After playing a lot of mmos, I still miss this game so much. Bugs aside, I loved the world, lore, thumper mechanic and how impressively unique the classes were. Finding a really awesome node and calling down a group S3 thumper was one of the most exciting moments in my mmo experience, shame you didn’t get to experience it in this clip. I hate that the Chinese company took over the game, disregard the hardworking devs, somehow locked endgame map, progression, thumper mech, milking the players before ultimately killing it.

its such a shame, the game was absolutely fantastic in the beta and the direction was exciting but after they started caving to pressures from a young audience they converted the game into a more traditional MMO and ruined it completely. It barely resembles the game that it started out as.

I was there... I was proud to be there. It's hard to put in words, though. But if I had to condense it to ONE thing, it's that they changed the 'core' mechanic of the game from being an open world game with only gear based progression (and even those were more 'sidegrades' than upgrades), to a pretty linear grindfest with EXP and levelups. Basically, they changed it from a wide open (and beautiful) sandbox, to a corridor theme park. A 180° turn if you ask me.

I played Firefall years ago and this doesn't even look like the same game. I was doing tons of resource harvesting when I played. Calling down harvesters was 90% of what me and my friends were doing.

I loved this game 2 years ago with my OP Bastion setup. Farming and crafting my first bike was an awesome feeling and the battles had 20-30 people with the invasions being a few hundred running around. Too bad to hear its not good these days.

The devs really fucked up the game. Almost every con you mentioned is tnx to 1.6. This "update"(more like downgrade) was on the test server for 9 months and despite all the feedback and bug reports it went to the live servers in this state. The game cant feel like a multiplayer game with just about 600 players(tnx 1.6) and new players quit fast because of all bugs. So what 1.6 did is: Kill the dead PvP - There were 30-40 players that used to pvp regularly(me included) but now you have to wait 70+h to find a pvp match Make the game's business model from the best f2p model out there to p2w - Before 1.6 you could buy glider pads, lgvs, mgvs(bigger lgv with 2 seats) and cosmetics and xp/reputation/resources boosts on top of that you could buy the premium currency by playing but now you can buy 1h stat boosts, buy keys for gear crates(otherwise you will have to grind for months just to open one) and get legendary gears which you cant get otherwise and on top of that they've maken all lgvs and gliders rentable without an option to buy them so you will have to rent them over and over again Fuck up the awesome mobility - on top of having jetpacks all classes felt fast and mobile in endgame because you had access to all the perks(passives) and gears which could make your class feel faster and more mobile(you could make fast even a tank) but no lets just nerf all speed bonus perks by half and replace the movement speed(which increases both walking and sprinting) from gears with sprint speed and make the combat feel slower and more boring Cut 2/3 of the content - There were 5 OW zones(1of them was PvP zone and 1 was a endgame zone with challanging content and daily missions), 6 campaing missions, 1 operation and 3 raids. Now there are about 8 campaing missions(only 2-3 of which are new), 3 operations(2 of which dont work), 2 OW zones(both lvling zones so from 3 zones for high lvl players we are down to 0) and 1 raid. And thats not everything but i'll just stop here because this will get too long

+Spunk Dog Much of what you wrote is lies. It is not more p2w than it was before. The grind for 1 key is like 1 hour, not a month. You don't even need Keys and gear crates for epic gear. Legendary gear do not require you in particular to open crates. I have multiple of these legendary items and i have never opened a single chest or paid a single penny. There are still a few permanent vehicles in the game. There are now stronger and additional movement abilities, than before. Your "slow" combat argument is...well. About the last part: Yes content and zones were cut for reworking purposes (they were needed after the class and combat reworks). 1.7 will bring back reworked Devils Tusk (1 zone) + 1 reworked raid+1new instance 1.8 will bring back the other zone (also reworked) and be the content patch (1.6 and 1.7 were never supposed to have much content, but were planned to be pushed out much faster than they are now).

