For those interested, Alanis wrote this about a clandestine sexual relationship she had with her producer Leslie Howe from ages of 14-19. This was her way of healing, writing this song.

A more detailed story: It is about Alanis' relationship with her former manager, Leslie Howe. Alanis was 14 and he was 29. He manipulating her into thinking that if she slept with him, she would become famous. It lasted until she was 19. The verses are told from Leslie's perspective while the chorus is from Alanis' perspective.
@NoOne-us9xv4 жыл бұрын
I've looked into this. I haven't seen any confirmation, from her or anyone else, that Leslie Howe is the subject of the song. In fact, I haven't even been able to find anything tangential. At best, some people have speculated about it, but I have yet to see anything remotely resembling a concrete link. If I'm being frank, I could very well see it being him. It sounds perfectly plausible, and I wouldn't be surprised. That said, if you don't have anything more than conjecture, that's a pretty serious allegation to be making.

Same here... I was a VERY sheltered 14-year old when this album came out (2002), and while I LOVED that album overall (and it holds up incredibly well, to tis day) - the lyrics to this particular just flew over my head, and while it's obviously a blessing that it wasn't something I could instantly relate to and understand back then... I'm also sad that I didn't understand what she was really trying to say. I also didn't have cable TV (and KZbin didn't exist until 2006, for any younger gens reading this lol), so I also didn't see the music video until Covid happened - which I'm sure would've opened my eyes a bit more to how dark the song actually was... but because I didn't see that, I just didn't "get" the song - in fact, I remember feeling weirded out about it because I took the song at face-value and thought she was singing from her own pov about a relationship with a younger man (I didn't pick up on the p*do implications in the song, so I thought she was singing about some younger man in a more... really creepy, shallow, immature, power-dynamic-sounds-like-a-lawsuit-about-to-happen kind of way that still made me wildly uncomfortable all on its own), which VERY much confused me because that _seemed_ so out-of-character for her...? But, yeah... the backstory and real meaning of the song was just totally lost on HS freshmen me, unfortunately, so I almost always skipped this song... I feel really bad about how I misinterpreted that song (and, by extension, her character) now, even though I was wise enough to kept those _very_ unverified assumptions to myself (in fact, this is the first time I've ever said any of that to literally anyone). Literally 20 years later and finally knowing what I know about it now, this song is *_incredibly_* well done.

I never listened to this song before, or knew what it was about. But I had two abusers, one my biological father and one online that lasted for 19 years. Should I have seen the abuse before? Yes. Should I have stopped it before, yes. What matters most is at 32 I know now. I'm only own journey. I don't know who out there needs this: Keep going, hell is no place to stop. It wasn't your fault and no matter how much you doubt yourself or think of ways you could have stopped it. Know you did what you could at the time. You are doing great now, just keep that head up.. as hard as that gets sometimes. Smile, because you deserve a bright future. They don't.

@jacobotter7083 жыл бұрын
i mean, is that really true for you? Right Through You was a scathing no-holds-barred indictment, Hands Clean is a fairly passive-aggressive confession. it packs one of of my favorite punches, but i wouldn't view the latter to be more 'mature' than the former, psychologically speaking. screaming the monkey off your back certainly feels better than a decade of therapy about what you subtly slipped in under a pristine pop radar. the melody tho? oh god yes. i think Hands Clean is one of pop music's most underrated true gems.

Alanis shattered *so* many glass cielings at a time when the music inudstry was still *massively* male-dominated and she inspired generations after her to shamelessly speak their truths. As a child of the 90s, she felt like a spiritual older sister who taught me that my voice had value and power. I'm 36 now, and I can't even describe what *IMMENSE* pride I feel when I hear incredibly talented and popular artists of this era like Taylor Swift say in front of sold-out stadiums that if it weren't for Alanis, _specifically,_ she wouldn't be there, and for artists like Halsey to collab with her on an album centered on the theme of female empowerment. She's still _so_ beloved today, especially by women in the industry, and I couldn't be prouder of her legacy.

When I heard this song, it resonated with me for some reasons as I thought Alanis was confessing. After watching the video and realizing she was the victim I actually felt my heart hurt. I honored a former bosses silence, as she certainly washed her hands clean of me. I felt embarrassed as a man for letting myself be taken advantage of on such a way. Thank AM for help me move past the shame and realizing my own self worth!

Great song, but the lyrics are extremely powerful. An older man tells her that without him, she wouldn't have amounted to anything, yet he washes his hands clean (absolves himself of responsibility) for having a relationship with a minor. He puts it all on her for "tempting him" and expects her silence so he won't get in trouble. When Alanis came forward recently about being a victim of statutory rape as a teenager it really put this song in perspective.

Sexual abuse …whoever it is, the world knows you exist. To all victims and survivors of sexual abuse, I pray for your healing and May God ease your trauma. Stand Strong. You are not alone. You are beautiful. You are worthy. Honour your bravery and willpower. We cannot and should not accept violations of human dignity Nor can we live empty lives waiting for an “apology” that may never come. Acceptance is a key to moving on. You are a victim. It is not your fault. Allow yourself to rebuild “You” at your own pace. I hope your soul finds peace. #AlanisMorisette #HandsClean #SexualAbuse #Survivors

The 90s and early 2000s really were the greatest time for female vocalists in alternative rock: Alanis, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Gwen Stefani, Melissa Auf der Maur, Veruca Salt, Skunk Anansie, etc. - those were real women with attitude and real music, not today's plastic dolls.

I'm here after watching the segment about this song on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I was 15 when JLP came out, one of my very first CDs (not albums) and I listened to that to death. I have been an Alanis fan since. I was too naive to understand what this song meant but heartbroken to listen to it now. Her lyrics on You Oughta Know "an older version of me..." makes sense now, not that I claim that I know she's referring to the same person.

Something that I never noticed is that the voices from the verses sections (old guy- young woman) can be exchangable. Althought it seemed very obvious that is the voice of an older guy, I always listened as how the young girl saw herself as "powerful" at the moment. To me, it sounds like she is singing from her own "inmaturity", as how she felt that it was her giving him power. That, to me, give the chorus much more power and even a sarcastic tone of superiority. Damn, this is a killer song.
