LYRICS
Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen
Look at us rallying all our defenses
Look at us waging war in our bedroom
Look at us jumping ship in our dialogues
There is no difference in what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there
So why spend all our time in dressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause right here, our underneath
Look at us our form our cliques in our sandbox
Look at us micro kids with both our hearts blocked
Look at us turn away from all the rough spots
Look at dictatorship on my own block
There is no difference in what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there
So why spend all our time in dressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause right here, our underneath
How I've spun my wheels with carts before my horse
When shine on the outside springs from the root
Spotlight on these seeds of simpler reasons
This core, born into form, starts in our living room
There is no difference in what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there
So why spend all our time in dressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause right here, our underneath

the message of this song is that if you want to change the world, you have to change your own heart first. for example, if you're against war, then you need to eliminate war in your own life, in your own relationships. because what happens "underneath" shows up as "bigger symptoms out there." whatever you're against or for, make sure you embody it. that's the message of this song

I just cried watching this video. I just love how she made another sort of metaphor or comparison (precious illusions) with the message of the song. This time more sutil. I used to not like this video or song, I didn't get it. But I love it now. Its like this love anthem with long chorus her therapeutic voice to the rhythm of the heart. Genius. So explicit, yet not obvious. I love how explicit the heart and earth images are which led to a beautiful aesthetic of the video. Also how it ends with that critique of first love yourself then save the planet. I also love how she pushes him away then smiles at his picture on the phone and hugs him. No self love=no love=fight. Self love=love=make up. I love how she's not afraid of singing about real life stuff.

This is such a deep and meaningful song! I love the idea of Saving the Heart and the Earth! In the lead up to 2022 we need to do both especially Save the heart, tell all those haters and bullies to go away and stop self doubting yourself and questioning whether you are good enough because you are, stop those horrible feelings and defend yourself like Alanis is ripping down the posters!

Solid song. I think what she's saying is that we should strive to achieve what makes us happy, self actualization. No more "heart-blocking". We should stop "waging war" , "jumping ship" and steer that ship to a place where we will be content.

I love how I'll never get to the bottom of the lyrics completely or completely relate to it (in the sense of fights in unhappy marriage) but it will always magically have me drawn back to itself when I need to touch the untouched hurt part of myself and that of my own smallness and insignificance. the way she puts emphasis on words in a verse you wouldnt normally hear that done with makes this song special, the way she sings is just amazing. example - "There is no diiiiiff - er - uunnnce" like in no song every has that been sung that way, i remember the first few times i heard that i thought she said "there is no end for us" but nope shes just elongating how she sings one word, and she continues to do that for the entire chorus. its just crazy to me how different that is.

i remember still being in that space of the diehard fan wanting her to have the overdue massive comeback and the glamorous return (even though that was never what she wanted or was aiming for, and probably never going to happen for a 34yo woman in the pop music industry in 2008), and as much i loved this song instantly, i just wrote this video off like a cute little flyer taped to my wall... over a decade later, not having that stupid expectation, the message and the beauty of this visual really hits where it was meant to.

This song reminds of one Sunday afternoon, when me and my sister were playing in the living room and my father was sitting on the couch, right after buying this album and playing this song, reading a book. I don't know why that moment got stuck in my mind so much, but the song has a particular role in making me remember it, and I'll be forever glad to Alanis Morissette for making that possible. I have never had many chances to spend time with my father and I really miss him, even more so because he is alive and well, but there is no relationship between me and him, after all the years spent fighting over stupid stuff, only because my mother never respected him and I followed her example. Now we are both sad of how everything turned out and nobody can do anything about it. I've found the courage to tell him not long ago that I am sorry for how things turned out to be between us and he told me that it was never too late to be father and son. He is right, but after all those years, it is hard to create a bond. We both know it. AS a kid he was my Superman and I never appreciated it enough. It really is painful to think at what my life could be now if I had listened to him more and talked to him. Growing up without a father is something truly horrible.
