in my head I was thinking this is how Elvis gets me but I realize she was talking about him but now listening to it again time It’s makes sense. Sometimes hearing something for the first time I miss it but I’m glad everyone showed me because listening again made me see it in a different light and I like the song even more

This is one of the best tributes to Elvis ever made! It captures his spirit & his unique soulful sound as it describes how much that"little boy smile" affected those who love him! A haunting voice like Alannah Myles' conveys the message beautifully!

Yeah I am glad that a new generation gets to appreciate Alannah Myles...This was her most famous song and it was written at an Elvis memorial 10 years after he died. The words BLACK VELVET signified his picture being painted on a Black velvet canvas everywhere at the time ; and his hair dye colour was called Black Velvet...many of the references were to how he spanned black music and was "the new religion" in music i.e. rock and roll. There were numerous other things in the song that were completely about him and how he brought black music to the White audiences etc. etc. This is such a significantly important song far beyond just its musical importance. It is a social commentary, far ahead of its time sung by a Canadian Woman from Toronto!!!!

It can be 3 generations from now and Elvis' name and legend will remain. The man was a phenom. He had that crazy stellar quality about him. To this day people worldwide know who he is, even in Japan they dress up like him and pay tribute to him with covers and Elvis themed bars and restaurants. The man is still beloved worldwide! This has to be the greatest tribute to The King that has been made. Christopher Ward and David Tyson wrote it and Myles recorded it....couldn't have been a better combination. She just brings that song to the soul. RIP Mr. Elvis Presley!

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, which she mentions, though many people just connect him with Memphis. There's a terrific song by a man named Mark Cohn who sang "Walking in Memphis," and it's about a fan stopping in Memphis in the rain and visiting the haunts where Elvis lived, with a scene or two from Graceland. Get the official version in this case....Mark Cohn, Walking in Memphis. i am in love with that song.

This song hit number 1 on U.S. Billboard and won awards in Canada and the U.S. including a Grammy. Alannah is one of those artists you won't see as many reactions from because she's Canadian and not a part of the U.S. mainstream so it was thrilling to see you react to her. She had great pipes. She's also someone with other songs worth a reaction like: 1. Love is 2. Lover of mine. (I'm confident you'd love this one) 3. Still got this thing. 4. Song Instead of a Kiss And other great stuff. I do have to thank you for this one for another reason. I'm just barely old enough to have seen some Elvis when he was alive and I had this Album. I've seen LOTS of Elvis stuff on Black Velvet. I NEVER connected this song to Elvis. It just blows my mind how I could have missed that.

In Canada this song of course got a lot of airplay so my recollections of it are aural and not visual. The video to me has a country vibe, but aurally I thought it was harder rock. As posted above "Love Is" is kind of a cool, quirky, different song.

In addition to being an allusion to the cheap black velvet canvas paintings that could be bought on every street corner in Memphis in the 70’s, ‘Black Velvet’ was a popular cheap whiskey that was sold in not so spectacular liquor stores. That’s why she says ‘Black Velvet, if you please’.