+Spunk Dog I agree for the most part. Especially about the bugs. I don't know if it's just me, but the tinkering thing wasn't a downgrade when I went through that mission on both of my characters. It worked properly. At least to my understanding the damage boosts and stat boosts only apply to PVE. Unless you're having a 'who can kill fastest' competition I don't see how it's pay to win. They added the rentals and they periodical sell permanent bikes, though not often. I don't really agree with the system, but you can still purchase permanent vehicles and gliders. I just wanted to make sure people were aware. You can also get premium currency by playing just like you could before (currency exchange). You can earn keys for crates by doing bounties, which are mostly earned through regular game play. It's more so them giving you free keys. I'm upset about zones being removed too, but if they come back more lively, just like New Eden did, I'll be happy about it. Before the update they were extremely bland. Now they are less so, at least to me.

I played the game from closed beta to about February 2015. It had started going down hill well before I stopped playing. I had all the frames unlocked, and had 3 or 4 of them maxed out. I miss the game the way it used to be, but after some changes that happened, the game lost all the fun that it held for me. I did not enjoy playing it anymore. I did check into it every couple months to see if it got any better, but it never did. Sad to see it's gone, and I do hope something like it comes out again.

I used to play this game when it opened, VERY FUN AND COOL!!!, but with all the changes made including changes to the classes and the weapons, and all the bugs that have popped up, this game is done; the worst of the changes were to the Bastion class battleframe, I had mine set to PERFECTION, I was a one-man fortress. I had 6 small multi turrets able to be placed down quickly, then adding in 3 HEAVY turrets if I got enough time to place em. now my rig is all but destroyed

I played this during beta and it was impressive for a while. The concept isn't as generic as you think. The goal was to push back those forcefield areas and open up/free more of the Earth. In theory they could have covered the entire Earth, if the game was more successful. It really needs people. In the beta the game was so crowded that it often seemed like you were playing coop with strangers on the missions/objectives. I don't even know why I stopped playing. I had the same kind of fatigue like you. Strangely enough in the beta the game seemed less buggy than what you show.

18:15 :: there is an option to play all missions multiplayer. you have to be in a squad with some1, and the leader of the squad will grab the missions, and you can run them together. squads can have up to 5 members all doing the same job/story mission as long as the other people have made similiar progress to yours. max lvl is 45, but there are now ELITE RANKS to give extra bonuses per lvl you get, to the best of my knowledge, elite ranks are unlimited. 20:52 :: that is just a sound bug, happens way more often than it should for a game thats been out of alpha for years. youll find that the developers dont really care about fixing any bugs or things of the like. before 1.6 update, EVERYTHING was better. lvling was much more in depth, and challenging, and now it seems the focus of the devs was to get people to elite ranks as fast as possible. the story improved IMO with the update, but there are so many more bugs after the update i have almost stopped playing firefall all together (i have over 1000 hours into this game and have maxed out nearly every class) as far as the "pay to win" thing goes, i personally havent experienced much of this at all... granted, i buy my items and stuff on the marketplace alot, but you mostly just grind crystite (standard currency) from jobs and whatnot, then turn that crystite into credits (marketplace currency), and use those to buy good gear on the market place. never actually spent real money on this game so far. from what i know, you cant buy any combat related things in the red bean store (pay with actual money). everything there is mostly aesthetic related.

Firefalls best days where when during the beta there were 3 primary upgrade slots, generally decided by what class you were, they were Power, CPU, and Mass I believe. That design should of been final imo. You literally could upgrade your CPU which caused all the "cores" on your suit to glow brighter. I loved that.

if you had played till lvl 20 you could have chosen an advanced frame. the advanced frames are more fun than the base frames. (the raptor is the most fun sniper frame imo) the lvl cap is technically 40 but you can keep lvling beyond that for extra perks. the multiplayer aspect of the open world content is very random. you can join in on what others are doing without actually grouping and get credit for helping. the sound bug has pretty much been there since the game launched. no idea why they still havent fixed it. the dev team has limited resources afaik so they arent a big business like blizzard or anything. overall the game is fun imo even with its hiccups. this game has gone through very many drastic changes in its lifetime. when it was officially in beta there was very little to do but there tended to be far more action and the game was more open world based and balanced, and all the frames were far more fun than they are now. by the time it officially went live the devs made some bad design choices...kinda too many to get into here i think. but the most recent update changed the game almost entirely again. crafting got removed. one of the frames (arsenal) got removed, pvp was only recently added back in after being gone for about 2-ish years. "thumping" used to be far more prevalent (which you didnt actually do in this video). but since theyre revamping crafting atm theres little reason and little reward even if you do it.

