The Speedy Sharp is a tool I've used for a few years. It's not for fine sharpening but it can put an edge back on an axe or blade very quickly. It also does a great job on all outdoor tools like gardening tools, brush axes and similar items.
I'm now an Amazon Influencer! Check out the Alberta Bushcrafter store at:
www.amazon.com/shop/albertabu...

As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases. There's even a specific category for Speedy Sharp and other sharpening products too!
And for those who were wondering, here's the info on my new background music (used with permission):

If you get the technique right, it'll put a hair popping edge on your knives. I found that the lightest pressure and minimal angle closest to the actual bevel works best, just be sure to strop when you're done.

Not to mention "use a vise" and not the flimsy stand. Good advice!

@@AlbertaBushcrafter Yup, He's got way too much pressure on the blade, and he didn't reverse the angle of the sharpener to hone the burr.

You're using it wrong, I've used mine for a while, and made any knife razor sharp. You need to use the speedy sharp at a lesser angle . Try using it at about a 7 or 8 degree angle and reverse the carbide bit to hone. Just my two cents, even used mine to sharpen a machete
@alwaysarmed88
@alwaysarmed88 5 жыл бұрын
I was seeing the same. Your supposed to hold it to a certain angle. Then you use 1-2 strokes on one side and the flip it to HONE it and it works like a dream

Ya read the box. I've even used it to redo new edges on two blades. Took it and ran it on the edge of the blade until I was past the big chips, then I used the package instructions (but more strokes) then honed as the package said (again a few more strokes) onto a small leather strop with green compound and ya, pretty damn good edge. Is it a stone sharpen? No, BUT deep in the woods for less then an ounce I can get a really good working edge back if need be..

As you know Ive packed these carbide files for years in my kits. They carve steel going forward and hone going backwards. I mostly use them as a hone to maintain an edge or fine tune one. They are also great for making fine tinder dust and such.

They do take off a lot of metal so I use other stones for my best blades.

Alberta Bushcrafter if you go the other direction they take little to no metal and work much like a steel or hone.

According to the manufacturer, you use the side opposite the carbide bit for honing. I'm going to check my stock of acrylic, though, as Simon's Discoveries and High Carbon Steel Love both gave me an idea. And if that idea doesn't pan out i canalways use the Japanese water stones or Lansky Deluxe kit with the extras.

Thanks! It also puts a quick k edge on garden tools. But yes, it's not for fine sharpening by any means. Normally if I use this on one of my Moras, I have to sharpen it finely later on.

You can use the sharpener facing the other direction to better hone the edge. Not gonna compare to a ceramic but it will work in the bush.

How much pressure should you use when you're sharpening something with it? Carbide takes off a lot of material if you push too hard but it does practically nothing when you don't push at all.
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 7 жыл бұрын
I put just enough pressure on the sharpener so I feel a little bit of resistance. The best way I can describe it is that the sharpener "bites" into the metal a bit, but doesn't "dig" deeply into it - and yes, a carbide sharpener will be VERY aggressive if you use too heavy a hand.. The first few times I used it, I wound up taking way too much material off the blade. This is why I normally use this sharpener for tools and knives that don't need a super-sharp edge - for example, my big Kershaw Camp 10 knife, my machete, and the bill hook (brush axe) I used in this video. I also use it on many of my edged garden tools too. For my better and finer knives I use the Lansky Deluxe system with a few extra add-ons.

Just received my two speedy sharp. Thought I'd try it out on an old fishing knife.. it put a like new razor edge on the knife in just a few passes. Ago I tried on my daily use pocket knife again with outstanding results and a razor edge. Then tried on a couple old kitchen knives and after 10 minutes still can't get an edge on them. I know my technique and angles are correct from the previous results however, I absolutely can not get an edge on the kitchen knives

I've found that on stainless steel knives it's tougher to get a good edge in general, but carbon steel is softer so it sharpens better but stains and dulls a bit more quickly. But that's mighty odd, as silicon carbide is harder than even the hardest steel so it should do the job. I'd suggest contacting Speedy Sharp directly and see what they have to say. I'd be interested in what they come up with.

I have been looking for one of those to use with my 1/2 inch by 6 inches ferro rod. None of the big box stores in this town seem to have them. I don't want to order online because shipping gooses the price up to more than I want to spend. I would never use one on a knife, a lawn mower blade, shears perhaps; but never a knife. Carbide sharpeners take off too much metal IMHO.

The only blades I've used it on were pocketknives and the ones in the video. With the Kershaw, it turns out that the blade was so bulky that my Worksharp actually rounded it off, so taking more off the edge helped it. And the Mora Flex knife was pretty badly dinged up so it needed a bit more work too. But you're right - on my better knives I use better sharpeners. More to come on that.

Your right .. there is a right way to use this sharpen. It is one of the best sharpeners out there . There is a proper way to use it.. sorry but this is not the way. I'm a professional cod fish filleter from Newfoundland. The blade thickness type of steel in the knife. To fillet a fish you need a razor sharp fillet knife . I use the old fashioned steel for my knives and fine toon them with a super fine oil stone. Saying that I started using the speedy sharp and with a bit of practice it keeps my fillet knife razor sharp and lasts longer than the traditional method. Practice makes perfect. You really need to know the knife involved different pressure will give you different outcomes. Over all a great thing to have arou

You think this would be a good way to sharpen a curved blade like a karambit blade?
@AlbertaBushcrafter
@AlbertaBushcrafter 7 жыл бұрын
It would definitely work, but the edge wouldn't be as fine as you's want. Blades like karambits are usually very sharp, and the Speedy Sharp, I've discovered, is more for touch-ups and putting an edge on tools which don't need a razor-sharp edge.

Check out the Lansky Deluxe Sharpening System. You can get additional curved or pointed stones that should work with curved blades. I use this system on all of my fine blades as it gets them scary sharp.

If they are edible, nothing at all. But even after a few judicious and careful pruning sessions, the tree in the video stopped flowering altogether. There is one single shoot coming out of the stump, so maybe I can train it into a productive tree again.
