the one with bi-turbo (207 bhp) and want to flush the whole system.
@leexgx4 жыл бұрын
The metal filter on the turbo pipe should be removed as if that clogs up it will destroy the turbo due to lack of oil (only the oil filter should be doing the filtering as that's replaceable every 5-12k miles )
@Phantom03094 жыл бұрын
why didnt the engine shut off or go into a significant derate if it completely lost oil pressure?
@alan4x4 жыл бұрын
the engine would have been in low power mode...the engine won't switch off altogether or the driver would have no control

do you know channels like this with another models like Peugeot and Mercedes ?

Is this the same motor that is in my C5 Citroen 2.2 Diesel .?
@Roverturbo4 жыл бұрын
At what mileage do you change the oil?
@alan4x4 жыл бұрын
mk5 2 l diesel we use ford 0w/30 and change every 15000 miles...which in most cases is around every 3 months
@Roverturbo4 жыл бұрын
Alan Howatt do you think the interval is too long and should be sooner?
@tomaszknapik45634 жыл бұрын
Flippin heck that's quite long interval.. my mk4 get's new oil every 6-8k miles (Ford's Formula F 5W30)
@Roverturbo4 жыл бұрын
Tomasz Knapik common on modern engines. I never leave it that long on my cars. 10/12k /1 year max.

Top work! I would have repaired it instead of going for a second hand engine. You never know its history for sure. Or maybe in UK they don.t lie about mileage and overall engine history?
@bormisha4 жыл бұрын
Not sure for businesses, but private people purchasing a used engine from a business typically get an 1-2y warranty on it, if certain conditions on the engine installation are fulfilled. And it makes virtually no sense to buy a used engine without a warranty because the risk is too high.
@davem53334 жыл бұрын
I think you would be better off repairing that engine. You know its history and condition.

@petelattimer68084 жыл бұрын
ok so 2 questions. apart from the ancillaries, how much different is the basic engine from that fitted to the mk4? second, have you had any experience with the more modern 1.5 diesels? and if so are they not a little short on power/torque for the Mondeo?
@alan4x4 жыл бұрын
the mk5 2l engine looks very similar to the mk4 2l diesel but there are significant differences..cylinder head design and injector placement etc. i avoid the 1.5 diesel..it is definitely underpowered compared to the 2l and prone to head gasket issues

I had to watch this from behind the sofa!!

What year car was this from, for 200000 miles could be expected. Its when you get engines failing on low mileage is a worry, This guy loves taking things apart, interesting video, please take some more apart.

How many miles on the engine ?

So the meathead that was driving this ignored the oil light then? Shame. Did the mk4s suffer from the failing cam tensioner?
@alan4x4 жыл бұрын
yes the driver kept going...he did not know what low oil pressure dash warnings and rattling engine meant🤨 on the mk4 mondeo 2l diesel...i have never came across a single case of the tensioner failing or the plastic guides breaking and most of mk4 we have here are at around or above 300k miles