I was curious how FireFall had progressed from when I played (and paid) the beta in 2012. It had gone through several major changes, including a major PVP push into the e-sports field (that failed at that time). The bugs (and not just the enemy NPCs) did deter much enthusiasm. I was a founder for this game, (got the cool hat, poster and bike) but when the game dropped it was completely different than what I had played in beta. They changed all Battle Frame abilities and even changed the Lore. I stopped playing just to try and forget what I had learned in Beta, now that I've seen this vid I might pop in for a look (it's been quite a while)!

5 year firefall vet here. Yeah 1.6 is a mixed bag and new players are getting fucked. You used to be able to switch frames at will between the 5 main classes. Now, getting another frame is quite an involved process that involves the RNG gods. You could also purchase permanent bikes and gliders. Now they're all rentals. Beloved abilities have dissapeared, gear also got destroyed in the 1.6 patch. 1.6 was the 5th time they re-did combat and progression! Endgame isn't here yet. Max level is currently 40, after which you gain "elite ranks" (players with purple names are elite ranks). Your world seemed empty because it's the starter area, it's a lot more populated in higher leveled zone. There's little for max gear'ed players to do, so a lot of vets are waiting for 1.7. The publisher sacked a lot of the dev team, so they're left with a skeleton crew to work on the 1.7 patch. Still, the game has a lot of merits and good moments. It's here, it's free, don't let us salty old vets get in your way! :o)

Anyways, the UI is buggy and it actually shows the base stats instead when you are tinkering, that's why it appeared like a downgrade. Everything in the game is multiplayer, you can invite people into a 5 person squad and do the instances together with friends.

Thanks for looking at Firefall! It's pretty fun at endgame, and it was definitely more interesting before endgame in earlier versions. I can happily elaborate on different version features or current ones. You lucked out and missed a few bugs, but also encountered some unfortunate new ones. Overall, you have been spared the host of bugs that appear over and over throughout the game's content, although you eventually become very good at fixing them, and many can be sorted out with /rui . Quick rundown on version history (since launch), the game launched with 1.0 which introduced a standard MMO leveling system [1-40] and expanded the third zone Devil's Tusk. Content built from 1.0 to 1.3 with the addition of Elemental Weapons and the Amazon Warzone, a mob-level 45 endgame zone with army-scale operations and massive takeback missions, plus dailies. From there, updates were halted and the 1.4-1.6 version were worked on internally and on the Public Test Servers to prepare for the China beta. 1.6 shelves Amazon Warfront and Devil's Tusk, and rebalances Coral Forest (zone 1) and Sertao (zone 2) for levels 1-40. ---As an aside, 1.7 and 1.8 will reintroduce Devil's Tusk and Amazon Warfront + Crafting respectively, and the former is close to deployment.--- 1.6 Added the core mission set you played in the video, and fleshed out the tutorial. Also, most of the voice acting you heard was likely in-office temporary voice acting, as the professional lines aren't properly implemented until later missions, though the lines have been read for the earlier ones. (I haven't played in a couple weeks, it may have been patched). 1.6 also introduced Elite Ranks, Tinkering and Legendary items, systems that are designed to be ultra-endgame currency and time sucks, but also offer significant boosts in power for players who are willing to spend the time. Keep in mind legendaries and tinkering are NOT required to be a high-performing player, though the latter helps. Elite Ranks on the other hand are post-levelcap 'levels' at 3.5M EXP each (it goes fast, rewards are huge) that award minor stat boosts every level, and a special reward every 10, of your choice from 6. Elite Ranks are vital to performance since there is no hard cap on them, and their bonuses stack quickly as you climb into the high double digits. Overall 1.6 is designed to have pseudocontent that will provide players with some form of progression as long as they are willing to play. I'm here to vomit more information on any topic on the game, just ask!

