I was over the weight limit on a helicopter ride and land on Mendenhall Glacier. Payed double. What we saw and did on that Princess Excursion was a great experience of a lifetime. So any excursions that you really want to do and that will only be once. Is worth it. We still talk about those excursions. Go for it!

I did that same Mendenhall and whale watching excursion. It was definitely worth it to me. We not only saw a humpback calf but we watched it play with a stellar seal. I loved every minute of it.

It seems to me that those excursions are worth the price, at least once. Even the helicopter, and even at your surcharged price, would be worth it. Helicopter rides in places that aren't as dangerous really aren't cheap, and you get so much more. Worth it doesn't mean I'd spend the money for it. I'm careful with my travel money so whether or not I'd buy the excursion would depend on the my situation at the time. But if I had it without screwing up my budget, I'd do it.

The excursions are a must! You have to think of the ship portion of the cruise as a mode of transportation and hotel to get you to the fantastic stuff Alaska offers. The excursions are what makes it an adventure. Totally different than a Caribbean cruise.

Yes, Alaska is (at least for me) a once in a lifetime trip. I went with my mom in 2005. We were on Celebrity. In Juneau the Flight & Feast-float plane and salmon bake at the lodge was $244. It was the most expensive excursion I had ever taken to that point. Mom has since passed and I treasure the memories of that trip. Oh and for comparison in 2005 the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan was $29. Thanks for the info.

So many choices, itineraries and ships. My girlfriend and I are considering Alaska next May for our anniversary and not sure what would be the best itineraries for a first time Alaskan cruise. We are also on a tight budget and may have to go with an interior room. I know a balcony is ideal, but hoping we can still enjoy our cruise, which I’ve heard we still can. The good thing is we live in Los Angeles so it’s a lot easier to get to a ship.

I’ve cruised to Alaska twice. 🚢. For my money all the excursions are worth it. I’ve taken the helicopter and landed on a glacier, done whale watching 🐳 and flown above the cloud’s to see the summit of Mt. Denali ☁️ ( a rare sight because the top is usually inside the clouds). Alaska is like no other place on earth and the memories are fantastic.

That Juneau excursion for the helicopter experience sounds amazing! Something to add to the bucket list. When we visited San Francisco in the late 00s, we took a helicopter tour of the Bay Area. They were in the middle of a heat wave (80 degrees F) and no fog so the pilot was able to fly a figure 8 under and over the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the coolest experiences. Another great show today Tony!

We have taken several cruises to Alaska, & experienced both the the humpback bubble net fishing and a pod of orcas simply playing & putting on a show on our first cruise. That was also in Auk Bay. So glad you got to experience that magical event. Your golf analogy to what makes you want to come back was spot on. We've gone back several times and never had an even remotely similar experience. Good luck with your next Alaska adventure.

Hi Tony, Alaska is such an amazing place. I've done the helicopter ride to go glacier climbing. It was one of the most amazing thing's I've ever done. Yes, I totally agree the cost is so worth it. I hope you get to do it sometime in the future. We've also done the lumber jack show. Lot's of fun. Worth it! Whale watching is also a must. There are so many choices for that. Also worth it. Totally worth the cost, especially the helicopter! We did one over the Big Island of Hawaii in Feb 2018, right over the active volcano before it majorly erupted, it was amazing. You often only go to these places once, stretch your budget if you can. Over years of travelling I have seen destinations change so much that I'm grateful for the photos of "how it was". 10 years ago for my BF's milestone birthday, I paid for us to go by helicopter up over the Canadian Rockies at the Columbia Icefields into YoHo National Park in British Columbia and back to Nordegg, Alberta. We saw 5 different glaciers. We were in the air 55 mins and it cost $1000 cdn for both of us together. Worth every penny. I'm sorry you missed out on the flight due to bad weather.

First of all, for me, I'd pay more than that NOT to have to ever get on a helicopter, but I guess worth it for brave people because it's a once in a lifetime thing. I was on one of those whale watching boats in the background that day watching this same event and that was the highlight (other than sailing with you and Jenny :) of our Encore cruise. We didn't do the glacier but our 4 hour whale watching excursion cost about $150 each with a private company (Harv & Marv's) with only 10 other people onboard and was worth every penny. We had a very knowledgeable naturalist guiding us. Great!!!

