This was filmed in the TV studio where I worked at the time. I didn't find out about it until the day after because it was kept pretty secret. The guys who worked the evening shift got to see the whole taping as it happened. I was so jealous.

Albert considered Stevie to be like a son to him. This is great because Stevie is playing Albert’s guitar licks back to him. You can hear that Albert was his biggest influence.

If you'll watch closely, you can see Stevie studying Albert's playing, and facial expressions. And I'm always amazed at how Albert had signals and had great communication with the other band members. He gives the bass player a look during one part of Stevie's playing. One thing to know about with blues music. It was different than any other genre of music. Black Artists we're sought after, and revered for their music. However, I agree with you there was open discrimination happening during Albert's life. And I believe that's what gave some of these artists the wisdom to be humble, living the life they lived. Great Reaction Chod.

Open discrimination is why Elvis got as big as he did but it’s also the reason a lot of white racists hated Elvis. He brought African American music that was being “canceled” or suppressed to white americans.

Stevie studied Albert's playing for years before this brilliant session. I loved Albert well before I had heard of Stevie. When I heard Stevie, I was blown away and also struck by how much his playing was influenced by Albert's. If I met whoever got these two together, I would shake his hand, give him a huge man hug and buy him drinks all night long. Ditto if it was a woman.

SRV ~ 🎸🐐 THE goat of all goats It's laughable to think that so many people believe Jimi was Stevie's #1 influence. All anyone has to do is watch this jam session and they'll quickly see that Albert was Stevie's main man. Stevie may have dressed like Jimi, and adopted his stage presence, but you can hear Albert in damn near every note Stevie played.

Albert Kings voice was like a pad of butter melting down a stack of pancakes...smooth as silk. Saw King and his grandson just before he died...LEGENDARY. After the concert he was sitting at the bar i was like 2 feet away from him, but i could not bring myself to talk to him....my regrets.

Jimi and Albert were SRV’s main influences. I was blessed to see Albert live at the Fillmore West in the 60’s! The great Black blues artists were not recognized here- so they went to England where the rock bands worshipped and studied them for years. Albert toured with all the big British groups because of that.

He played a big guitar, a triangular Gibson Flying V shaped like a rocket ship. He named it “Lucy” and played upside-down and left-handed without reversing the order of the strings. And he could play it loud, especially onstage, where his searing, overdriven lead lines streaked feedback like jet trails from a 747.

Stevie idolized Albert King. Back in the day I saw a concert at The Forum in Inglewood. Albert King, BB King and Freddie King. Buddy Miles played drums for all three.

Albert was a gruff no nonsense bull of a man. Albert was pestered into letting Stevie sit in when Stevie was just starting out. Albert thought Stevie would embarrass himself on stage, but he didn't. Stevie began playing Albert King licks that Albert had forgotten. He started grinning during the set and pretty soon, Stevie became "Little Stevie" to Albert (Albert was probably a good foot taller and 150 lbs heavier than Stevie). 10 years or so later, Albert's manager asked him if he wanted to film this show with this hot young guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Albert was like, "Who??" Eventually Albert realized they meant "Little Stevie" and agreed. Watching these two, you can see the love and respect they had for each other. Albert said that if he ever had a white son, Stevie would have been it. He didn't like many people but he loved Stevie. He was heartbroken when Stevie died and cried like a baby at Stevie's funeral. He died 2 years after Stevie passed.

@@surlechapeau It’s one of my favorites. I bought the vinyl at Antone’s records and I still play it often. I never got to see Johnny Copeland play, but I saw Robert Cray, and I saw Albert Collins play at Antone’s. He always had a long cord on his guitar so he could walk around, and he walked up to me, face to face, and played for a minute or so, which seemed an hour. That was special, because it seemed you knew him after that, like he was playing just for you. What a great showman, and what a great guitarist! He played with Stevie like an equal.

Met him after the show and got his autograph on a copy of his 'Ice Pickin' ' album. Saw Robert Cray at Pier 86 NYC Aug 25 1988.

This was late in Albert's life and he wasn't what he was in the 1960s or early 70s, but he still had some of that old magic. SRV's career had just started his big career ascent and Albert was his top influence, you can see it the more you study Albert King.