R5 misjudged their target, and also the players desire to game the ER system once they discovered how wide open it had been left. They have gotten so out of control and off target that they are top of the list for an extra special bash from the nerf bat. Enjoy them while you have them.

You create a squad and add a player, then you can do missions together, cant remember the number but once the squad is full, you create a platoon. Also you can play in first person (middle mouse button is what i use, not sure if that's default). before patch 1.6 you could play at speed and it felt damm close to how Quake 2 played imo.

I have not played many MMORPG's myself as I am primarily a console player but out of the few I've played, I wanted to recommend a quite unique game on PC you have not covered yet called Phatasy Star Online 2 or "PSO2". It's a Japanese MMO and is region locked so you will need VPN, an English patch etc (Google "arks layer") it's a really fun futuristic/sci-fi Action MMO with lots of customisation etc. Give it a go, you might like it. (I've been looking towards this) The game max level is 40. There are 4 open zones,each one with at least 15 watchtowers. The map you've seen is hardly 10% of the game itself. Game has an amazing exploring potential.With these gliders which are easily crafted/bought a permament one (NOT for real money) and vehiecles + jetpacks. You can group with people. There is a teammaker for a squad,but I reccomend playing with a friend. I dunno why you didn't shoq it,but you can switch to any class,and it's totally free.Each of starter's battleframes you've seen can be accessed at any moment.And they are only main kinds of actual battleframes. For example Assault class has two other bframes- Firecat and Tigerclaw. Firecat is a crazy pytocnic with medium armor and is better for close combat,Tigerclaw is more of a controll and speed type,but with high aoe+has the highest amount of fuel for jetpacks. Each starter's bframe has these "sub-kinds". And they all can be accesed free! (not insane crafting which is impossible to complete like in Warframe,you just need to lvl one bframe to max lvl and you can pick another one to play). Speaking of donations. This game can be played completely free without any problem. ANY battleframe is accessabable.Actualy, half of the store is craftable/found/won in lottery, and the other half is only comsteic. Colorful glider pads,faster vehicle,but nothing that affects your damage. The bugs are true,though. This game does have those issues. I love this game myself,and hightly reccomend it for playing/trying out.That exploring is just my thing,and plasma guns are amazing.

you start seen ppl when you hit the lv20+ areas near copa (well... not "near", you need to travel to get there) where mobs are actually a bit more difficult to beat... the campain quests are the main attractive to me on this game TBH, the sidequests are just to get a little bit of XP and ingame money to upgrade your battleframe and weapon, honestly the game its pretty decent once you hit the lv20+ areas (I got a lv27 dragonfly, lv15 Recon and a lv13 Assault, havent played on a long time but still got my characters :P). This video makes me a little bit want to comeback to the game, but IDK, as you said for solo players you can get a bit bored quickly, unless you find an invasion on any point of the map or tornados then you can see a bunch of ppl fighting mobs together and THAT is really fun to play ! you should play Perfect World Internation (if you havent already) I would love to see you playing that =)

There is no such thing as taking cover. The enemies have aim bots and it takes centuries to kill enemies even after 20 bullets to the head. btw I play as a sniper class

Pre-spiel: For those who want the old game back sign the petition that is being used as an interest gauge: www.change.org/p/crixa-labs-make-ember-a-spiritual-successor-to-firefall This was a really fun game with a lot of promise but unfortunately they started to move it in a different direction after the beta, they took it away from being roaming and discovery missions more towards job boards, the crafting got super simplified and they got rid of a lot of the dynamic stuff like chosen incursions on the SIN towers which, if lost, would cause the melding to collapse and cover areas of the map. 1.6 wasn't the downfall of Firefall, that had already been put in motion with he new game direction, but it was most peoples last hope for the game, I think most people realised it wasn't going to go back to how it was but were hopeful they would polish the new direction and add more content, turns out they removed more content than they added, there were just as many, if not more, bugs and it became a lot more grindy... I'll probably give it another crack when 1.8 comes out (if its still alive by then) because I spent a lot of time playing and had a lot of fun over the years but I cant see it making a comeback unless they scrap the new direction and put it back on its old course which, quite frankly, I doubt they can afford to do now. Its such a shame because they have some great devs that put a lot of TLC into the game but, depending who you ask, either Red5 management or The9 oversight pushed them in a more traditional MMO direction that they thought would be more lucrative but they didn't realise most people were playing it because it wasn't a traditional MMO.

