I saw a photo of Ms. Myles from February 2023 recently on the CityNews Calgary website. She’s still hot, although she is suffering health issues, including “Ankylosing spondylitis . . . an inflammatory disease that can cause some of the spinal vertebrae to fuse together over time”. None-the-less, she is working on a few projects, and I’m hoping she releases some new material. Alannah, my respects, and carry on.

She did have issues with bad management and thats a fact but she did have one legit major flaw of her own. She was wildly inconsistent live. Shows my age but I saw her maybe 8 or 10 times when i was in university. Some nights she rocked the joint and others were cringe worthy. Shes a hell of a singer and has great songs and she was always making an effort just sometimes was bloody awful. Black Velvet isnt my fave song of hers but I can't imagine anyone else singing it. Rock This Joint is another great one. But at that time in Canada there was pretty much zero chance of getting big and selling records without being known for being good live. We tended to expected live to be even better than the record cause thats what we are used to. When she couldnt do that and then having bad management that isnt helping her career was unfortunately more limited than it maybe should have been.

Cindy Wedel - Alannah's band made a deal with Atlantic records, and they said a lot of the money she made went to cover "up front costs" of producing the record album. Alannah was next to broke for a long time after this record came out. She's been getting some monies lately over the last 10 or so years I believe, and I hope so, because without her performing this, this song wouldn't be near big as it is. It should be noted here --that Alannah did not write this song, but her boyfriend in the band at that time did, and became quite wealthy, as he got royalty writes for writing , and composing the song. Since Alannah didn't write the song, she got nothing, for composition. This is sort of a sad story IMO, for one of the most talented female rock singers of all time. Allannah could have married her boyfriend in the band, but didn't want to. She also could have married Robert Plante from Led Zeplin, but didn't want to give up her career for his. Then she got in a serious car accident in the 1990's and also fell off a horse, and screwed her back up, so she was in awful sad shape for a long time , and could hardly walk. I hope she's gotten a lot better, and gained back her old vitality, health, and movement. She had "very restricted" mobility for a long time I hope she's better now, as she was "definitely" one of the greatest female rock singers ever, with one of the most seductive, raspy sounding blue's voices I've ever heard. On top of all that, she had great beauty, gorgeous face, a great body and a wicked set of legs -- Alannah was indeed the whole package.

What a hot rocking chick, she certainly had it all in her prime, the great movement, and powerful stage presence. One of the best female rock voices ever, with that raspy powerful, bluesy type rock voice, that is second to "none" Very unique voice. I would put Alannah at the top of the list, and ahead of Anne and Nancy Wilson and Joan Jett. She was truly a dynamic performer, and I wish I could have seen her live. one of the best of the many amazingly talented woman singers to come out of Canada in the 80s. Its such a shame that most of them , like Alllanah, k.d., and Luba, never achieved a tremendous amount of fame outside of Canada. Had they all been married to a man like Rene Angelil, they likely could have achieved the worldwide success that Celine has, because they were every bit as talented.
@sadee12872 жыл бұрын
I hardly think that Céline's success is due to her being married to René Angelil. Without him she'd have still been a superstar. She had incredible drive and persistence to get where she is. And knew what she wanted from the time she was 12. All the others you mention had just as much talent and drive. But it was (and is) hard to launch in Canada, and harder yet to achieve superstardom in the US market. It's a weird alchemy of talent and marketing and sometimes popularity too often based on looks. I've seen some artists whose talent no where near matches their success (read: Shania Twain FPS!) and yet so many others get shunted aside who have more ability and vocal prowess. It's enough that Alannah, Luba and Amanda (Marshall) made it big in Canada. That ought to be enough. Why do we always feel the need to look beyond our borders to define success.

@@saragrant9749 Yes, your very right about that. She did fall off a horse, and had a car accident, I believe in the early 90's and was never the same. Chiropractors just made it worse. I think she's in a very fragile state of health right now, I hear.

Had a huge crush on Alannah in my late teens when this song came out. I still do.😄

Just parked my car and the radio started playing 'Black Velvet', I couldn't leave until the entire song played through, instantly became an Alannah Myles fan, she struck a nerve. Still remains a fave to this day!
