In this video, I use my alaskan chainsaw mill to create lumber out of a fallen hemlock tree behind my cabin in the woods.

You're really getting used to the milling process and the lumber in such big slabs looks wonderful. Well done on that - and it is good to see evidence of collaboration and friendship (with Matt) as well as neighbour Al. Great work and great approach to work.

Thanks for another video. I know how much time it takes to film and edit. Love that you are giving back to Al... A few tips on your milling: Save those 2.6 oz oil containers for your mixed oil. You can later buy oil by the gallon (or quart) and refill those. Much easier to measure out the right amount, and you can throw one in with your chainsaw equipment. Eye protection: try some mesh glasses. They don't scratch, don't fog up, and they keep the chips from the saw out. If you are getting dust in your eyes while wearing these then it is way past time to sharpen your chain. I see your lumber is nicely stacked and strapped. I like to have a strap every 3 ft, so 3 straps per 8 ft pile. Also, and more importantly, you need stickers between your layers and on the bottom. These not only let the wood dry more evenly, but also keeps your lumber from growing mold and mildew. Once those start, you might as well cut the lumber up into firewood. Paint the ends of your lumber to keep it from cracking. There are expensive wax based products, but even paint works. Make sure it is oil based. The "Oops" paint at big box stores is pretty cheap. You can try water based, but it'll peel off the ends. I guess it would be better than nothing. At least make sure it is exterior paint. You can stack / sticker / band the slabs of wood if you don't have time to mill into lumber. That's arguably better because you won't have as much warping. Keep the slabs in order. You'll want to remove the bark eventually to keep the bugs out, though. Don't cover your slabs with tarps. You can get away with tarps on firewood because it's not a big deal if that molds a little, but your lumber you want to cover with metal (or plastic) roofing. Keep it off the ground, too. And, as I mentioned in an earlier comment, it's easier to prop one end of the log up and mill downhill. Let gravity be your friend.

Milling wood is so satisfying. Even if you don’t have plans yet for the lumber. Just make sure to sticker the slabs and seal the end grain even if it’s just paint. Your final product will come out so much better. Keep up the good work sir!

'Heavy' handling your cut lumber is good! It helps shake free some of the tension in the wood. I always drop my rough cut boards on the shop floor then leave them for a while to do this. It's amazing the difference it can make when then sizing and flattening them. Nice discovery Diego! Now remember to sticker your lumber and cover up. But leave good ventilation to prevent damp, and don't let any metal touch it or you'll get black staining, which would be a shame because that lumber looks great!

I own a timber company and when I first saw you milling hardwood without a respirator I was horrified. It’s drilled into us in the uk that hardwood dust is carcinogenic and we now have to have our employees tested on a regular basis to make sure they stay healthy. Please be careful as you work solo and make sure you have a phone or loud siren on you to call for help which I hope you will never need.

@@mrMacGoover it looks like ash or cedar to me but then I only have nearly 30 years of buying the stuff. As far as softwood being toxic, if you breathe enough of it in it certainly wouldn’t be good for you even if it isn’t classed as carcinogenic.

1. enter the degrees Celsius in addition to the faraday and also the metric system for inches 2. you should buy a device with a leaf saw, it is faster, less sawdust, you get more wood, plus a tool for sharpening the teeth with sliding teeth when you make so many cuts, you also breathe less wood dust 3. make more videos with Al, you understand each other, share experiences, help each other, he is like a father

Just a heads up if you havent done it already, but use 1x1” or 1x2” in between the stacked lumber you already cut for drying, maybe every 2’ apart. Especially on lumber that has sap if they are stacked together tight they will mold and or warp

Hi Diego ! Another cool video ! I'm from france, and my dad was milling with the same kind of alaskan mill that you have, but with a MS461 and I think his was faster (despite you having the bigger MS661). He told me about a certain way to sharpen the chain with a specific angle to rip lumber like you do (10° is better than 30° for conventionnal cut). He had an electric grinder with a stone to sharpen where he can change the angle. You might be looking about that to process your lumber faster and have a smaller workout for your chainsaw ! Continue the good work ! (sorry for the typo english is not my motherthong)

I would had that, with a good extension cord, you can use your skilsaw just fine with your generator ! I think that's even better, even if you have 2-5% loss in the cable, it would be better than the generator breathing sawdust !

Get a battery leaf blower to keep the saw and boards clean. Getting a 12 volt chainsaw grinder is well worth it .. Getting at leas two more ripping chains is a smart plan in case they hit something or get too dull to cut, faster to swap chains. You sure have taken to the milling bug :) Glad your enjoying a new hobby . Need to in the furture look into a logsol mill.