Long time Firefall player here and everything said in this video is true. The game was fantastic before the 1.6 Update. The studio lost a lot of employees and it seems most we're programmers. Graphically the game is still awesome and easy on your PC; they have great world builders/designers.

You can do missions with other players. There are parts that are multiplayer only and squad systems that are for playing together

Well they changed almost everything in this game. Reset every mission I have. Give millions of free exps to veterans. A $50 worth of redbeans. Fuck with all of my items. Everything is messed up. But I still keep an positive view to the game. At least the devs haven't given up on the game. So newbies are still welcome. You haven't experienced hell. So you'll still have fun playing this game. Don't let those negative reviews turn you down.

Game was even better pre v1.0. v0.8 pretty much nailed what this game should have been to be successful but investors got cold feet and was worried it did not have a mass market appeal. Because the lead designer Mark Kern did not want to budge from his vision, he was eventually removed by the board of directors and put a puppet in charge that was willing to compromise the original vision of this game in order to go for a mass market appeal. The result is what you have before you now. Not to defend Mark Kern, from the rumors and news surrounding him, he sounded like a terrible person to work under. He tried to adopt the Valve mind set of working environment but he clearly did not understand how exactly Valve pulls it off with their stuff and the end result was everyone on the development team did not know what to do and what to focus on at any given time because there was no structure at all in the workplace and Mark Kern would lose his temper very often when things didn't meet his expectation but because he never set out any concrete expectations for staff to follow. Well you can see how that was a problem and why he needed to step down.

Used to be a blast as a sandbox shooter. The missions were annoying as you aren't sure if you could beat them. Usually could find one or 2 people coming in to do the missions but, your damage output could vary. It's the reason the leveling system was nice so you could do missions at your level in said area. That being said they also changed how you get Tier 2 Frames. Needing to max a frame to get Tier 2. Where as it used to be from maxing out certian power upgrades. Basically was 5 bars with 7 notches and you could get a token for every 3 notches or so. Needing 10 tokens for Tier 2.

Good video man, you should try Defiance tho. Still a mmotps, but combat sistem is alot better, mobs are better, a lot of random multiplayer global events, and it has its own tv series too. A lot better than Firefall, give it a try.

I played a shitload of this in the beta and a little after it was released. I stopped playing since it was very little content and not much else to do besides farming missions and doing thumping missions which was the only real challenge but quickly became repetitive. But it looks like they have added a lot of new things since then so i might go back and check it out.

Ahh, the good ol' days of FireFall. Started playing 1 to 2 years ago and loved it. Though it really is dying and probably mostly dead already, just look at the FireFall forums and subreddit. It was really smooth and fun and best to play with a friend or a few, playing alone just doesn't feel as good as with friends. I wouldn't bother to start playing this game anymore, though. Only if you have played it (a lot) in the past, it feels good to bring back some memories, but nothing more. I don't completely agree with people saying that 1.6 completely killed the game. It took away some good things, it put in some good things. IMO it was only after 1.7 that it became completely hopeless. Appearantly the original developer, Mark Kern, is working on a new, spiritual successor to FireFall, but it's in pretty much it's earliest state.

I played this game back in 2014 The changes sinse then have been abysmal, a complete overhaul and many of the battle-frames(classes) have been absolutely nerfed (IE, one of the classes had their main ability removed). The game play experience seems to be improved from what I can see, the missions used to be pretty lack luster. But I haven't played enough of the new version to know for sure. Either way, not sure I'll ever come back to firefall

I'd love to see you give Ansa a try. A friend and I came across it the other day and it's been touted as a Korean WoW. It's pretty decent if not a little bit generic, but the oriental theme makes it kinda neat in my opinion. The translations aren't complete though and because the western version seems a bit fresh there aren't too many players yet, but I'd love to see the shenanigans you could get into while trying it.