"Blues Before Sunrise" please off of the same performance. The whole performance is Epic & Albert talks a lot in parts, because he was so excited to play with Stevie. He remembered playing with Stevie at Antone's in Austin when Stevie was Young as Little Stevie.

Stevie idolized Albert and his playing - he was probably the biggest influence on Stevie's playing aside from the 2 Jimmie's - Jimmie Vaughan his older bro and lethal blues gutiar player, and Hendrix of course. And Albert and he have a history - one of the if not the most iconic moment of Stevie's come-up involved getting to jam with Albert at the local blues hot spot Antone's in Austin, Texas one night as a teenager. It was a transforming moment in Stevie's life and career - so for them to come back together all these years later makes this live session between them so special. They do a rendition of a song called "Blues at Sunrise" from the same concert and it is simply epic, but also so warm and easy to embrace. Stevie got his style of the big bend long notes from Albert directly. Albert is a lefty but instead of playing a re-fitted lefty guitar he just turned it over and so his high strings are where the low strings usually are - all backwards - but that is how he taught himself and it makes no difference it is all in the music (just a cool fact and something to look for when you watch him play). As always, Stevie takes his foot off the pedal around his elders and idols to make sure they shine. You have seen the god level skill SRV has, but you never see him dip into that God Mode when he is playing with his older influences; it is all about respect - that is just who SRV was. Not only that, a lot of otherwise semi-forgotten (by popular music at least) artists got a 2nd life because Stevie breathed life back into the blues in the 80's, and he made SURE to pay respect and bring as many of them and as much of that success and momentum back to his idols - he played a big role in getting interest going back into their music and it meant the world to them as artists and people and helped them financially too, as being a fire bluesman in the 60's didn't pay too many bills for a lot of these legends by the time the 80's rolled around. It is doubtful anyone did as much as Stevie to change that, unintentionally just by rejuvenating interest but also intentionally by always calling out where he got his inspiration. Check out the video of "Pipeline" live with Stevie and his brother Jimmie - it is one of the coolest things you will ever see.

You got it backwards. It was SRV you was privileged to play with Albert King. You really need to watch the whole show. SRV looked up to King and tried to emulate King’s style of blues. At the Time, King was the one being bothered by a young up comer. Look whose band was playing with them. It was Albert Kings guys back there. Thanks for the video, it’s one of my favorites.

Albert playing Albert and SRV playing Albert. You can hardly tell them apart when listening only. Albert is playing a guitar left handed with the high strings on top. It's tough to get that sound.

With 2 great guitar players it’s easy to not pay attention to the vocals, but Albert Kings voice is just on point! Stevie is very respectfully reserved with Albert. But, true story, I was at Albert Kings last show in Santa Ana CA in 92! Got to shake his hand, and found out he died a few days later. These are 2 of the greatest of all time

You really need to check out Albert King “I’ll Play The Blues For You”. It grooves and has a lot of soulfulness in the rhythm section which i really appreciate in a blues song. It seems like a lot of blues bands kept the rhythm section somewhat formulated or generic so would emphasis would stay on the lead guitar. I’ve seen some younger people react to blues songs and not really like the fact it was/is for the most part guitar centric.

I think Albert King is the best purely blues guitarist. SRV I consider more of a rock guitar player.

Well, you'd be wrong. Stevie Ray Vaughan could play Rock, Jazz, Texas Swing, Blues, you name it, he could play it. His main genre however, was Blues. Perhaps you should listen to more of his music and do more research on who he actually was, instead of what you think. He was solely responsible for keeping the Blues alive, during a time when Blues had been forgotten. He didn't get to play with all of the great Blues legends because he was a Rock musician. He got to play the Blues with them, because he was as good as they were. They didn't allow just any old "Rock guitarist " to play with them. They considered Stevie Ray Vaughan to be one of them. One of the great Blues players. I really can't believe you actually commented that, and I really can't believe anyone up voted it. I guess a lot of people don't know much about Stevie Ray. Smdh

I challenge you to do a comparison.