My husband and I were on the Encore the week prior to your cruise. It was AMAZING! And we did the Taku helicopter glacier excursion. NCLs price was $729 Base. If you were over 250lbs, there was a $150 surcharge. The early time was canceled and we were moved back to a 5:30pm slot. Even at base price, I’ve paid less monies for an entire Caribbean cruise. But, that being said, we agreed that we would do it all again. The experience was absolutely amazing. Exhilarating and other worldly. Worth every penny!!!!

Would definitely recommend the Juneau Mendenhall glacier excursion ( through Princess in May) saw baby humpback up close and Orcas. In Ketchikan we took public bus on our own to a Totem park. Easy and very inexpensive. Would say that Glacier Bay National Park was a definite highlight. My husband was very reluctant to cruise Alaska, but now is very glad I talked him into it. It is truly one of the most beautiful untouched places. So much so that our Granddaughter who is stationed in Anchorage in the air force wants to stay there forever! I recently went to Alaska with my brothers for fishing trip. It was our first time there. Without a doubt the scenery was spectacular. Had we not caught one fish it would’ve been worth the money it cost to get there. Every time you turn it’s a Kodak moment. I’ve been to the Caribbean multiple times and I can tell you I’ve taken way more pictures in Alaska than those other trips combined. Before we even left Alaska we talked about going back. Tony it’s been awhile since I’ve watched a video- life’s been alittle crazy. I can see you’ve dropped considerably weight-way to go and congrats!!

We just got back from an Alaska cruise a few weeks ago too, it was a blast! Honorable mention, the Salmon Bake in Juneau is DELISH!! From one fluffy cruiser to another, this is so good! For anyone who says salmon is not their cup of tea, I’d encourage them still to try it because it’s very likely the salmon they tried before that was off putting to them was not prepared like this. They probably had overcooked and dried out fish, probably came to them frozen. The Salmon Bake is fresh caught, grilled over fire to the perfect doneness, and coated with a brown sugar butter glaze. I have not had a finer cooked salmon anywhere on earth, and believe me I’ve had a lot! For anyone that tries the salmon and still doesn’t like it, don’t worry, they have BBQ chicken in the buffet too. Haha I agree the lumberjack show is very fun and worth it for anyone that hasn’t seen it before, it’s a must see. That said, I saw it in 1999, 2009, and now again in 2022, it’s pretty much been the exact same show each time. I went with a different group of people each time, but if I’m going again on my own, I’ll probably do something else because I’ve seen the same show three times now.

I booked a helicopter tour called pilots choice while in Juneau, Sept 2000. Because of my weight, it cost me $450. Bad weather canceled all the helicopter tours, except Pilots Choice. They could fly where they wanted and were able to avoid the weather. There was four of us that booked this excursion. Landed on the glacier three or four different places, allowing us to walk around and such. Last stop, the pilot placed a bottle of champagne in a puddle on the ice, we toasted our journey with perfectly a chilled beverage. Well worth the price, life long memories. I actually stood on ice “a color blue my eyes have never seen before.” Thank you Jenny for the quote last week.

Whale watching is worth every penny! We went on a RC Alaskan cruise in 2014 and seeing the humpbacks is still one of the highlights of my entire life. We also did the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan and kayaked around the canals there. Very fun! Do all the excursions you can in Alaska…they’re once in a lifetime things. :)

Thank you so much for the information. I’m considering a cruise in 2024 to Alaska, so I appreciated hearing about your excursions, including prices. I would go on any excursion that I can physically handle, at least once.

Great vlog Tony! I have one for you. My Wife, two children and I went to Alaska in June. Here were our excursion list (all X 4). Tracy Arm Fjord - Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer Icy Straight Point - the ZipRider Adventure Juneau - Mendenhall helicopter via glacier guided walk Ketchikan - Hovercraft Eco Adventure & Wildlife Viewing Although very expensive, it is something our family will be talking about for a long time. Sorry you couldn’t go on yours. You would’ve loved it! Looking forward to seeing more of your vlogs!

