I only wish Elvis could have been alive to hear this song. The performance by Alannah Myles is both heartwarming, and heartbreaking. And, the lyrics certainly tell his story. How can you not love it?

One of my aunts was an escort in Vegas, she met Elvis and he really liked her so her took (and other women) with him on a tour abt 6-8 months. Now she’s in a nursing home. I want to visit her and just hear all her stories. She fkd everyone lol of course some would be embarrassed by that but I’m fascinated!! She never had kids and eventually contracted HIV in the 80’s she’s honestly one of the nicest ppl I’ve ever met in my life- so funny too. It’s crazy to me bc she wasn’t even that pretty. She is my moms half sister. Her mom was the daughter of a chief on the hoopa reservation and her dad (my grandpa) was a Russian Jew, she had this hook nose, weird body etc but she was I guess good at her trade 🤷‍♀️ Lol

They were just all around betta, i dont care what people say, but there are things called gender roles. 80s women embraced their gender role. Their sensitive, soft, sweet submissiveness was why women and men fit so perfecttly together then. ( im not being misogynistic when talking about womens submissiveness, im sayin as women they are hardwired to be this way. They are the yin to a mans yang or vice versa)

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell Jimmie Rodgers on the Victrola up high Mama's dancin' with a baby on her shoulder The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for Black velvet and that little boy's smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees Black velvet if you please Up in Memphis, the music's like a heatwave White lightning, bound to drive you wild Mama's baby's in the heart of every schoolgirl "Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for Black velvet and that little boy's smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees Black velvet if you please Every word of every song that he sang was for you In a flash, he was gone, it happened so soon What could you do? Black velvet and that little boy's smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees Black velvet if you please Black velvet and that little boy's smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees Black velvet if you please If you please If you please If you please

Of course Alannah Myles was Blues / Rock but speaking of artists that did songs that were tributes to elvis, on the country charts Pam Tillis did a song titled Maybe it Was Memphis around the same time as this, I can't swear to it but I thought it went to number one on the country charts. Also within 6 months to a year of the original I believe Tanya Tucker did a country cover of Black Velvet

The song is a paean to Elvis Presley, whose portrait was often painted on black velvet, and who used a hair dye named Black Velvet. Co-writer Christopher Ward, who was Myles' then-boyfriend, was inspired on a bus full of Elvis fans riding to Memphis attending the 10th anniversary vigil at Graceland, in 1987.
