LYRICS
You'll rescue me. Right?
In the exact same way they never did.
I'll be happy. Right?
When your healing powers kick in.
You'll complete me. Right?
Then my life can finally begin.
I'll be worthy. Right?
Only when you realize the gem I am.
But this won't work now the way it once did.
And I won't keep it up even though I would love to.
Once I know who I'm not then I'll know who I am,
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim.
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down
When I was defenceless.
And parting with them is like parting with invisible best friends.
This ring will help me yet as will you, knight in shining armour.
This pill will help me yet as will these boys gone through like water.
But this won't work as well as the way it once did
'Cause I want to decide between survival and bliss.
And though I know who I'm not I still don't know who I am,
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim.
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down when I was a kid.
And parting with them is like parting with a childhood best friend.
I've spent so long firmly looking outside me.
I've spent so much time living in survival mode.
This won't work now the way it once did
'Cause I want to decide between survival and bliss.
And though I know who I'm not I still don't know who I am,
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim.
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down
When I was defenceless.
And parting with them is like parting with invisible best friends.
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down
When I was a kid.
And parting with them is like parting with a childhood best friend.

When I hear this song, it brings to mind my own experience with maladaptive daydreaming, which is a coping mechanism I've had since childhood, as well as my experience with limerence. It hits on a very personal level. I listen to this and then I look back on my life and reflect on the years I spent absent from the world around me, hoping for something more than what was in front of me.

I see everyone’s point, I guess what I’m trying to also point out is that nobody ever seems to be happy, I don’t know if that’s the correct word. All I ever see is in comments is either someone is overrated or underrated, nobody ever seems correctly rated or appropriately rated, if there is even such a thing. Just because I don’t like Billie Eilish, I wouldn’t particularly say she is overrated, just because I don’t care about her music. I normally listen to “underrated” music, because the overrated (whether or not they really are) ones just seem too commercial sometimes.

I think this song and video really demonstrate the power of social and cultural conditioning too...that finding a partner or love or our life is somehow going to magically solve each and every one of our problems and we will never struggle again (the 'happily ever after/knight in shining armour' myth.) Even if it's not conscious or you don't believe it completely or with your rational mind, I think most people at least somewhat buy into this myth subconsciously (myself included to an extent, although trying to evolve past it) because it is just so seductive and a way of abdicating responsibility, and such a prevalent myth the world over. But in reality we are all human and have our limitations, don't get me wrong someone can be an absolutely amazing influence in your life but no one is without some human limitations ... we should aim to love ourselves before seeking someone else, then we learn to have boundaries and not put up with unfair treatment
@kelsos1000
@kelsos1000 5 жыл бұрын
Love is by itself mythologized, otherwise it would not be love, but a scientific insight into how the hormone is in the human body. The tendency toward oneself and the tendency towards the partner only coincide somewhat. In either case, it is about partiality or favouring yourself or your partner. But there is an important difference. We can not self-absorbed. We can only fall in love by interacting with another person.

I love Alanis precisely because of this song. and this song brings back a very curious story from my life. When I was a child I heard this song on the radio. I didn't know who was singing. So I dreamed of places exactly like those on the left side of the clip. And years later I went to see the clip on MTV and was amazed. Thanks to that I became a fan of Alanis. It's as if she entered my dream.

I LOVE the concept of this video, it's probably one of my favourite music videos ever! The acheing gap between idealised fantasy and reality that exists for many people (although some people have the fairytale...ok every couple has trials and tribulations but extremely happy relationships DO exist for sure!! (albeit not perfect ones as we are all human and have limitations of time, energy, patience etc) remember it's better to be alone than with someone who makes you feel all alone when you are with them. Happy Valentine's Day to all singletons out there (including me!) your time will come, love yourself and have faith in the universe, it's better to wait for someone amazing than to put up with people who treat you like sh*t. (Although SOMEtimes, experience is the best teacher, but don't put up with sh*t you know is compromising your self love and dignity...

I’ve seen a lot of creative, wonderful videos in my life. This one takes number one for me. It really hits a deep spot inside of me, mind, body and soul. My body literally reacts to this as if it is a real past time, and it makes me think so much about how much we have fallen into our own imagination with people who hurt us, but also it keeps me hopeful that I’m not the only person out here in this crazy world that still has integrity, passion, and wants to be in an honest committed union. I hope all of us end up realizing our worth, and escaping the daydream if we find someone is not good for us. We deserve good. We deserve light and love.

Holy shit! I recognize that 99cent store! I shopped there exclusively when I lived in Los Angeles from 1996-2004!!! I wish I could go to her concert in Oakland on Mar 25th. But there is just no way.

I love how Alanis is just so... natural. It's like she doesn't worry about her appearence, and that's what makes her beautiful. I think she's a wonderful person to look up to, in that sense.
