A jewelry tip for necklaces...The straw method is an inexpensive way to protect your necklaces from tangling while travelling. I used a plastic straw, but they are a bit hard to come by now, at least here in Australia! I threaded one end of the necklace through the straw and then closed the clasp at the mouth of the straw. This is a good way to keep your necklaces from getting all tangled and knotted. Put the chains down a straw. In the top of the straw, make a small slit to hook the top of necklace to keep it in place. No more tangle and no knots. (from Lynn)

Highly recommend Regent Seven Seas cruise line. During Covid, I worked on several Regent cruises (RN doing covid testing), and it is a wonderful cruise experience! The cabins are beautiful, all have verandas, all the shore excursions are included. It is definitely more expensive than other cruise lines, but once you add up all the "add ons" with other cruise lines, it can be similar cost-wise. Anyway, thanks for the post--very interesting!

It’s just Alaska! Love that. We were fortunate to meet our longtime friend who lived in Alaska at the end of our cruise. I really balked at his clothing recommendations. Waterproof jacket? Layers? Hiking shoes? Yes I purchased it all. And your advice is spot on. Alaska is casual and Alaska cruises are much more relaxed. I wore Marmot outerwear , Merrill hiking sneakers with Vibram soles, and Cuddleduds thermal underwear😂. Lifesavers. Thanks for sharing. Brings back such fond memories.

My grandparents lived in Sitka and I was fortunate to visit a couple of times. I always say Alaska has to be experienced, seeing it in pictures or on television doesn’t do it justice.

I agree about the beanie. I have a bright yellow Carhartt one from the hardware store in Seward because I was cold! Turned out to be a great souvenir since I remember kayaking amongst the glaciers each time I wear it.

Your trip looks like it was fun. You should consider cruising the Norwegian fjords. My husband and I did it last summer, and it was FANTASTIC. I'd go again in a heartbeat to relive my time in the land of the midnight sun.

What perfect timing! We are headed to an Alaskan land sea adventure later this summer. I’ve been going over and over what to bring. As seasoned campers, hiking shoes, long underwear and layers are a must! You’ve given me some great additional ideas. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

Welcome back. I love all the detail in your video, including travel and clothing info. I fully agree about the outdoor clothing and footwear, for almost every trip that involves parks or walking/short hikes. Alaska is still on our bucket list and I would do it the same way as you- some time on a small cruise, perhaps, and then lots of time on our own. We have done this on almost every trip to other places too. It is nice to be with the locals or just do your own thing whenever possible. Would appreciate a part two that includes more detail on your land trip!

I recently went on a cruise to Alaska (Silverseas). I completely agree about the hiking shoes - bonus points if they are waterproof. And people on our cruise also dressed nicely for dinner.

I traveled to Alaska on a Dr. Charles Stanley cruise. It was wonderful! Although I liked your Chico’s travel wardrobe you shared 3 months ago, I’m glad you switched to the more casual layers for the cruise. Now you’ll need another trip for the Chico’s clothes! 😊

We did an Alaska Cruise in 2011 and the one thing I was not prepared for was that it was really chilly on the ship all the time. I think the ships they use for the Alaska trips (at least the one we were on) are older ships that were built for Caribbean cruises. They are smaller ships that fit in the Alaskan waterways. I didn't wear any of my evening wear because I needed warmer things even inside the ship at night. Didn't deter us too much cause we ended back in Alaska for the Iditarod in 2012 where we were prepared for 50 below weather but it ended up being only about 0-20 degrees which was actually too warm for the dogs. Go figure!

This was a fabulous video. I took a Princess cruise to Alaska in the 90's and this too was an amazing trip. I was actually part of the entertainment where I lip synced "On the Good Ship Lolli Pop" dressed as Shirley Temple. Other guests were in the show as various celebrities including Dolly Parton. It was a blast. Alaska is so beautiful and worth seeing. My husband and I are going to be traveling to the UK at the end of September and I just purchased that same raincoat from Athleta. The style is great and I hope that will serve me well in England. Did you do a packing trip video when you were in London? You look fabulous and feel better.

It looked like a beautiful trip. But I would go to somewhere warm. One of my sisters and her husband go on cruises all the time. I don’t think they’ve ever been to Alaska. They did go on a Mediterranean cruise for close to a month. They have been all over. I’m not much of a traveler. But I might go to Alaska for a day or two. When the sun is shining all day. And I’m not sure I would have liked hiking. I hear too many stories about people seeing bears, elk and bison out in the wild. I would have a heart attack. So they wouldn’t have to kill me. But they might maul me.

Good morning Kay! I’ve been waiting for this video to come out because we are taking a similar luxury Alaskan Cruise to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. Our itinerary sounds exactly like yours, starting in Vancouver and ending in Seward. After the cruise we are taking a train tour into Alaska. My question is regarding the luggage you took. I have the Away Medium and bigger Carry On which I noticed on your blog is exactly what you were taking. Were you glad that you took 2 checked bags or would you recommend just taking 1 larger checked bag? I wish I could get away with just the Medium checked bag but don’t see that happening for this trip😊. Thank you for another great video!

Hi Kay, We are starting to plan an Alaskan cruise next May. I’ve requested a quote from Regent since you spoke so highly of the experience. How did you know how to budget for the roadtrip portion of the trip?

James actually looked at roadtrips you could purchase as add-ons to a cruise and charted ours based on some of the places they were going and staying. He booked all the lodges and hotels as well as the rental car. Be prepared for gas and food to be high. But the car we rented got such good gas mileage on Alaska’s open roads we didn’t buy much gas. But food was pretty high and in a lot of places you don’t have a lot of choices of where to eat. You could also use a travel agent to help you with that part of the trip too.
