I’m from Tirana , been to Durres many times, I hope Albania never joins EU ! We are much better the way we are right now , we need to protect our heritage and values from globalists!

@@alerts_royes we are poor but we are getting better by the day !! Selling out to globalists , it’s worse than being poor! Shows no character!! Albania, has water ( drinkable) , beaches, mountains, snowy places , hot places , amazing land to grow food ! We like to only import export with eu and freedom of movement, that all we need from eu !!

I honestly had the same thought recently. The moment Albania joins the EU, our heritage and land will be taken from us. It will be difficult but stay independent!

Agree totally !! And I feel sad for the rest of the balcans who joined euro and prices sky rocket now !!

Durres has a lot of potential still even tho it has been getting massacred urbanistically since communism fell. At the very least they need to completely renovate the old town which I'm surprised it hasn't happened already considering Korca, Vlora and Gjirokastras old towns have been beautifully restored. The second thing they could do is change some of the bland buildings and put some neo-renaissance style facades on them, expensive but worth it.

Nice video. The amphitheater had been abandoned for almost 450 years from 1502 and until the '60s no one knew its location and the whole place had turned into a hill full of houses. They are the last houses that are not being demolished for lack of funds, but for 10 years I believe 100 million euros will be found to restore it completely.

Interesting information. Thank you!

Very true. The amphitheatre had been buried for centuries after the two major earthquakes that hit Durres, and remained unearthed until 1966 !!! They freed over OR close to two thirds, which is quite impressive, but restoring it completely would be a challenge as they would have to tear down the main street, and reconfigure the downtown. That would be like demolishing a piece of history to make room for an older one's time travel. I totally agree with Maarten about the houses surrounding the amphitheater being an eyesore, but to the credit of their owners they were already there by the time the amphitheater resurfaced. Until 1990, when no one could build without State's permission - communism, be as it may, did know one thing or two about preservation - those buildings looked nothing like they look today. They used to be smaller sized, perfectly blending with the surroundings, therefore low key enough to let the eye rest over the amphitheater. I blame the post 1990's governments, who out of negligence and obtuse greediness, allowed construction along the amphitheater's perimeter. I feel very bad every time they show footage or pics of the amphitheater looking small and ill at ease tucked in between bellowing constructions. The only way to realize or - be reminded of - its greatness is through drone views, that show a strangely circular, fuller, and robust jewel of the antiquity living up to its name, as well as to our more recent collective memory. The houses on the hill will be taken care of, in one way or another, it is the highrises scattered along the waterside in all directions, where there used to be none, that take away from the attractiveness of the view.

16:15 it’s because it was only discovered in the 1960’s. There were houses built on top. And there’s probably lots of other archeological discoveries to be made since the city was completely submerged under water TWICE. Cool video bro

Lali, Adriatiku, Joni, Egjeu, Tirreni, Mar Ligure are all names for various sections of the Mediterranean. To be so "quick to judgement" because our friend, like most visitors from non-Mediterranean countries, uses the generic name instead of the brand 😁😁😁is like "Hey, this is not Albania. This is Tirana".

It's so shameful to have build so close to the ancient site of the amphitheater. Albanians need to learn to preserve their heritage. They lack so much empathy when it comes to historical sites and respecting property in general. Hopefully things will get better.

@@Maartentravels Political propaganda, it has been said for years. You saw it yourself how they keep it... I am born in Tirana, where all those new constructions without any criteria is dirty money in full laundry process between government and mafia. I hope things change, I have not lived there in a very very long time.
