When I first got to Dutch Harbor I got a job Crab Pitching for Icicle Seafoods. I was 47 years old. They worked us for 16 hours a day with 8 off. I did that for 14 days straight. That was the hardest job I ever had because of the hours. THEN I found out where the money was. The Longshoremans Hall. I'm a Carpenter but I landed a job out of that hall as a Chassis Mechanic Helper for 12 hr days seven days a week $26HR. I was up there for 6 years and my last job was on the new Powerhouse for 49.95 HR 65-70 hrs a week. On that job my take home pay after tax was $2650.00 a week. That was the last time I worked because my back stopped me and had to go on Disability. I worked for over 10 years in pain due to a car accident and finally it got to be too much. I wanted to retire from the Piledrivers Union But only got 6 years in. I fell in love with Dutch Harbor. Some great people up there.