We are going to Alaska this coming May, and I am sooooo exited!! First, thank you for your awesome content!!! Second, I think because going to Alaska is a once in a lifetime trip for most of us, YES the price is worth it if you can afford it... I have spent almost $900 for all my excursions (3) And I am completely stoked!!!!

My instantaneous response to the prices was that they were less than I expected. I would have have bought all three as bucket list items without hesitation. I am an ex USN sailor that had the privilege of seeing more ports of call in my three years forward deployed to the Western Pacific than my dad did in 22 years of service. The State Department would inform port visitors of excursions arranged for a one time Naval visit. My personal criteria was to compare once in a lifetime opportunities with what it might cost from deep in US mainland, vs while right in port with the US Navy to keep tabs on me. Conclusion, if you are there by any “group” means, you will probably never get as good of a deal as a cruise or deployment offer. Count me in. All in!!! Thank you for first rate analysis.

Just got back from Alaska on the Quantum yesterday. I booked a sea plane in Juneau for a five glacier tour and it was expensive but totally awesome!

We did a similar helicopter trip back in 2021 where we did a glacier walk. Helicopter ride from Juneau to the glacier and then a couple hour walk on it. By far of all the excursions we have done, this was our absolute favorite. I had a feeling when you said it was the most expensive excursion you had booked it had to have been one to a glacier. Try again the next time you go back and I do not think you will be disappointed.

We agree that the excursions in Alaska are excellent. Have done the Lumberjack show, the Mendenhall tour, a Totem and Botanical Garden tour and a Salmon Fishery tour. Next time the Helicopter tour might just have to get ticked off the list.

My husband and I did a helicopter tour to a glacier in Alaska and it was at the time around 500 each. It was AMAZING! I was so scared but the pilot was so sweet and put me at ease and I enjoyed it so much! If you get another chance Tony , go for it! It’s only money and totally worth every penny!

Sweet! Last year, we both sailed on the Majestic Princess to Alaska one week apart, and this year were both doing the NCL Encore. I’m booked on the Encore for October 16th. It’s like we’re connected! 😅

Yes I loved Allen Marine. I did the same mendenhall and whale watching tour. So jealous of the bubble feeding thing. Although we did see breaching and very close up and then waving and I took a telephoto lens so I was able to get great shots. But yes Alaska was very different but practically life-changing for me in just the awesomeness of where you are.

Did Alaska in 2015 and spent $$$$ to take helicopter ride and land on glacier. Worth every penny! The sights, sounds and tha taste of the melting glacier was something to remember forever.

I think Alaska is one of those cruising destinations where excursions are necessary if you want to up your experience from shopping and food in town. There were two highlights on my recent Alaska cruise: Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier scenic cruising (included at no extra cost) and a 5-glacier seaplane flight-seeing that really wowed me, despite being a pilot (extra cost, but much less expensive than helicopters). Although not excursions, I would encourage people to consider a land/sea tour to Alaska and Yukon, since there is so much history, scenery and wildlife that can only be experienced on land.

Great video Tony and very helpful thank you! My lady and I are considering Alaska next May for our anniversary. The good thing is we live in Los Angeles so it’s not like when we have to fly all the way across the country to Florida for a Caribbean cruise. It would be our first time doing Alaska and would have to book an interior room if we want to do some of those excursions. The helicopter seems a bit extreme in price but I think the other excursions are fair, especially the lumberjack show.

You definitely have the right attitude Tony. Doesn't matter what the cost of the excursion is if you are worried about value. You will never have a good time. But excursions in Alaska are so unique it's hard to pass on any of them

Totally worth the excursions!!! We’ve been to Alaska 6 times & will definitely go again and again. Try the Misty Fjords boat excursion & the Deadliest Catch excursion in Ketchikan sometime. Both are great & I recommend Cape Fox Lodge for a fabulous meal!!! Had the best eagle viewing from our room and the restaurant. Also add Hubbard Glacier and Icy Straight Point to your list. The museum in ISP is very cool. And Sitka is fabulous!!!
